GOLT! Unobtainium (Furthrrrr Generator, Jomox XBASE, Modular Synthesizer)

Published on Feb 9, 2015 GOLT Modular

"Modular Synthesizer jam with live vocals. Based around the Endrophines Furthrrrr Generator and Jomox XBASE 888.

This is the first time I recorded vocals while improvising live, which was more difficult than I thought. Especially because I can't record on separate channels which would allow me to post process them. I actually record everything to a single mono track in logic. My mixer is also to far away to reach so I can't even change the levels while I'm playing. This meant the microphone was on the whole time, so you can here my chair squeaking and button pushing in the background.

This is patch was also about me getting to know the Furthrrrr Generator, which is based on the Bulcha 259. There are quite a few modules like this now, including the Make Noise DPO and the Sputnik Dual Oscillator.

I only used the Carrier Oscillator in this patch, I bypassed the Modulator and used the 4MS PEG (Pingable Envelope Generator) instead.

Most of the sounds were based around the three wave shapers, but I also used the uLFO shaped sine to the FM input of the Furthrrrr Carrier. To change the pitch of the Carrier I used the Hard Sync input driven by the Analogue Systems RS95E (best single oscillator ever made).

There was no filter used with the oscillator at all. All the timbre changes were produced by the wave shapers. The only filter used in this track was on the drums (the VCF303) but I forgot to actually use it until the very end.

The track is called Unobtainium by GOLT!

Thanks for watching!"

"The 4 Voice was introduced in the mid 70s and was one of the first polyphonic synthesizers available. Each of the 4 Synthesizer Expander Modules ( SEMs ) can be assigned to a different note. Splitting voices between modules is also possible, as is monophonic unison mode. In unison mode, it allows EIGHT oscillators per key. A single voice will give you 2 oscillators, 2 envelopes (1 for filter, 1 for volume), an LFO, pulse width modulation and a multimode filter with sweepable mode. The programmer module allows fast saving and recall of programmed sounds.

This particular unit seems to have a factory modification where the programmer section has two 4-stage envelope generators. In a standard 4 Voice, the programmer section has two 3-stage envelope generators as well as a single LFO with rate and depth controls. But in this unit the LFO control pots were set up to control the extra envelope stages (the LFO resistors weren't even installed, hence why this is likely a factory mod). It's actually a very useful mod because the 3-stage envelopes on the SEMs aren't as capable as proper ADSRs. So there is no global LFO, but the unit has the added benefit of having true ADSR envelopes and each individual SEM does still have an LFO of its own."
