DS8 Drumstream — PlayStation Vita Drum Machine Walkthrough

video upload by Intermynd Instruments

"In this livestream I walk through DS8 Drumstream, a drum machine and groovebox for the PlayStation Vita.

I cover the main features in the current build, including the 8 drum tracks, step sequencing, voice editing, per-step automation, pattern tools, insert effects, send effects, master effects, and some of the performance controls built around the Vita’s physical buttons.

DS8 is still in active development, so this is an early look at the workflow, sound, and overall direction of the project.

DS-8 - An 8 Voice Drum Synth For The PS Vita [ Drumstream ]

video upload by Intermynd Instruments

"DS8 Drumstream is a homebrew drum machine and advanced groovebox for the PlayStation Vita, built around fast step sequencing, real-time drum synthesis, automation, and hands-on performance using the Vita’s physical controls.

DS8 turns the Vita into a compact drum instrument with eight drum tracks, up to 64 steps per pattern, real-time drum voice generation, per-step automation, insert/send/master FX, and pattern tools including Euclidean rhythms and random generation. The sound engine is synthesis-based, with no samples or wavetables.

The project is currently in active development and the first public build is available as v0.1 for homebrew-enabled PS Vita consoles as a free download."

You can find it here: https://intermynd-instruments.itch.io/ds-8

Additional details:

"DS8 Drumstream is a drum synthesizer and groovebox for the PlayStation Vita.

It turns the Vita into a compact drum machine for sketching ideas, building grooves, and performing anywhere. The app is built around eight drum tracks, a step sequencer with up to sixty-four steps, and direct control through the Vita’s physical buttons.

All sounds are generated in real time. No samples, no wavetables. Each drum voice can be shaped directly, with controls for tuning, decay, drive, pitch, noise, level, and more.

The sequencer supports mute, solo, per-step automation, pattern length control, step copy and paste, metronome, and pattern generation. Individual steps can have their own parameter changes, allowing for accents, ghost notes, tuned percussion, glitch fills, and evolving rhythms.

Pattern generation includes Euclidean rhythms, random patterns, alternating steps, every-N triggers, and preset templates.

DS8 Drumstream is currently in active development. This is an early v0.1 release, so bugs, missing features, performance issues, and interface changes should be expected."

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #147: Sony DPS-F7 - Song 1

video upload by Christian's Sonic Spaces

A synthesizer from Sony. You might remember the DPS-F7 & other units in the series from this previous post.

This video appears to be the first demo of the Sony DPS-F7 featured on the site.

"This is the first recording with the Sony DPS-F7. As far as I know, it's the only synthesizer ever made by Sony. However, it's only part of the DPS-F7, which can also be a percussion synthesizer, as well as a fading parametric equalizer, dynamic filter, compressor/limiter, sub-harmonic generator, vocoder, and saturator.

The features sound interesting for a monophonic digital synthesizer. It has two oscillators with classic waveforms AND two Karplus-Strong oscillators, which can be routed to any of the four filters (LPF, HPF, BPF1, BPF2). You can optionally connect the HPF and the two BPFs in front of the LPF. Six ADSR envelopes are available as VCAs and VCFs. The (unfortunately) only LFO is permanently linked to the pitch. The audio signal then passes through a stereo delay and a soft clipper.

I used for the recording the following FX pedals:
Pigtronix Echolution 2 Deluxe, GFI System Specular Reverb 2.

The signal went through a Presonus StudioLive 16.0.2 into the PC via USB for recording. To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. On some tracks Compressor and EQ where added in Cubase. The final song was then mastered using iZotope Ozone."

4x Sony DPS-Serie: D7, M7, R7, F7, Digital Studio FX + Synth, komplettes Set

Note: links to listings are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this listing

Note this is the first post to feature them. Apparently the F7 features a vocodoer with 2-oscillator monosynth and drum synth.

"ENGLISH DESCRIPTION (consult the German one too, as it may contain a few more details): You are bidding on a complete quartet of the legendary Sony DPS-7 series, including the rare F7 filter and vocoder module with 2-oscillator monosynth and a drum synth with 20 sound generators. I have another complete quartet, which is enough, so this one has to go. Everything is fully functional. There is the usual rack rash, especially scratches on the top surfaces (plus some on the D7's buttons), but nothing that goes beyond what you would expect at this age. The batteries are fully charged (and can easily be replaced if ever necessary). All the buttons, encoders and potentiometers work smoothly. Note that the F7 is a 110V version, so you'll need one of the usual step-down transformers to operate it in Europe. I have a semi-defunct DPS-D7 that may serve as a PSU donor in a possible transplantation.

Google translated from German:

The complete quartet of the Sony DPS-7 series is available here, i.e. D7, M7, R7, and the rare F7 with its filters, vocoders and the only synthesizer that Sony has ever built (a virtual analog monophonic and drum synth). Since I now have another copy of each of the four devices, all the surplus ones have to go, because one set is enough for me.

The four devices in question here are all in perfect condition. They have the usual rack installation marks, especially scratches on the top (also a little on the buttons on the D7), but otherwise nothing that goes beyond what is to be expected at this age. The pictures are pretty brutal. The batteries are full, the buttons don't stick and the potentiometers slide as they should. Note: the F7 comes in the 110V version. So it needs one of the usual voltage converters ("travel adapter", "step-down transformer" etc., which can be bought second-hand for a small price). Unfortunately I still need mine for another device, so I can't give it away. But I still have a DPS-D7, which works but has a few minor flaws and a 220V power supply. Since the devices are electrically identical, I would also sell the D7 if you are interested, so that a power supply exchange is possible."

CIRCUIT BENT PS2 - LSD: Dream Emulator / B.L.U.E. / GTA VC - Soft Modded, Internal SSD (FMCB)

video upload by LoFiFuture

"Taking on a limited number of these circuit bent PS2s for 2022! https://www.lofifuture.com/storefac96...

And for all the DIYers out there, I'm currently editing the tutorial one how to circuit bend your own PlayStation 2!

This modification starts with a full disassembly and deep clean of the PS2, the optical drive is removed in favour of an internal HDD and a memory card running Free McBoot. (Free McBoot is a custom firmware that runs on a memory card that resides in memory card slot two of the console. It introduces various features to the PS2, the main one being the ability to run game backup ISOs from an internal HDD, via ethernet or from a USB pen drive)

Once the optical drive is removed 23 toggle switches are mounted on the top of the console to control the circuit bends a long with a RCA video out and 3.5mm stereo audio out omitting the need for the original Sony AV cable. 14 of the toggle switches are wired into the traces between the Emotion Engine (EE) and Graphics Synthesizer (GS) chips on the PlayStation motherboard. These corrupt the 3D data running into the GS before they are sent to the video output encoder.

9 of the toggle switches are wired into the Sound Processing Unit (SPU) RAM for some circuit bent audio effects. all 23 of these switches are wired to the same "bend bus" meaning that when two or more switches are in the "on" position they are connected together. Connecting the audio data bends to video data bends results in chaotic and mesmerising cross modulation.

Every game is effected differently by the toggle switches. Some are easy to crash with certain switches. Some games will take everything you throw at it and then some! It all depends on how the game you are trying to glitch out was programmed and how it utilises the hardware we are mercilessly forcing into a corrupted state. It helps to make a "switch map" for any game that like to crash when things get to glitchy, this was you can easily rule out what does and does not work for a particular game.

For example, running the PS1 copy of LSD: Dream Emulator produces some incredible effects but likes to crash when I flick one particular section of switches into action. On the other hand, GTA: Vice city will run with every single toggle switch on and revert back to completely normal visuals.

Includes:

-Circuit Bent PS2 Console (PAL or NTSC, select from the dropdown)

- Aftermarket PS2 controller

-Internal 120GB HDD + Network/HDD card"

1982 Sony CFS-C7 Chord Machine Ad

Another find via @deejayiwan, via @nightliquid_retro

Videos further below.

"In the early 80s, the portable consumer electronics market was still in its infancy; many companies were still testing the waters with incredibly innovative products. Here’s a perfect example: What you see above is an analog drum machine, a chord generator, a cassette recorder, a AM / FM radio and a boombox, all in one device - Sony's CFS-C7 Chord Machine. Connect a guitar or a microphone, select a drum pattern, program some chords, hit record & make musical history. 😎🎢"
