MSTRBLSTR - Pattern Clear Pattern Write
video upload by MSTRBLSTR
"MSTRBLSTR - Pattern Clear Pattern Write.
124 BPM machine-driven acid house - negative space, dub handoffs, tape delay + spring reverb. Brief clears, then a new polymetric logic takes over."
https://open.spotify.com/track/4dNO60... https://mstrblstr.bandcamp.com/track/...
"Machine-driven acid house at 124 BPM: transient-forward percussion with hollow-bodied punch, a constant bass groove that shifts in intensity, and an arrangement built on negative space and dub-style handoffs.
Tape delay and spring reverb open wide. Brief breaks wipe the grid just long enough for the pattern to snap back into focus. Then the momentum clears and a new polymetric logic takes over. Modulated melodic drifts change the room without abandoning the floor, leaving you somewhere familiar but newly yours.
Hardware: Din Sync RE-808, Roland TR-606, Roland/Tubbutec MC-2oh2, Cyclone TT-303, Alice 1228 mixer, Boss KM-60 mixer, Boss RCL-10 compressor, RE-201 Space Echo, Jeff Rubin Mu-tant Fly Phase, edited in Ableton Live.

Attack Release Bloc Glasgow -CALC- Live set rehearsal
video upload by -CALC-
"I played at Attack Release in Glasgow in July 2025.
Sadly the audio from the gig recording was crocked so it didnt make it, but I did film a rehearsal a few days before. The gig itself was better than this take (of course it was ;o) and I had tweaked the set quite a bit from this for the show, but it gives the general idea of what I played.
Attack Release is an amazing night and I thoroughly recommend it if you are ever in Glasgow on the last Wednesday of the month. It has to be one of the best gigs I have played with the best crowd ever. Sad the recording of the night didnt work out though."

Echo Fix EF-X3 - Five Synth Sketches with Tape
video upload by Jay Hosking
"Please support my work on Patreon: / jayhosking
Five song sketches featuring the EF-X3 tape delay, chorus, and reverb.
00:00 - Ambient, with Take 5
02:57 - Drums, with LXR-02
05:47 - Brooding, with SH-101
07:20 - Acid, with TT-303
09:41 - Ambient, with MS-20
Fair warning: MAS Distribution sent over the EF-X3 for me, not quite for free (I had to pay some significant customs/duty/taxes from the border) but for far less than the full retail price.
Here, I explore the Echo Fix EF-X3, a real tape delay with analog chorus and spring reverb. My favourite feature of the EF-X3 is that it has discrete outputs for each of the four tape heads plus another output for chorus/reverb, which means you can get some incredibly stereo tape delay mixes with it. Here, I usually panned two heads full left/right, and two heads 50% left/right, with the dry out and chorus output slightly panned and near centre. Ages ago, I had an Akai Headrush and I always loved having such a ludicrous amount of outputs; it's exactly the same delight here.
But I have to say, using a real tape delay is unlike any digital emulation I've tried. It's less behaved and has more texture than I had expected. And while it shouldn't matter, seeing the tape running is a thrill. It's an incredible physical presence on the table, super solid and with beautiful wood on the sides.
No one needs a real tape delay, of course, just like no one needs an analog synth and no one needs hardware. But for someone who has loved those records with long, cascading tape delays, for someone who loves the physicality of hardware, I've felt incredibly lucky to have the EF-X3 up on the table.
Thanks for listening.
Recorded to a DAW as a multi-track (dry channel, chorus/reverb channel, and channels for each of the heads) and mixed afterward. No external effects on the sound. EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Walrus Qi Etherealizer - exploration w/ hardware synths (SH-101, Prophet Rev2, 303, Nymphes, OP-XY)
video upload by Jay Hosking
"Trying out Walrus's new multi-effect with some hardware synthesizers.
Full disclosure: Walrus sent this pedal along for me to try for free. I'm a big fan of their Slöer pedal and also really like the Meraki (both of which I bought with my own money), so I was happy to give the Qi a spin. Happy to report that I am super impressed with this one. You can think of the Qi as kind of complementary to the Hologram Chroma Console: if the Chroma Console gives everything grit, colour, and texture, the Qi gives everything space, width, and ambience.
Here, I use it with a few synths I love and found myself lost for my entire Sunday exploring what the Qi could create with the right synthesizers. In fact, one of the improvisations (not in the final video here) has turned into a full song, which I'll put up as soon as I have time to record a performance. It's a really inspiring pedal and works very well with hardware synths.
00:00 - with Prophet Rev
04:25 - with Cyclone Analogic Bassbot TT-303
06:34 - with Dreadbox Nymphes
10:02 - with Teenage Engineering OP-XY
12:33 - with Roland SH-101
Recorded live to a stereo output, with only limiting on the master (no compression, EQ, or other effects).

"This take on a classic TB-303 is sure to give you all of the acid bass lines and sequencer madness that you've ever yearned for. As well as having improvements over the somewhat clunky workflow of the original Roland bass line synth, this Bass Bot is the second version that Cyclone has put out, offering a new design, customizable LEDs and an unbelievable 432 user patterns with 64 steps for each one. This guy does come with its original box and power supply, but the deck saver and bag are notably absent."

Bass Bot.mod with BA662
video upload by Alexey Taber
via AMSynths:
"The BA662 is a custom made DC controlled variable transconductance amplifier (or OTA) that Roland had manufactured by Rohm from 1978 and is now obsolete and very expensive. There are two types of chip with different suffices; the A version has been selected for lower offset than the B version. They are further classified by gain/gm. The BA662B can only replace another BA662B, whilst an A can be used in either application.
To quote Roland from the 100M Service Manual: 'color has great importance in the circuits of some models'. However there is nothing mystical about the sound of the BA662, it is just a reasonable good OTA chip which is often carefully matched and selected."
And via Sunshine Jones:
"The Roland BA662A VCA chip is the Voltage Control Amplifier IC from the Roland SH-101, TB-303, Juno-60, JX-3P etc. which is a part of what makes it sound so wonderful. These can also be found in the Jupiter-4, the Jupiter-8, and MKS-30,50 and 80. They have counterparts – The Roland BA662B (B stock versions of the A) and also a cousin IC the BA6110 which is similar, and looks virtually identical under a scope, but the power comes from negative rather than positive, and so it won’t work exactly the same way."

AudioPilz Built ReBirth FOR REAL and This Happened (Bad Gear)
video upload by AudioPilz
"Welcome to another non - Bad Gear episode. I built ReBirth for real and this happened. Propellerhead Rebirth RB-338, the iconic 90s music production software and virtual groovebox was my first electronic musical instrument. Since then I had the dream of reconstructing the classic setup consisting of a Roland TR-808, a Roland TR-909, two Roland TB-303 and specific set of effects. Can we recreate the software workflow, are the famous vintage instruments as great as anybody is telling you and is all this worth the hassle?

Ambient bliss with the Walrus Slöer reverb and synths! (Nymphes, Moog One, TT-303, MS-20)
video upload by Jay Hosking
"Trying out Walrus's new stereo reverb with some hardware synthesizers.
I recently purchased the Walrus Slöer and thought I'd try it with some hardware synths. The Slöer is an update to their Slö pedal, now with stereo input/output and a couple of new algorithms. I'm extremely impressed with the overall sound of it, and got lost in my explorations. It's got a particular texture and character that's unlike my other reverbs, and I can foresee myself using it for other ambient work in the near future. In fact, I wrote the start of a few songs while noodling with it!
There's about 90 minutes of footage, which is available for supporters of my Patreon, but I trimmed it down to about 15 minutes for YouTube. And for those of you who prefer my actual music performance videos, I've recorded a song with the Slöer and will release it in about a week, when I have a moment to get it in shape.
Thanks for listening, and I hope this is useful and musical.

Arps and acid with Midicake ARP, Arturia Minifreak, TT-303, Dreadbox Erebus, Roland TR-06, Meris LVX
video upload by Jay Hosking
"A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
Important note: Midicake sent me over the ARP for free. I rarely get free gear, though I'm very grateful when it happens. There was no expectation for me to put it in a video, and no request from Midicake other than to share my thoughts with them. That said, I really enjoyed using it and I'll be keeping it around, as it strikes a nice balance between the "plug-and-pretty" of the NDLR and the "depth and detail" of a traditional sequencer. I've still got plenty to explore with it. Thanks, Chris!
I started with the ARP, because I wanted to see what it could do. I didn't want to overload the table at first, so I took out the Minifreak, which has voices to spare. Very quickly I was creating arpeggios and sequencing lines I really liked, and easily able to customize the lines to what I was looking for, from rhythms to polymetrics to inversions etc. I started with just standard major and minor chords, but it was extremely easy to customize the chords on the eight chord buttons once I wanted some 7ths and 6ths. And to have a chord sequencer built in was extremely helpful, as it reduced the amount of gear I needed on the table.
Once I had the bones of the song structure, I filled out some more parts, with Erebus on bass and the TR-06 on drums. Finally, I felt it needed something a little gnarlier around the interlude, and luckily I'd just picked up the awesome 303 clone from Cyclone Analogic. Once that was in place, it was just a matter of shaping the song through performance parameters. The final result is pretty cool, and adds some tones, timbres, and textures I haven't been getting as much these days.
Thanks for listening.
Midicake ARP - most sequencing (i.e. for Minifreak and Erebus)
Arturia Minifreak - three synth lines
Dreadbox Erebus - bass synth
Cyclone Analogic Bass Bot TT-303 - acid bass (using its own sequence)
