Tech Talk: SubMarine (Electronic Beats TV)

video upload by Telekom Electronic Beats

"In this Electronic Beats Tech Talk we welcome SubMarine onto the series, a German producer operating in the field of Liquid-tinged Drum & Bass, Half Step and Bass influenced electronic music.
Here we see SubMarine walk us through his production process, which usually makes it start in the FL Studio DAW to create his signature raw, snappy drum breaks. He also works with an amalgamation of soft synths, both integral to FL Studio and third party plug-ins like Serum, to create the textural atmospherics, gnarly bass lines and hazy chords heard in his music. Out of the box SubMarine makes use of the drumming skills developed in his childhood, recording his own percussion to later process, as well as utilising hardware such as Elektron’s Analog Heat and a vintage custom pedal handed down from his father. Check the video for a more complete glimpse into the approach of this talented figure in the contemporary Drum & Bass / Bass scene."

ReBirth RB-338 - Red Stripe Mod Demo

video upload by peff .com

"The Red Stripe mod for ReBirth RB-338 was a collaborative effort with Thomas and Wolfgang Merkle of Bitplant. This project was organized as a branding campaign in 1999, through the beverage distributors' UK marketing agency, 5emedia, LTD.

In order to establish the fast drum roll effects, the transport is set to run at 338 BPM, and two pattern slots are required to complete a full measure of 32 steps. I had quite a few keyboard shortcut hacks set up on my version of ReBirth RB-338 which helped me quickly work around these complicated pattern arrangements."

WTFM Wavetable FM Synthesizer (RackExtension for Reason)

video by Turn2on Software

"WTFM is not an FM synthesizer in the traditional sense.
Rather it is a hybrid synthesizer which uses the flexibility of Wavetables in combination with FM synthesizer Operators.
WTFM Wavetable FM Synthesizer produces complex harmonics by modulating the various selectable WT waveforms of the oscillators using further oscillators (operators).

WTFM is not an FM synthesizer in the traditional sense.

Imagine the flexibility of the FM Operators using this method. Wavetables are a powerful way to make FM synthesis much more interesting.

WTFM is based on the classical Amp, Pitch and Filter Envelopes with AHDSR settings. PRE and POST filters include classical HP/BP/LP modes. 6 FXs (Vocoder / EQ Band / Chorus / Delay / Reverb) plus a Limiter which adds total control for the signal and colours of the Wavetable FM synthesis.

Operators Include 450+ Wavetables (each 64 singlecycle waveforms) all sorted into individual Categories.

The synthesizer includes a basic Modulation matrix for the main settings, special FX mod matrix, and also individual modulation routings to the various synthesizer elements.

WTFM includes 5 special modes:

Traditional Wavetable (WT) synthesis. 4 oscillators, each including 450+ Wavetables sorted into categories.

Classical 4-OP FM synthesis: each operator use 450+ Wavetables to modulate other operators in various routing variations of 24 FM Algorithms.

FM WT MOD SYNTHESIS: The selected Wavetable modulates the frequency of the FM Operators (Tune / Ratio).

RINGMOD Synthesis: The selected Wavetable modulates the Levels of the FM Operators similarly to a RingMod

FILTER FM Synthesis: The selected Wavetable modulates the Filter Frequency of the synthesizer.

This is a modern FM synthesizer with easy to program traditional AHDSR envelopes, four LFO lines, powerful modulations, internal effects, 24 FM algorithms. Based on the internal wavetable's library with rich waveform content: 32 categories, 450+ wavetables (each with 64 single-cycle waveforms), up to 30,000 waveforms in all.

Classical oldschool FM synthesizers give control of the Operator Levels and Ratio as a main function. WTFM additionaly works with the Operators, morphing waveforms of the selected wavetable. The era of oldschool FM synthesis is now moving to the future.

Should you wish however, you can of course go back to its origins using the included classical waveforms

REASON SUBTRACTOR - The Classic Vintage Software Synth

Woody Piano Shack

"Demo and review of REASON STUDIOS PROPELLERHEADS SUBTRACTOR synthesizer from REASON 11. Subtractor is one of the very early software synths and is still going strong and sounding great today.

We'll discuss some history of this 20 year old vintage software synth from 2000, incredible to think, I'll give you a tour of the instrument, play you some sounds and hook up some other REASON effects, like PULVERIZER, RV7000, QUARTET CHORUS and jam to some loops provided by DR OCTO REX!

If you like this topic then we can cover some more of the REASON RACK, and perhaps explore other vintage software like PROPELLERHEADS REBIRTH which was an incredible and truly game changing instrument."

Introducing Friktion Modeled Strings

Reason Studios

"Friktion Modeled Strings is a physical modeling string instrument from Reason Studios that pairs realistic strings with the sound design potential of a synthesizer. Adjust the bow pressure, the sustain articulation and player’s technique – even the size and shape of the instrument itself. Whether it’s an authentic violin or an imaginary space harp, Friktion is highly expressive and simply a joy to play."

Friktion Modeled Strings: Getting Started in the Reason Rack

"Few things can compare to the sound of a real instrument. The vibration of a string, the pressure of a finger and even the wood used for the body all makes it come alive. We built Friktion to capture the all those nuances and put them in your rack, under your fingertips. It adds that special something to any piece of music, but you don't need years of practice to play it.

With its synthesizer workflow, Friktion can sound like the string instruments you love or entirely new ones yet to be invented. All the important aspects of sculpting a realistic string sound are within reach, but the controls go beyond what's possible in the real world. With a few clicks you change the instrument shape and size, or make the strings buzzy and metallic—creating a new instrument that still sounds decidedly real and is expressive to play.

Controlling Friktion is remarkably easy. An octave of control keys changes how the instrument is played in real time. Bowing, plucking, vibrato, tremolo, gliding up and down the strings and even harmonic overtones are just a key press away. Add in the mod wheel for articulation and you'll have an expressive string performance all your own.

Features
- Advanced physical modeling string synthesizer
- Way beyond samples—full control over every aspect of the sound and performance
- Control keys for realistic expression using just a MIDI keyboard
- Comprehensive articulation including bowing, pluck, tremolo, legato, vibrato and much more
- Tweak your sound to perfection, or go beyond what a real instrument could
- Comes with 140+ patches, from classic instruments to brand new sounds

Please note: Friktion Modeled Strings requires Reason 10.1 or later and is not included in Reason 11 Suite."

Ukuthula by YLEM

This one is in via YLEM who had the following to say about the piece:

"I recently realized a work that to me is quite evocative.
It is called UKUTHULA that in zulu language means 'silence'.
The work is quite long and abstract but I think it could inspirational.
I realized the piece with Reason11 and all you hear is made exclusively with noise generators, LFOs, filters and effects.
There are no sample.
The only exception is of course the final part.

Introducing Beat Map, the Algorhythmic Drummer (with Mike & Keys)

Published on Feb 24, 2020 Reason Studios

"Beat making and Reason go hand in hand! And today, we are thrilled to announce Beat Map, a brand new Player that will change the way you approach drums. We sat down with Grammy-nominated producers Mike & Keys to talk about Beat Map and here’s what they had to say."

Thought this was interesting from the perspective of creating music by actually listening to the music. It's more capturing moods than playing notes. More of an outside in vs. inside out approach. Kind of like creating patches from an existing patch vs. an initialized patch. There is an art to it.
