WebSID - Commodore 64 synthesizer running inside Chrome browser

Published on Oct 31, 2014 Igor Zinken

"Demonstration of WebSID version 2.0 running in Google Chrome. WebSID is a official Chrome Experiment showcasing the WebAudio API and experimental WebMIDI API. Using these technologies, WebSID synthesizes audio live inside your browser, in other words : no samples were used.

As the name implies, this application aims to recreate the wonderfully phat lo-fi synthesis sounds of the Commodore 64.

Those with compatible MIDI hardware, can actually play WebSID using a MIDI keyboard (see the help section).

WebSID runs on desktop, tablets and phones running Google Chrome (or Safari). WebSID is also available for free as a Chrome app.

Play it in your browser here :

Modular Synth - Fun With Quantisers - Quantimator / Doepfer

Published on Oct 31, 2014

"Here's a patch that's heavily quantised using a Toppobrillo Quantimator and a Doepfer A-156 Dual Quantizer.

Some patch notes:

The Klee is running in 2x8 mode with output A having a re-settable random voltage applied to it via the Turing Machine.
CV outputs from A and B are going to the Doepfer A-156.

A CV output from the Turing Machine is going into the Quantimator, which is being clocked at x3 of the root tempo.

The Turing Machine is being clocked first at x1 then changing back and forth between x1 and x2.

CV outs from the Quantimator are feeding 2 x Doepfer A-110's and a Verbos Harmonic Oscillator, the CV outs from the Doepfer A-156 Dual Quantizer are feeding 2 x Doepfer A-110 oscillators, and one of them is multed to a Livewire AFG.

The only filtering is on one (AFG) part which is the slightly squelchy bass bit. The rest are just raw from the oscillators, apart from the one from the Verbos which is going through a Cyndustries Saw Animator to create a thick bassline type thing.

Here's the finished track which will be released on my next album....

Modular Synth - An All Doepfer Orchestral (ish) Patch

Published on Oct 31, 2014 isvisible

"Here's a patch I filmed about two years ago. Made with all Doepfer modules.

Some patch notes:
The A-143-4 Quad VCLFO/VCO is triggering the gate/envelopes of the A-143-2 Quad ADSR, clocking the random voltages from the A-149-1, providing cv for the two filters (A-106-1 Xtreme and A124 Wasp)
The A-143-4 is in turn being modulated by two LFO's, A-143-9 and A-146.

The two voices are then passed through a channel each of a Tapco 4400 Dual Spring Reverb.

SN 26757 & 36757

"This is a weird one. It may be a classic synth but when it arrived here it just looked and felt a bit tired and old. The cases look their age (with a couple of replacement catches and the tolex far from immaculate). Inside, the main panel is actually lovely, and in excellent condition, and the keyboard too is very nice. But a few of the sliders were a bit slow to become un-noisy (eg left speaker fader and VCF to VCA slider) and the keyboard is a little clacky. Some sliders, too, are more resistant to movement than others (eg the fune tune sliders.) Plus it had a collection of a few patchleads which honestly look like they are older than the machine itself. But then ..... as I started playing it, it became more and more desirable. You buy an old machine like this (40 years!!) for its character not its modern attributes ... and suddenly the sounds that started coming out of it hooked me. Through the internal speakers, and through external amplification, it sounds wonderful. Everything works properly (given some time for the oscillators to stabilise and a bit of wiggling of any noisy slider) and honestly it sounds so much better than any modern thing. Give it a collection of decent patch leads and it will give you a lot of pleasure back for years to come. Packing 20GBP."

Roland System 100M Modular with 10 Modules & Keys

"Small modulars don't get much more beautifully made and high quality than the System 100M, and this is a great example, with two 191J cabinets, a 181 keyboard, and ten good modules. Cabinet 1: 182 Sequencer s/n 870249, 112 Dual VCO s/n 213018, 150 Ring Mod / Noise / S&H / LFO s/n 770552, 165 rare double portamento controller s/n 270173, 140 Dual Envelope s/n 911109. Cabinet 2: 112 Dual VCO s/n 800443, 150 Ring Mod / Noise / S&H / LFO s/n 800844, 121 Dual VCF s/n 780329, 130 Dual VCA s/n 780305, 140 Dual Envelope s/n 780621. We played this for a couple of hours and didn't find anything less than 100% working, so although of course there are more possibilities than one can check in two hours we are confident you will find it totally satisfying. Cosmetically it has some oxidation showing through the paint on the bottom panel of one of the 191-Js, and the bender lever has been broken and re-fixed on the keyboard. Apart from those faults, this would be near-mint. It comes with the keyboard and module multi-pin leads, and 31 patch leads of varying lengths including 7 top-quality Phonoflex cables which could be reserved for crucial audio patches. UK voltage. Packing 14GBP."
