Raglani Interview and Call for Help on Stolen Gear

This is a bit of a double post. First there is a great interview on Raglani in the River Front Times here. The article covers Raglani's use of synths. It also covers a very unfortunate event.

"On May 16, as Raglani was beginning his first U.S. tour at Brooklyn's experimental-music festival No Fun Fest, his van was burglarized and all of his electronic gear — synthesizers, effects pedals, speakers, merch and more, all valued at nearly $10,000 — disappeared while Raglani stopped for dinner.

Any musician or artist can sympathize with the devastation that accompanies such a loss; the sentimental value of losing, say, your first electric guitar or a journal full of sketches is normally as great as the financial hit. But for a musician like Raglani, who uses vintage analog synths alongside newer (and pricey) boutique gear, these instruments can't be replaced with a trip to Guitar Center."

stolen synths in NYC area

Help if you can and remember folks, write down your serial numbers and keep them somewhere safe.

Update: another tip from Loren: "people ought to also take photos of thier gear in their homes... insurance companies want to SEE that stuff to give concrete proof that the gear was owned by the individual that was robbed. - Loren"

Something else I heard was to mark your synth on the inside or underside. Not too crazy about marking the original condition of a synth, and having people open them up, but for older used analog gear, the marks might already be there. Photograph them and keep them online somewhere.

MOOG Minimoog Voyager OS Stolen from the Musikmesse?


Word from Amos of MOOG Music on the Analog Heaven list is that this Voyager OS listed on Ebay.de was stolen from the Frankfurt Musikmesse.

"So some clever fellow stole one of the world's only Voyager Old School prototypes from the Frankfurt Musikmesse... and lo and behold, it is on German eBay! My good friend Jens Steinmeyer called me from Germany to alert me to this one. It's .de item number 180224511106, see for yourself. Jens has alerted the local constabulary, but if there is anything else the global analog community can do to make sure that the thief is caught, by all means lend a hand... thanks!"

Update: BTW, Amos has requested that Ebay not be notified so the local authorities can follow through.

Update via actuel in the comments: "Elektron the same night had a Monomachine MKII & Machinedrum/UW MKII also stolen. I will definitely point them to this Ebay seller."

Update: The thief has been caught!!! via Amos of MOOG Music:
"UPDATE: The thief has been caught, and Moog and Elektron were not the only victims! Here's the news via Stefan Hund of EMC (Moog distributor in Germany):

"YES, we were sucessful. Because this guy was so stupid to offer the prototype at Ebay, the police did get his address very quickly from Ebay monday morning and arrested him monday aftersoon with house search!! The police found a lot of stolen stuff including the Voyager OS. This guy was "singing like a bird" and told did steal stuff from 7!! more other companies.

In present the OS is safe at the police station at Frankfurt, will pickup the unit next week."

Modded Matrix-12 Stolen

Stephen wrote in to let me know the one of a kind modded Matrix-12 pictured here was recently stolen from a friend of his. "the instrument can be instantly recognized, and the mod is described in the caption ['a trip down memory lane. this is the 'matrix 12' which confused so many reviewers back in 2002 when i released Crashing the Russian Renaissance. note cyclone arpeggiator on right side, it is a monstrously powerful device for creating ostinatos and repetitive figures out of nothing. sadly, the synthesizer was stolen from me in 2007. it can be recognized by a half dozen 1/4" jacks on the back and toggle switches which enable one to either process six external signals or pass voices 7-12 into voices 1-6 for additional processing. '] it's the only one in the world modified that way, i know that because i modified all four of them and this one is unique - none of the others have toggle switches.

a row of six 1/4" jacks in the middle of the back of the instrument, with six three-position mini toggles in a line above them. the toggles control whether the jacks feed external signal to voices 7-12 or route voices 1-6 into voices 7-12. internally, the mod is distinguished by the use of test probes to access the individual voice outs by clamping to the pins on the stock 'external output' mod on the left side of the synth.

Once again: this is an instrument with provenance, the only one modified in this way that i know of. three others were modified _BY ME_, and can be recognized because they have 12 jacks on the back, a plastic plate that identifies it as a 'matrix 12 xpansion', and no toggle switches.

this one was modded by one of my collaborators with my assistance, it has _six_ jacks on the back approximately 1.5" apart from each other, in a straight line, roughly in the center of the back. above that is a row of six three position mini-toggles which allow the user to:

a-route the six synths in the bottom voice board into the six synths of the top voice board

b-do nothing

c-send line level signals at the jacks into the six synths of the top voice board.

there is no plastic plate on this instrument, the mod is clean but looks homebrewed. i never duplicated this mod, and to the best of my knowledge it never occurred to anyone else to duplicate this mod.

if the instrument is opened, it can be seen that the voice stacking option is done by running test probes with spring clips over to the hot pins on six of the voices on the stock multiple output modification made by oberheim.

additionally, the numbers for the multiple output mod have been peeled off because i had a bit of tape covering them up - in order for dan to make the mod work, he had to reverse the two banks of six jacks referencing the multiple outputs, so if you try to use them you'll find that they run
7,8,9,10,11,12,1,2,3,4,5,6"

Update on the Stolen Buchla


Previous post. More details:

"You may have heard, but the College's beautiful Easel was stolen sometime around the 29th or 30th of June from it's studio. This instrument had etching and a steel label fixed to the power-supply cover. It was stolen without it's cover.

We are looking into a suspicious person who showed up to take my summer class. A Ben Katz from California, who claimed to have a Roland 100 and an AKS from 'estate sales' was here for the week, and disappeared the same day as the Easel. We have the campus police seeking him. If you have any information or hear of any easels on the market, it may be ours. If anyone knows of this person, please forward information to me or campus police 360 867 6832 atten Pam Garland garlandp (at) evergreen.edu

Please distribute this information to any and all possible places to help us recover this instrument. I have been teaching with it for nearly 30 years, and cannot believe it has been stolen."

Stolen Buchla Music Easel

Somone stole Evergreen State College's Music Easel (pictured). If you know anything please contact pbr. To the person who stole this: if you managed to sneak it out of there, sneak it back in. You suck. This is the one Easel, that those of us who can't afford, can actually hope to see one day; I was hoping to see it. Other bloggers and site owners out there who read this site, please feel free to post this as well. Maybe someone that reads your site can help.

"Yes indeed we had our wonderful easel stolen this week. I am heartbroken as it was one of my first instruments here at the college. They did not get the top, so someone has an easel without the top in their possession. We have a possible suspect who I will release his name once the cops finish their initial investigation.

Please circulate this information as widely as you can.

Focusrite Stolen Gear

If you haven't heard, apparently a bunch of stock gear was stolen from Focusrite including Novation gear. Focusrite has a list up with serial numbers. It's simple. If they don't get paid for their work, they can't afford to work. If they can't afford to work they don't make our products. We lose in the end. Keep an eye out for this gear, either via matching serial numbers or missing ones. This is just plain bullshit.
