Sequentix Cirklon Sequencing Roland TB303 with Devil Fish Mod

Published on May 30, 2017 Meta Function

"In this video, Meta Function demonstrate sequencing a Roland TB303 with the Devil Fish mod via the Sequentix Cirklon.

The Cirklon is arguably the most intuitive and sturdy hardware sequencer ever made. It features five ports of MIDI I/O, four virtual USB ports and via the CVIO beak out box (BOB), sixteen CV and eight gate outputs. It has an incredibly tight clock and works great as the center of any electronic music based studio.

In this video the Fish receives note pitch and gate over CV/gate via the BOB. CV out 3 is connected to Accent in the Fish, with CV out 4 connect to Slide in. Inside the P3 pattern driving the Fish, Aux A is routed to CC 1 and Aux B is routed to CC 2, which in turn are routed within the Cirklon's CVIO Config menu to drive CV out 3 and 4 respectively. Whenever Aux A/B is over a value of 64, the measure features an accent/slide. A one bar pattern is created on the fly and slides and accents are added. Pattern direction modes are manipulated then drums from an Elektron Analog Rhytm are edited via a CK track. The one bar P3 Fish pattern is doubled and edited and transpose and force to scales modes are manipulated. Note measures are ganged/unganged and note lengths are tweaked. Finally the timebase is adjusted.

Audio recorded via Calrec S2 console and SSL convertors. All dry, no FX, EQ or compression. The only post production performed was normalization.

Watch at 1080p with good quality audio monitoring for the best experience.

Meta Function developed the Max For Live synthesizer, the Wave Junction in partnership with Sonicstate.com. A four voice paraphonic synth with 2 multi-mode osc, three multi-mode filters, 5 LFOs, 5 Envs and a 12 slot modulation matrix.

You can buy it from Sonicstate right here for £19.95:

Note: Ableton Live 9.6.1 and Max4Live 7.2.2 required."

Custom Roland TB-303 Devilfish 1984 White

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This is an original Roland TB-303 "Devilfish" with just about every modification Robin Whittle could stuff in this thing. It has more features than I can list. It has all sorts of output and input options, memory related switches, etc.

The white case is a custom anodized aluminum case by Martin Rothlisburger in Switzerland.

This 303 has a few problems. The DIN jack is damaged, and the resonance potentiometer has a damaged track. It still works good, but in some resonance settings, the resonance goes way into self oscillation.

Everything else is fine. It also has blue leds."

Devil Fish- True Profressionals

Published on Jan 2, 2016 TB-303 Devil Fish

"Just for fun, live acid breakbeat jam! Using the Devil Fish with the Overdrive knob(the amount of oscillator sent to the filter) turned up to 4 where 2 is the TB-303 normal setting, this gives the Devil Fish a larger than life aggressive bass tone. Running it through the Boss Metal Zone distortion pedal with distortion at a low setting, with the level and eq set to add to the grunt. I also have the Headphone Out of the Devil Fish routed back into itself via the Audio in to filter, which when I flick the Audio In to Filter switch on momentarily, you can hear it frequency modulate and squeal a little.

The Tr-606 is receiving Accent & note CV data to the Dynamic Bank Switching ins, from the Devil Fish which is turned on later in the jam.

Gate Out from the Devil Fish, and Headphone Out from the 606 to a 12 stage frequency divider are the clocking sources for the Eurorack modules René, Metropolis, and the Trigger Riot which are all modulating the Phonogene with the Sample from Scooby Doo (cartoon). The Metropolis modulates the Devil Fishes Filter freq In, the Trigger Riot triggers the Slide In and the High Tom from the 606 triggers the Accent in.

The TT-303 Bass Bot has a clean signal path (all effects its running through are in bypass mode)

The TR-8 has a small role with a noise hit and hand clap, and also the intro kick drum."

Devil Fish & TR-606 Dynamic Bank Switching 69er

Published on Dec 28, 2015 TB-303 Devil Fish

"Devil Fish and Roland TR-606 sending and receiving CV with each other in a 69er type fashion, via slew and attenuator Eurorack modules to switch between 4 Banks each. This creates rhythmic and melodic changes automatically leaving my hands free to tweak and work with other things. I also use the red Bank and red Accent buttons on the Devil Fish and 606 which sometimes changes both machines Bank state at the same time depending on what triggers are being sent from the patterns (great for freaked out fills).
The 606 sends a CV trigger from the High Tom to a slew unit, an attenuator then to the Devil Fishes DBS CVin 1, it also sends audio from the Headphone Out to a 12 stage frequency divider, an attenuator then to the Devil Fishes DBS CVin 2 this has the most effect when the Cymbals volume are turned up.
The Devil Fish is sending CV Out to an attenuator then to the 606's DBS CVin 1, it also sends Accent Out directly to the 606's CVin 2.
The Eurorack modules are clocked by the 606's audio via the 12 stage frequency divider and from the Devil Fishes Gate Out, the two sound source modules are the Make Noise Phonogene(ACID sample) and Epoch Modular Benjolin both being controlled and triggered by the Make Noise Rene and Intellijel Metropolis, the Metropolis is also modulating the Cutoff frequency of the Intellijel uVCF which the Benjolin and Phonogene are being filtered by, and the Metropolis is also modulating the Cutoff Frequency of the Devil Fish.
Various effect pedals are used and all audio is routed through the Roland TR-8 with Scatter effects used (the TR-8 allows the audio to be recorded into Abelton Live via USB). All played live with no computer or MIDI sequencing."

Custom Blue Roland TB303 Devilfish SN 021

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Up for grabs is a flawless, fully serviced and modded TB-303 with Devilfish mods and custom aluminum casing.

Professionally serviced and modded by Robin Whittle of Real World Interfaces in Australia

In addition, Robin also professionally mounted the TB-303 in a custom aluminum case from Acid.Ch

A little about the mods:

This machine is Devil Fish serial number 146 and was modded with version
2.1C. This is the only Devil Fish with Blue LEDs in the Devil Fish board itself. Normally the "e" gate LED and the ‘Normal’ and ‘Accent Decay’ LEDs are Red.

Just to the right of the Tempo pot, there is an extra switch on the left for enabling the Audio In to Filter using the 6.5mm socket on the rear panel. Center is Off. Up is On. Down is momentary On - with spring return to Center.

On the left, the unit also has the optional 32 bank memory system.

The Devil Fish sound modification provides the following additional controls:

Potentiometers:
Overdrive
Normal Decay
Accent Decay
Filter Tracking
Soft Attack
Slide Time
Filter FM

Switches:
Sweep Speed
Resonance
Muffler

Push button to momentary activate Accent

Additional interfacing on the back of the panel is also provided:
Gate, Accent and CV Outputs
Gate in
CV in
Slide in
Accent in
Filter CV in

The model does not have midi but can be synced via din-sync to other electronic instruments or can be played externally through the CV/Gate inputs etc.

If you LOVE the TB-303 like I do, this is your chance to pick up the ultimate example! The Devilfish mods really take the 303 to the next level! This is the ultimate ACID machine! The unit is in excellent shape and all switches, pots and buttons are perfect. It is extremely durable when combined with the aluminum case. It feels solid and durable and will probably outlast my lifetime. The case is like new with no scratches."

This one was listed back in February as DJ Sasha's also mentioned below.

via the seller:

"Please read through the entire description before bidding Up for sale is my Roland TB 303 Devilfish Analog Synthesizer/Sequencer. I bought this about 5 months ago and will be moving abroad in November so wanted to sell off some of my collection. I bought this from a DJ in NY that used to work with DJ Sasha and was told this belonged to him, I have no proof but no reason to doubt the story (just providing this as an interesting point of history and not as a selling point). The synth works great and I haven't had any problems with it. Physically it is in good condition, as can be seen from the pictures there are the usually scuffs on the edges and is in line with the previous 3 TB 303s I have owned.

In addition to the normal TB 303 functionality the Devil Fish modification provides the following potentiometers:
Overdrive
Normal
Decay
Accent
Decay
Filter
Tracking
Soft
Attack
Slide
Time
Filter
FM

The modifications also provide three switches:
Sweep
Speed
Resonance
Muffler

Additional interfacing on the back of the panel is also provided:
Gate, Accent and CV Outputs
Gate in
CV in
Slide in
Accent in
Filter CV in

The model does not have midi but can be synced via din-sync to other electronic instruments or can be played externally through the CV/Gate inputs etc."

Korg DW6000 SN 005992 w/ Robin Whittle Analog Filter Bank Input Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

via the seller: "DW6000 wavetable synth with wonderful real analog filters. This unit was modified by Robin Whittle (Devilfish 303 creator) to have audio input into all 6 filters and VCAs at once (Audio input replaces the useless Damper input on the back). Font panel controls were added for input volume and a kill switch for external input. I have used this for processing drums and vocals and the 6 stacked filters sound stunning. Turn down the oscillators and you can use the onboard LFOs and envelopes to shape the filters and VCAs. The NJM2069 Korg filter chips are now being remade into stand alone filter units because they sound so good, you get 6 stacked ones here!

The DW6000 has a very unique and warm sound. The wavetables are multisampled across octaves to reduce aliasing and with the analog filters the range of sounds is huge! I have a DW8000 and actually prefer the 6000's chorus to the 8000's awful delay. It blows the Poly 800 out of the water and with an external editor every parameter can be realtime controlled.

Functionally this is perfect but the front panel is a little warn around the data slider. See pictures. The parameter buttons work fine on this unit but as with all DW's they can wear out over time and double bounce. I haven't noticed that with this one."

"This auction is for a Roland tb-303 that has all the Devil Fish mods by Robin Whittle. The red LEDs have been replaced with blue ones and all pots and tact switches were replaced by Robin.

The mods include all the I/O and sound shaping enhancements, MIDI and extended memory bank. Included with the 303 are the Devil Fish manual, power supply recommended by Robin, as well as the DIN/MIDI daisy chain cord and audio/control cords provided by Robin.

This 303 is in perfect working order, looks great and sounds acid.

Also included in this auction is a Roland tr-707. The 707 is in perfect working order except for the snare voice which no longer sounds. There is no power supply for the 707."
