In 2009 I recreated many favorite 80s drumbeats on the then new Korg Electribe samplers, sampling the Linndrum, Oberheim DMX, Roland CR78, TR808 and more. I copied the patterns by ear and also tried to catch the vibe of each original track as much as possible, using only the internal EQ and sampler fx. Later I expanded the series to synthesizer medleys and full tracks. It led me to a lot of contacts, collaborations and releases.

Now I wanted to reboot this in portable music production. Jim Audo's GR16 iPad app felt very much like the Electribe SX in use. So I started transferring my old beats to the newer medium, improved and expanded them to do another series of classic drumbeats, to inspire new music.

The Novation Launchpad Pro Mk3 integrates well with it and gives more tactile feel to it, as with the Electribes. It's however not necessary to use it.

The result is a great sounding retro beat machine that now even fits on an iPhone.

And yes, that's an LM2 at the back, not LM1.

Enjoy

Moog Realistic MG-1 (1981) vs Cherry Audio MG-1 VST (2020)

harlemnightsmusic

"Comparing Cherry Audio's Surrealistic MG-1 Plus digital plugin to a vintage Realistic Moog MG1. One of the best analog emulating plugins that I have heard. Sounds were matched on the VST to the originals first by sight, then by ear as closely as possible."

Korg Minilogue analog sounds by Harlem Nights

Published on May 20, 2016 harlemnightsmusic

"Just got this very nice synth! Some additional stereo delay from my Roland SRE-555, and some master compression.

Some little ideas based on classic 80s tracks of My Mine, Gary Numan, Patrick Cowley and Bobby O. The last melody is the intro of a very old track of me called "Pet Symphony", I composed that on a Casio SK1 sampler.

Affectionately, I think the Minilogue often sounds like a sometimes noisy 80s radio cassette tape recording of a vintage analog synth. Its ease of use and portability may make you sound even better."

Sequential P600 + Gligli upgrade - Harlem Nights

Published on Dec 28, 2014 harlemnightsmusic

"Had this synth for some time while my Prophet 5 got some modifications. These are some personal sounds I made from this 80s synth, with new firmware, more info here: gligli.github.io/p600fw/.

Some delay and compression used. The upgrade gives better envelopes, LFOs and many other things. It does not get as warm as the Prophet 5 rev 2 but then nothing really compares

Back soon with more
