Knobcon 22: Isla Instruments SP2400 Updates and Plans

video upload by sonicstate

"Isla Instruments SP2400 is a loving tribute to the original SP1200 - considered by many to be the finest drum machine ever made.

The SP2400 is a sample based drum machine and sample player with many specific features designed to make the groove work.

Jim talks to Brad Holland about the updates: double the voices for starters from 8 to 16 stereo and 8 stereo live loops. There are also plans to introduce more hardware enhancements such as a DSP card for internal FX, plus more analog filter processing."

Aha - Take On Me | Why are these drums so recognizable? | Tutorial w/ the Isla Instruments S2400

video upload by Espen Kraft

"In a recent gig I had to recreate the openings of more than 40 80s chart hits. One song was 'Take on me' by A-ha. The song starts with the only drums and it has a very recognizable drum part. As I studied the drum pattern I realized there was some genius programming at work here.

The drums used in this video are my own custom drums, not taken from the recordings. The sounds of my remake (synth sounds used) are not meant to be carbon copies of the original either, that was never the intent nor was it required by the client."

Audient ASP880 | 8 channel preamp capturing some synths and a drum machine

"Gear used in this demo: Audient ASP880, Roland JX-3P, MFB Dominion 1 and the Isla S2400.
When recording the separate outputs of my drum machines I find the Audient preamps to be crisp, transparent and very usable.

With the ASP880 you have 8-channels, insert/return points at the back, ADAT out and lots of gain. Very uncomplicated to setup and integrate into your setup. It just works and sounds great."

From nothing to musique concrète with Isla Instruments S2400

video upload by MrMakingsound

Description française ci-dessous.

"Look mum, no sequencer !

Isla Instruments S2400 is a modern sampler inspired by E-MU SP-1200.
Yes, you can create vintage, lofi and dirty Hiphop/House/Techno with it, but you can also compose modern stuff with neat sound quality. Before the review (i'm still working on it), i wanted to show how to perform a musique concrète-ish track without using the sequencer. Nothing is written before, all the sounds are performed live with pads, faders and filters.

S2400 only, with une pincée de OTO Machine BAM at the end, because there is no reverb in the actual firmware. But i hope it will change (This is a message for Brad and Vlad ^_^).

How it works :

Instead of using discrete and short sounds on each track, i like to use very long recording as a library of sounds, textures and ambiances. With the faders help, i can change playhead position, volume and pitch for each track. Pads are used to trigger and re-trigger sounds, filters to make room for frequencies.

As files bigger than 64MB can't be loaded in the S2400 editor, changing playhead position needs to be done blind, but that's part of the fun. You never know what you will trigger next, you need to improvise, and each performance is unique."

Drum replacement in the 80s | Akai S700 audio trigger input

video upload by Espen Kraft

"Use the audio trigger input of the Akai S700 or X7000 to trigger samples live from any external source. A great way of playing live or as we did in the 80s when we had to replace drums from analog tape."

Featuring the Isla Instruments S2400.

What can you do with 1 synth and 1 drum machine? You can have some fun.

video upload by Espen Kraft

"One drum machine and one synth, doing all the work. The John Bowen Solaris set up to use 3 independent arpeggiators, each one mapped out to the mid- and lower part of the keys, while a regular patch is left to be played, at the upper part of the keys. The Isla S2400 provides the drums with some samples I made of the Roland DDR-30.
The Solaris makes it possible to set the arps up with different resolutions, modes etc, which can be a lot of fun.
One patch is overdubbed later, for a little more texture. In a "real" live setting that would have been played by a sequencer."

S2400 Initial Thoughts // Damn It Sounds Good.. With A Catch

video upload by Ricky Tinez

"The Isla Instruments S2400 is an incredible sampler with tons of features original SP1200 owners' wouldn't have even been able to dream of. But should Isla have gone a bit further, or was the design process as refined as it should have been? At times while using this sampler I found myself scratching my head, and other times I found myself applauding its speed and workflow shortcuts. I'm sure the S2400 will be apart of my workflow for a month or more but i'm not sure how long it'll last until i switch it out for another sampler, or... simpler (get it?)"
