Apple Rejects SoundPrism with CoreMIDI support

Anyone know what's up with this? What makes this different than other apps with CoreMIDI support?

Update: I heard back from Audanika. You can find full details with updates on http://audanika.tumblr.com/ (for the archives: you can find the initial post here).

In short, and as I understand it, Apple does not allow you to charge for feature updates based on built-in iOS capabilities. Core MIDI support falls into this category. The only options you have are to offer the update for free, raise the price of the app for new users, or create a new app with the feature. It's a no win situation for developers like Audanika. Giving the feature away for free results in no compensation for the work done, charging more for the app may not compensate for the work and may turn potential new users off - some new users may not want the feature. Creating a separate app for users to chose, results in current owners being left out. The best option which Audanika would like is to simply have the update be available as an in App purchase. No go due to Apples rules.

via Audanika:
"We tried to sell MIDI support as part of an InApp Purchase which apparently nobody before us has tried before. It got rejected because Apple told us we're only giving people access to capabilities of iOS throught hat purchase...

Of course we could raise the price but it would be a very bad solution because we'd be raising the price of our app because of a feature used by maybe 10% of our users. A lot less people would buy SoundPrism and I honestly doubt that this would offset the gains through the higher price."

"StepPolyArp is a Midi step polyphonic arpeggiator. The arpeggiator does not play any sound itself, it transmits Midi notes to a Mac or a PC to be used in combination with any sequencer, virtual instrument (VSTi, Audio Unit) or Midi synthesizer.

The arpeggiator can transform chords into sequences of notes played one after the other in several ways. A matrix polyphonic step modulate arpeggiated notes in time and pitch. The main controllers (velocity, modulation, panning, volume, aftertouch, and pitch bend) are also programmable through a step editor. The integrated keyboard automatically adapts to the selected musical scale.

Features:
• 32 steps programmable matrix
• 11 configurable transposition lines
• Features copy and paste
• 8 octaves virtual keyboard
• Receiving MIDI notes from external devices

Koushion Promotional Video

YouTube Uploaded by kudzucreative on Mar 8, 2011

"Koushion (literally "grid sound" in Japanese) is a new kind of MIDI controller for your iPad. While it looks deceptively similar to a simple Tone Matrix, this is no toy. This video demonstration was completely improvised. The app will be available in the App Store on March 22.

* Includes a 16-step sequencer with a two-octave range.
* Wirelessly controls MIDI software for both Mac and PC.
* Syncs to any external MIDI clock source available to your computer so that the performance or production always stays synced.
* Plays eight scenes/banks individually, chained in succession, or simultaneously.
* Adjustable quantization.
* Switches easily to any major or minor key with the push of a button.
* Assigns each scene/bank to any MIDI channel to enable control multiple instruments at the same time."
