Emerson Soundpack (Week 7)

"Let me preface, this week's soundpack is not for everyone, actually it wasn't even made for you...let me explain. If you follow me on Instagram (@KyleMohr) you will quickly notice 2 things, that I have a mild obsession with Midi Fighters and that I have a 7 month old daughter, Emerson (Emmy). When we started the free weekly soundpack series I quickly came up with the idea to make one for Emerson by sampling the sounds of all her toys and even her talking, throwing the audio into Ableton, and chopping it up into a soundpack. This was so that her efforts to learn the Midi Fighter would be more engaging. So, I decided that for this week I would share Emerson's soundpack with you, for those with kids, just young at heart, or looking to put something different into your productions. Enjoy! -Kyle

Eurorack Modular: Phase Modulation and Minor Arpeggios

"First play with my 'other' modular, featuring in particular:

WMD's Phase Displacement Oscillator. Only one phase modulated oscillator is playing here. Very nicely gritty, despite just scratching the surface of the module.

SSL Modulation Orgy, just used as clock and VCA modulation.

4MS Pingable Envelope Generator, synchronised on the clock. The left and right envelope respectively drive the pitch and the phase modulation of the oscillator.

Doepfer A-156 quantizer, which quantises the pitch of the oscillator to a minor chord

Analog Solutions EKG, drives the root of the chord 'played' by the quantizer."

Beats on Analogue Solutions' Vostok Deluxe

"Playing with a basic beat on my Vostok.

The core of it is a simple white noise going through both filters, HP & LP, whose cutoffs are modulated by the step sequencer. EQ1 is the main envelope, which modulates the HP cutoff and VCA. EQ2 is a secondary envelope, which modulates the LP cutoff for a bit of extra bite, and which I'm bringing in and taking out midway. I am using LFO1 as a triangle VCO to add body on the low beats (and to bring the square wave into the mix at the end). The rest is 'just' playing with VCF2's screeeeaaaaaming resonance, at low level and then mid level.

Ears protection note: I played this patch through a strong compression (dbx 1066) because the level of the resonance is lethal otherwise. The main noise+triangle wave is significantly thinned down by the action of both HP and LP, so the resonance just screams a few order of magnitudes above the level of the main beat.

"Running through some of the filter effects on the Alesis Akira rack FX unit. The Akira is a no-nonsense all-in-one version of Alesis's ModFX units, some very interesting and unique sounds and algorithms here.

Filters were as follows:

30 - Band Limit
31 - LP BP HP
32 - LFO LP
33 - Autowah
34 - Formants
35 - Sampled BPF
36 - Resonator
37 - Vocoder Bend

Had a little too much fun with the Vocoder Bend (warning: loud) that I didn't get to the other Vocoder effect, but you get the idea. There are some slight video/audio syncing issues but that's OK because this is my first video."
