Bristronica 24: Big T Music's Mutable Open Source Modules

video upload by sonicstate

"At Machina Bristronica 2024, we caught up with Gaz from Big T Music - The range includes one-to-one replications of Mutable Instruments' designs, like Veils and Stages, and also unique adaptations such as the Beehive, a compact version of Plaits. Gaz noted that some designs include expanded features with different firmware, enhancing the default functionalities while maintaining a distinct aesthetic.

Their interpretation of Monsoon brings hidden functions to the forefront, thanks to collaborative efforts, including input from designer Jonathan Barnbrook."

All parts here. Also see the Machina Bristronica below for additional coverage.

A Synthesizer Played by Glacier Melting Waters - M E L T by Ghost In The Loop

video upload by Ghost In The Loop

"The full recording session for M E L T, from my new EP C R Y O S P H E R E, is finally here.

This track holds a special place for me because everything about it was completely unplanned. I initially set out to demonstrate my recording techniques inside a glacier, but what was supposed to be a one-minute demo kept growing, first to two minutes, then four.
As I continued, the recording evolved into what felt like a symphony of ice, with the raw, cinematic power of the glacier resonating through the sound. It’s moments like these that show the beauty of the unexpected in extreme recording environments.

For those curious about the technical side, I used an Interharmonics geophone and an Organic Audio hydrophone, connected to my Empress Effects Zoia, which acted as a pre-amp and envelope follower. The audio signal was split using Big T Music LTD’s Mansoon module as a resonator. I manually adjusted the pitch of the chords in real time, creating a progression based on what I was hearing. This added a layer of challenge to the live one-take recording process—if you watch closely, you’ll catch the moments where everything falls perfectly into place!

For this EP, I’ve partnered with EarthPercent and will be donating 50% of all sales profits to support environmental causes. I’m honored to collaborate with them and make my music part of a greater mission.

You can stream the full EP on your favorite platforms, or support further by purchasing it on Bandcamp (links below).

Morphagene // Mega Modularis' First Reel

video upload by Mega Modularis

"OK! Here we go, this is my first try with the Morphagene, I was very excited to finally receive this module, which has been on my wish list for quite a while, so look out for plenty of Morphagene exploration coming soon. I started with a nice loop from Rangoon on the Lubadh and proceeded to explore and figure out how the Morphagene works, and you can come along with me for the journey! This was my first Reel, although I think after filming this I realised I’d made a new reel and still had an empty first reel, but hey, I’m still learning and exploring how this module works! My goal was to create some nice ambient soundscapes from a relatively simple melodic loop, and I think I accomplished that, what do you think? Of course the Morphagene was helped along my Mimeophon and Beads, some of my favourite ambient making modules! Anyway, sit back & enjoy! MM.

Patch Notes:

Audio: Loop from Big T Music Rangoon on the @instruo Lubadh
Main Voice: @MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Morphagene
Audio Processing & FX: Mutable Instruments Beads & Make Noise Mimeophon
Modulation: ALM Pam’s New Workout & @DivKid Ochd"

Waves // Beads as a wavetable synth through the Instruo Lubadh

video upload by Mega Modularis

"For this week’s video I tried using the Mutable Instruments Beads as the only sound source, with nothing plugged in Beads becomes a wavetable synth, which I then modulated and fed into the @instruo Lubadh, before manipulating those recordings and feeding them back into Beads and Monsoon by Big T Music, as well as my trusty @MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Mimeophon delay. This resulted in a pretty interesting ambient patch I think, with some nice use of the time control on the Lubadh, and that lovely reverb-rich granulation of Beads and Monsoon, what do you think? Anyway sit back and enjoy! MM.

Patch Notes:

Voice: Mutable Beads, Instruo Lubadh
Modulation: ALM Pam’s, @DivKid Ochd
Audio FX & Processing: Instruo Lubadh, Mutable Beads & the Big T Music Monsoon"
