3 Modules #28: Maths, Clouds, Ripples

Published on Oct 23, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"Turn off the lights and get ready for some sedate dark ambient tones! I love this slow, pulsating movement, and the warm, heavy thud of Ripples' sine sub. I also like the effect of modulating Clouds' dry/wet blend here: it serves a dual purpose as a VCA for the bass notes and a sort of side-chain compression for the granular sounds.

Note: this recording contains a very wide range of frequencies, from very low bass to piercingly high treble. I recommend using good headphones or full-range speakers to hear it all.

Patch notes:
I'm using Ripples as an oscillator (with some occasional self-FM for richer harmonics) and feeding little snippets of sound into Clouds' buffer, which stays frozen most of the time here. I then tune Ripples to a nice bass frequency and leave the rest up to the modulation that's controlling Clouds.

Maths channel 4 (slow, looping envelope) is controlling Clouds' position, density and blend, which is the dry/wet mix in this case. This is set up so that the wet mix will quickly drop, letting Ripples' bass tone through, and then slowly drift back up to 100% wet while the density gets sparser (moving from counter clockwise towards noon setting) and the position moves forward through the frozen buffer.

Maths channel 1 (quicker looping envelope) is modulating Clouds' texture and size parameter, to create some interesting movements and sonic artefacts.

Occasionally I'll manually change Clouds' pitch setting for variation. I also load different buffers throughout the recording – both by unfreezing and recording new sound from Ripples, and by loading stored buffers from Clouds' memory. Actually, one of those recorded buffers contained something I'd stored forever ago, and I have a feeling it's sampled from Rings, but it sounded so pleasant I couldn't resist using it anyway. The other buffers contain only sounds from Ripples, that I recorded while setting up the patch.

Thanks for watching!"

VCV Rack Open-source virtual Eurorack DAW - MVM #92

Published on Oct 23, 2017 Midiverse - TV

"What's up everyone? Welcome to Midiverse - TV. Today we're going to be checking out a new open source virtual Eurorack DAW called VCV Rack.

In the first audio example we have three different synthesizer voices, each on an independent MIDI channel. All the synth sounds are coming from VCV Rack, and the drum samples are coming from the MPC1000.

On the second half of the video, we'll experiment with several sequencers all sync'd up together. In this example all the audio is coming from VCV Rack.

::vtol:: ivy - 240 Step Sequencer

The latest creation from ::vtol::.

"Interactive sound installation. Sequencer-synthesizer with 240 steps, that allows to create rhythmic compositions. Object has complex control system with possibility to add or delete "voices", change tempo of whole sequence or individually for each voice, to change number and direction of steps.

The project is created specially for Open Codes exhibition in ZKM center, dedicated to codes and programming in art. On one side, Ivy is a representation of an archaic method of electronic music programming for analog synthesizers. On the other side - gigantic scale and obsessive multiplication of simple primitive elements turns this project into an art installation, that is referring to the topic of graphic and physical organization of parameters in electronic music.

Synth Jam with Moog Sub 37, Moog Mother 32, Juno-106 and Native Instruments Una Corda

Published on Oct 21, 2017 DJ FOTN

"After spending the day getting my new studio kit setup I decided to record an idea I was playing with. Featuring the Moog Sub 37, Moog Mother 32, Juno-106 and Native Instruments Una Corda and more than a little inspired by the Stranger Things sound track :)

Managed to get some really crunchy sounds out of the Mother 32 by feeding the VCO Pulse and the LFO Triangle back into the Ext Audio, then tuning the LFO and varying the VCO Mod Amount."

"This rather long video is an unedited session of soldering the SMD caps on the Deckard's Dream Voice Card.
Long and unedited are key words here. It's basically a real-time video of me soldering all the SMD capacitors on one Deckard's Dream Voice Card. I don't expect anyone to see this. That's ok."
