Point Of View

Published on Nov 17, 2012 by attorks

"Here an idea that popped up last Tuesday evening. In the beginning you hear a 9-step sequence from row 1 of the Doepfer MAQ16/3 driving 1 voice of the Oberheim OB-Mx. After that a 6-step sequence from the Synthesizers.com Q960 driving the Synthesizers.com Modular is added. Two-toned chords are played on the Waldorf Q Keyboard producing a phaser sound. Then the solo from the Nord Lead 1 is added and after that Mellotron strings from the Roland XP-80. The frequency of the MiniMoog and Oberheim VCF's on the OB-MX are opened up a bit using a Behringer BCN44 MIDI controller. And after that a 12-step sequence from row 2 of the MAQ16/3 driving the Self-Built Modular is added. Anne used my iPhone 4 to film this video.

You can download/see/hear the video and music from my website soon.

PS: I sold the Korg PE-1000 (great retro sounds but you cannot sustain them because it is a percussive instrument by design) and the Nord Wave (great machine if you are into sampling and I am not)."

"This is the last model of ARP Sequencer produced - it is better built and more in demand than the earlier verion with the wooden sides. This analog sequencer was designed to be used with the ARP 2600 and Odyssey but will work with most other analog synths with CV and gate inputs. Instead of entering notes from a keyboard, this sequencer gives you knobs to tweak the pitch with your fingers - all you have to do is dial up the sequence you want, with no knowledge of notes necessary. Since this sequencer outputs voltages, as long as you have the right connections on your synth, you can use it to control a lot more than just pitch. Many old synths have CV inputs for volume and filter frequency, which can also be controlled from this sequencer. This is great for people who like to tweak until they come up with something interesting. It's a much more hands on and experimental approach to making music. This sequencer is the perfect tool for recreating that early electronic music vibe, is great for making new techno loops or experimental music. It's not just limited to these styles but is best suited to them. Its an excellent piece to interface with most modular synthesizers because it has patchpoints for all of its features. It's a truly flexible and unique tool that is very different from most digital sequencers people are familiar with. It's also different from most other analog sequencers because it has more patchpoints and therefore greater flexibility. This is why the ARP sequencer is the most sought after of the analog sequencers."
