Amateur Chemist Turns Seven Today - Last Shot with Andrew Youssef

Today marks the seven year anniversary of Amateur Chemist. Those of you that have been coming to MATRIXSYNTH for a while might recognize the name. Amateur Chemist's pics, including NAMM coverage, have been featured here on MATRIXSYNTH numerous times dating all the way back to 2007.

Amateur Chemist is is Andrew Youssef, a professional, and I must say exceptional, photographer, mainly of bands during live concerts. His photographs are a mainstay in the Music section of the OC Weekly. You can see his most recent pics of Depeche Mode at the Staples Center here.

Normally I do not post on other site's anniversaries, but Amateur Chemist holds a special place in both MATRIXSYNTH-land and in my heart. Andrew brings me back to the early days of the site.  He reached out to me early on, and through the years we have kept in contact, albeit sporadically.  Sometimes we've gone nearly a year before touching base, but when we do it feels like just yesterday.  He's one of those people that makes you feel at home - safe.   I finally met Andrew in person at NAMM 2011 at the TRASH_AUDIO BBQ.

Not only is Andrew a great photographer, and all around great human being, he also has a level of strength I can only aspire to.  He is currently battling cancer.  He writes a column for the OC Weekly titled Last Shot, that focuses on his struggle with cancer while still getting out there and taking shots, both literally photographing concerts, and figuratively not letting cancer and the effect of his meds get in the way. The Last Shot column is inspiring and I highly recommend checking it out.

On his Twitter account @Amateurchemist today he posted: "Seven years ago today, I started a concert review/photography blog called Amateur Chemist. It changed my life."

It has not only changed his life, but the lives of so many others including myself.  Thank you Andrew! Happy Anniversary, and keep up the good fight.

Sunny Day Sets Fire

via Amateur Chemist where you will find the full review and more images. I've been looking for a reason to put up a Sunny Day Sets Fire post for a while now. They are a really great band. My favorite track from them is Teenagers Talking which apparently has not been released as a single yet. It is on the new album though. Below are two videos for their first singles.

"Onyee (Vocals/Synthesizers) was switching between her Nord Electro and Roland SH-201 and occasional sprinkles of xylophone. 'Stranger' accelerated the pace and knocked me over with a hypnotic guitar solo and soaring vocal harmonies."

The Presets Interview with Kim Moyes

read the full interview on Amateur Chemist.

"AC: I have seen you five times in concert and love the fact that you have two Korg MS-20's on stage. What drove this decision to use vintage gear while on tour?

KM: It's been a nerdy passion of ours for quite sometime now and apart from the great sound these synths make they have such a distinctive look about them. We are very familiar with these synths and can get around them quickly so it's just the easiest option for us to use them live."

Iron Maiden Synth Bass

another shot via John.
"screen-shot from an Iron Maiden DVD, where Steve
Harris, the bassist of the band can be viewed with the Roland GR77B bass synth (it's essentially an JX8P synth) and the accompanied PG800 programmer. Well, that's how the story goes:
Iron Maiden used the Roland guitar/bass synths for their 1986 album 'Somewhere In Time'. Also, Adrian Smith, gitarist of the band used the Roland GR700 on stage with a modified Jackson guitar as the controller.
At the time, many people where suspicious of this move, as they were afraid that the band was "watering down" but in the album, the synths were used for background "washes", and many silky and soft pads were used, as an added colour to the twin-guitar sound of the band. For the subsequent tours, roadie of the band Michael Kenny, handled the keyboard duties (off-stage!) and also, being himself a keyboard freak, he was present at Martin Newcomb's "Synthesizer Technology" museum opening, at 1994! "

On a side note: Iron Maiden recently played at the Lost Angeles Forum. You can find an excellent review of the show on Amateur Chemist.
