New Prototype Optigan/Orchestron Disc Player - Sound Demo

Published on Nov 14, 2017 optigandotcom

"Robert Becker has been making steady progress (in his spare time) on his new Optigan/Orchestron disc player, which we hope will be put into production at some point. There's still lots of work to be done, bugs to iron out, things to be fine-tuned, code to be optimized, etc, but it's currently playable (via MIDI), and the basic sound quality is quite good, so we figured we'd post a few informal/noodly sound clips of it in action. These are direct/unprocessed recordings from the unit, some featuring the onboard reverb. Sorry, no live video of it being played at this time. We don't cover ALL the features/functions in these sound demos, as some of them aren't quite working yet, but you can get an idea from looking at the photos what sort of things it will be able to do. Also, currently we cannot field any requests for pricing/availability, so please don't ask! We know alot of you will be interested in obtaining of one these, but at this time we simply can't give any estimates on that front."

Like an optical record player! Which, essentially the Optigan was/is.

Rakit Drum Synth

Published on May 11, 2017 Rakit

"Rakit Drum Synth Kit based on the Amdek PCK-100 & Boss PC-2.

A DIY drum synth that is made almost entirely from PCBs and has only 2 wires making for a tidy build. Nicely interfaces with sequencers and other trigger/CV sources."

via www.rakits.co.uk:

"Available as a kit or a fully made unit, the Rakit Drum Synth is based on the (now rare) Boss PC-2/AMDEK PCK-100 percussion synthesizer. The sounds produced by the synth are not limited to what you would expect to associate with drum sounds and can vary from big bass drums to tapping on glass to UFO space drum-wobbly things! Not only does this Drum Synth do sonic justice to the original but we have also put our own spin on it with extra modifications including:

* Attack on/off
* VCO & LFO wave shape selection
* Pitch CV input

Rakit Disintigrated Cracklebox

Published on Nov 2, 2017 Rakit

"A fun little noisemaker kit based on the famous cracklebox synth."

via Rakit

"Our disintegrated cracklebox kit is inspired by Michel Waisvisz’s Cracklebox and his use (and abuse) of one of the earliest examples of an integrated operational amplifier. The original used the LM709, an old (and obsolete) chip by today’s standards. So in our kit we have effectively taken the integrated circuit of the operational amplifier and dis-integrated it, allowing it to live on forever in kit form.

What Is A Cracklebox?

The disintegrated cracklebox is a noise maker type instrument where the player becomes part of the circuit by interacting with the touchpads. Experimentation really is key to getting the most out of it, using fingers spread over multiple touchpads to get new, interesting sounds."

Folktek Resonant Garden

Published on Oct 29, 2017 Sir Folktek

"The Folktek Resonant Garden is an acoustic-electronic hybrid instrument. See/read more on Folktek.com
In these first videos, the cv functions are never used and there is no external processing. Videos to come will cover the use of cv as well."

via Folktek

"The Resonant Garden is an acoustic-electronic hybrid designed to create anything from beats and oddities to dense sound scapes. From its inception in 2006, the original garden has gone through many changes and refinements; micro garden, luminist garden and illuminist garden and finally this latest and likely final version.

The garden essentially utilizes three Alter circuits but each equipped with a mic pre-amp, and 4 garden (stringed) panels for generating acoustics. By plucking, rubbing, tapping or even bowing, those micro-acoustic sounds become amplified and effected by the Alter in any number of ways. In essence, the garden is a large microphone designed to pick up vibrations."

EFFECTS
There are two Alter 1 designs and 1 Alter 2. Each Alter 1 has seven different DSP effects which is selected by touching the copper hexagon:

1; long delay (capable of near infinite feedback looping)

2; tight, notated granular delay

3; huge plate reverb

4; shimmering reverb

5; distortion and multi-filter

6; pitch delay

7; stutter glitch

Alter 2 has the following effects:

1; analog delay

2; reverb with infinite capture and lp + hp filters

3; choral reverb

4; palindrome reverse delay - backward/forward repeat

5; time stretch

6; pitch shift (notated semi-tones

7; time stretch glitch

CONTROL
On each of the Alter sections, the following is present:

- control for the gain of the mic pre-amp or any incoming audio.

- controls for mix, X, Y and filter as well as clock.

- all effects have a variation of a filter which may change effect to effect.

- X and Y control various rates.

- clock control adjusts the rate which controls the DSP which can drastically change the effect. In doing so it does slightly lower the quality of the output signal but the results are fantastic. This clock is not for synchronization.

- mix, X, Y and filter all have CV control inputs.

- Each control level or cv input is visualized on the control panel.

ACOUSTICS
Each garden panel is equipped with a contact mic. A contact mic is designed to pick up vibration. The mic pre-amp is specifically designed to deal with the frequencies of the contact mic by boosting certain frequencies and dulling others in order to optimize the sound quality. The mic pre-amp has a gain control so the level can be adjusted according to how you intend to play.

Rhino - FM Synthesizer using Arduino and Max Msp

Published on Oct 18, 2017

Googlish:

"This project was done within the framework of the Electronic Music Instruments course of the Department of Music Engineering of Technology and Acoustics.

It is a synthesizer based on the idea of Theremin in how to interact with the user, while in terms of its sound coloring it is based on the Frequency Modulation Synthesis technique.

The user, by moving the hand, controls a sequence of notes as a progression of a music scale he chooses. While at the same time it can regulate the spectral content by manipulating the potentiometers. The sound effect it generates is based on the reasons for its harmonicity and the effect it will choose to accompany the basic sound generator. The purpose is to give the user the freedom to shape the instrument's complexion with a variety of combinations by experimenting with the controller.

For construction I used an Arduino Mega 2560, and the Ultrasonic Sensor HC-SR04 motion sensor.

The sound generator was programmed into Max Msp's environment. "

"so this is my first attempt at a circuit based synth. it makes some horrible noises. that's why it's called 'do capacitors dream of electric death?', it sounds like electricity trying to die.
i don't know if it's really useful (the intro tune was a quick little something i made up in Sunvox with noises only from the synth.) But i'm quite happy with it's overall aesthetic and well, since it's my first attempt at anything like this i'm just glad it worked and ended up making noises :P

"Wired Heart features six sensors that can detect touch and humidity. Each of the sensors control the pitch of an oscillator – press harder or have sweaty hands to get a higher pitch. Each sensor serves a different function, and it is best to explore the Wired Heart Sound universe by trial and error. However if you want to know what is happening, you can find some explanation below.

INTERMODULATION
If this still sounds boring to you, wait what happens when you touch several pads at once. The oscillators will begin to further cross modulate each other by the current flowing through your hands and a whole new world of awesome sounds opens up.

EXPERIMENT!
There are many more ways the heart can react to you: Try wiping it with a wet cloth, put a banana on it and see what happens, or simply blow on it – the humidity in your breath will make the oscillators sing as if you were just breathing new life into six punch-drunk sirens.

Landscape - Stereo Field

1:40 - Basics
3:25 - As a controller
4:14 - As an instrument

via Landscape:

"STEREO FIELD is one instrument with three uses. It is simultaneously a stereo/quad modular touch plate synthesizer, a stereo/quad audio processor and a pressure sensitive chaotic CV controller. All three uses are available separately as well as simultaneously and in conversation with each other. The Stereo Field allows its user to manipulate and patch two analog stereo circuits via touch plates. By utilizing skin conductivity as new paths for current to follow you are creating new circuits and new sounds in relation to where your fingers are patching. The individual touch plates are directly connected to nearly every connection point of every component in its circuitry (located directly under each corresponding touch plate). When touched with multiple fingers it will create atonal analog synthesized audio with either of the two mirrored circuits represented by interlocking touch-plate circles. These parallel mirrored circuits can be finger patched separately or together yielding vastly different results in regards to texture, timbre and stereo imaging. This instrument has the ability to create atonal synth tones in stereo (and quad) as well as process incoming stereo audio (and quad) sources via 1/4" and 3.5mm ins and outs. Incoming audio sources can be "patched" or rewoven into any area of either or both of the circuits via skin contact. The two stereo input volume knobs (center) shape and effect distortion, drive amounts, internal feedback pitch, and modulation rates depending on how your fingers are patching. The quad inputs and outputs via the 3.5mm jacks have small touch plates leading to and from allowing for touch access of each of the 4 inputs and 4 outputs. If multiple audio signals are traveling into the Stereo Field these audio sources can be intermingled and can modulate one another, again depending upon where your fingers are patching. Sending CV signals into the 3.5mm input jacks will open up many more possibilities both in terms of synthesized sounds and audio processing. The Stereo Field can also be used as a controlled chaos source when using the 3.5mm outputs to send CV to your modular system. Due to the nature of feedback and finger patching the 4 available CV signals have the ability to get incredibly complex and textured in nature (see audio examples below in use with a euro-rack system). Because of the open nature of Stereo Field it can both send and receive CV modulation simultaneously. In addition, this can all be happening while your finger patching is changing and altering the incoming and outgoing CV while also processing incoming audio. These ins and outs can also be patched together with cables for sustained tones with the pitch/rhythm/volume/"cutoff" being affected by adjusting the incoming and outgoing volume knobs in various settings. Inter-patching in this way will also allow for sustained pulse beats and filter-esk sound shaping in addition to bringing new results to finger patching via the touch plates. Most importantly, processed audio and synthesized audio are available simultaneously with the ability to influence and modulate each other. This will often blur the lines between the two; who is manipulating who? who comes out on top as audio and who is modulation? This can be a constantly evolving cycle based upon where the performers fingers are placed and highly sensitive skin contact pressure changes.
