Roland TR-909 Timing Issues

According to Innerclock Systems, makers of precision tempo-sync solutions, all Roland TR-909s suffer from rhythmic jitter:

"The TR-909 uses a single CPU that runs the whole circus and, like all computers it’s a serial process – it has many tasks to do. If the sequencer step trigger timing has no higher interrupt priority than any other task within the machine then, when the CPU has to deal with some other task everything else takes a back seat. That’s why she is a sloppy beast. Always was. Always will be..."

The Rev 4 update does not address the problem:

"Regarding the TR-909 Rev 4 Update – this was a Roland factory-addressed fault/software bug in the Rev 1/2 System EPROM:-

http://www.diprec.com/tr909/tr909.htm

The Rev 4 Update will correct long term cumulative sync drift when externally synced to Midi Clock from any source.

Rev 1 units will not sync to Midi Clock. Ever. Don’t bother trying.

Din-Sync and FSK external tempo-sync stability is unchanged with the Rev 4 Update.

This update does not address the more serious problem of sloppy timing within the machine itself. That would require a total software re-write and some hardware design changes which will never happen."

Read the full post on the Innerclock Systems blog.

Curious how the timing is on the new TR-8. If the TR-8 can precisely cover the TR-909, is it a better solution than the original?

Of course the question is whether you notice the jitter. There are plenty of 909 users out there.

Innerclock Systems Grid-Lock Now Available for Download

via Innerclock Systems

"Grid-Lock is a useful utility when used in conjunction with Sync-Gen II allowing accurate delay/offset calculation between your externally synchronised hardware and the DAW quantise grid with minimal fuss.

There are two separate causes of this delay:-

1: External Hardware Start Lag – Slave Sync External Start Lag is the time it takes for any hardware sequencing device to respond to external tempo-sync and begin playback.

2: DAW/Audio Interface Driver Processing Delay – All computer audio interfaces and audio software processing applications take a certain amount of time to get sound in and out of the computer. Depending on the computer specification and hardware audio interface driver design, you will have various options to adjust this processing time using the audio driver buffer value – less means faster real-time I/O processing but this pushes the computer to prioritise audio throughput above other tasks and it will eventually trip over itself and start to glitch and drop audio. Larger Buffer settings work well for mix down where real-time soft synth playing latency is less of an issue. It also means large track counts and heavy plug-in use will not compromise the audio playback. However, there will always be some DAW I/O processing delay and getting an accurate value is indispensable for creating rhythmically tight productions."

Sync-Gen II Quantise Grid Offset Analyser

via Innerclock Systems on Facebook

"It's been a bit quiet between FB posts people but that doesn't mean we are asleep in the lab of course We have been hard working on a useful utility Plug to accurately and automatically calculate the DAW Grid-Offset of your external tempo-synced hardware - screen shot not quite final - this will be a no charge 'thank-you' gift to all of the Sync-Gen II customers around the planet that have supported us so passionately since day one. Final Build due late next week once final tests are complete. Reason Rack Extension is still in development also - sorry for the wait. We have some very exciting new hardware in development due for release later in the year as well. Best wishes to all - David"

Sync-Shift ITB Added to Sync-Gen II

via Innerclock Systems

"Selecting the new Sync-Shift ITB Option Menu provides settings that allow you to delay the Start Position of Sync-Gen II relative to the DAW Tempo-Grid in precise rhythmic divisions. This unique feature allows you to set a full two bars start delay for your external tempo-sync hardware if you wish to give your DAW project a traditional ‘count-in’ period when tracking externally sequenced audio. Applying more complex combinations of offset values also allows for further creative external hardware syncopation by delaying the external start in rhythmically interesting ways."

Published on Dec 21, 2012 Chris Cowie·13 videos

"Song arrangement constructed live using the mixers faders.
Equipment used:
MPC4000 - All chord stabs and drums + its the Sequencer for all parts.
Innerclock Systems Sync Gen - syncs MPC4k to Daw
Xfer Nerve Vst drum machine - some extra percussion
Dark Energy - Noisy metallic sound
Moog Voyager - Bubbly synth noise
Ensoniq DP 4 - Delays

Mix recorded straight as a stereo file - no post mixing, what you hear and see is how it happened. Some stuff you dont see me doing such as tweaking the Dark Energy and sometimes using the pad mute function of the MPC4k to mute tracks/parts"

Cyrusrex (USA) – Sync-Gen IILS – Depeche Mode Tour Support

via Innerclock Systems where you'll find more pics.

"I used your Sync-Gen IILS module during our recent tour as support for Depeche Mode which went really well.

Here are some pre-tour test shots, a couple of shots from the actual shows and some sound-check setup shots. Finally a shot from a live show/modular synth Q+A lecture in Copenhagen where we talked about your module. The Sync-Gen IILS module and Sync-Gen II software was completely stable and was the center Tempo-Clock distribution for all of our equipment. It was vital to our success on the tour providing rock solid sync to the Modular, MIDI clock to the Delay pedals, and Din-Sync to the Devilfish TB303.

Modcan Touch Sequencer, Innerclock Syncgen IILS, Ableton Live 8, STG filters

Modcan Touch Sequencer, Innerclock Systems Syncgen IILS, Ableton Live 8, STG filters from Equinoxoz music solutions on Vimeo.

"This is just a little patch (very simple) using two channels of the Modcan Touch Sequencer, I mainly did it to check how tight it follows the SyncgenIILS (which it does indeed seem to be quite tight!).

The STG filters were used, quite frankly because they sound magnificent! Sea Devil with a Modcan Triple Osc is running into the Sea Devil, the bass patch is a Dinsync OSC303 into a Super Sawtor, then into an STG Wavefolder before finally a Post Lawsuit filter.

The Cyndustries Four Transients are what I used as envelopes, very snappy analogue designs and aside from that just some samples from live for it to go along with.

I really enjoy messing about with this especially with the timing being so tight, it makes coming up with stuff a joy really! the SyncGen-IILS really is awesome for getting this stuff happening quick and easy."

Elektron A4 Sync Gen II

Published on Feb 19, 2013 innerclock2004·29 videos

"Sorry for the handheld camera! Quick video showing how Sync-Gen II allows for easy and accurate compensation of start lag in external/slave sequencers and drum machines. The mighty Elektron A4 is a nice example - the Start Lag is just over 23ms which would normally cause some sea sickness when slaved. Sync-Gen II allows for 4096 samples (85ms) Advance or Delay over your DAW External Tempo Sync."
