Comparing the Noise Generators between ARP2600 and Korg ARP2600FS. Big Difference!?
video upload by CGMAGIK
"I've been spending quite a bit of time comparing these two beautiful instruments. One of the big differences I came across was the noise generators. I'm surprised that they are so different, and would be curious to know if anyone has any thoughts about how one might change the 2600FS? Could it perhaps be modded by adding a different noise source? Is it adjustable? If someone from KORG is watching, I'd be curious to know how this came to be. Seems like quite an oversight to me.
A few minutes into the video, I re-patch so that we hearing the direct output from the noise generators.
p.s. My apologies that half of my head is cut off in this video! But you're really here for the ARPs anyways, right!"

Fun with Electrix MO-FX and some random thrift store records

"One of things I've always loved about the Electrix FX boxes is that they have a phono pre-amp built directly in to them! Fantastic for grabbing some random vinyl and having fun."

Manual Wave-Sequencing on the KORG EX-8000
video upload by CGMAGIK
"Discovered some new sound making possibilities with my old Korg EX-8000. it would have been so great if Korg had made this possible by adding the waveform selection as a modulation destination! I'm guessing I might be able to automate this in real-time with MIDI sysex messages likely. I'm going to look into that!"
Always wanted the same for the Roland JD-800.

TEMPERA - An amazing granular-synth-sampler instrument by Beetlecrab Audio
video upload by CGMAGIK
"Finally making another video! I'm long overdue. It's been a busy year and I also moved, which was a huge amount of work. I live on a beautiful island now though, so well worth it :) Back in the Fall of 2024, as I was preparing to work on a new film project, an ad popped up in my news feed. I think on Facebook, or maybe Instagram . . . It was for this new granular sample based instrument called the 'TEMPERA' by Beetlecrab Audio. It didn't take long after reading a bit about it and watching a few videos that I felt that THIS was something I needed to get! Perfect for the film I was going to be working on. Part of what I was going to do with the project was to record a handful of real musicians (voice, bass clarinet, trumpet and guitar) and then further manipulate and make samples of the performances I recorded. The TEMPERA seemed like it would be a really great tool for some of that work, and it was! It is months later now, the film is finished and I felt that I should make a quick video showing some of these patches, or 'canvases' as they are called, that I made.
The TEMPERA is an amazing and inspiring instrument and I'm looking forward to working more with it.
The film I worked on is called #vanlife and you can read more about it here

Sequential Circuits MAX Analog Synthesizer Presets Demo

video by CGMAGIK
"Just playing through all the presets on the Sequential MAX. Great little synth!"
via this auction
"Great little 80's analog synth. Sequential Circuits MAX. Lots of cool presets, and you can make your own sounds by using a patch editor on your computer. It was originally designed to be used with a Commodore 64, but there are many options now for Mac or Windows computers and even iPad/iPhone etc.
It is in very good condition and plays/sounds well. There are a few little scratches here and there, a small part of the number 5 button has come off, and the transpose button is missing. Although the previous owner replaced this with a meticulously cutout piece of eraser and you can't really tell that it's not the real button. It certainly fooled me when I bought it many years ago and I never noticed! Would've been nice if he told me about that, but I've never needed the transpose button so I guess it doesn't matter much. I am telling you here about it here thought! You can see all of these things I've described in the photos. Other than those little things, it is in very nice shape."

KORG M1 - exploring the original factory presets
video upload by CGMAGIK
"In 1989 I bought a KORG M1. My first big musical purchase. I think it was $2500 at the time and I took out my first bank loan to do it. An incredible synth and workstation in it's day and I used that thing HEAVILY for many years to follow. I used it all through my days at Berklee College of Music in the early 90s, for composing, sequencing, arranging and on many gigs.
This particular M1 is not the original one that I had, but one that was recently gifted to me by a local High School. It's missing the joystick, so luckily for all of you there is no gratuitous pitch bending action in this video :)
I'm surprised how great some of these sounds still are all these years later! Playing through these presets really brought back some great memories and feelings."

ARP OMNI-2 with Lexicon PRIME TIME 93
video upload by CGMAGIK
"I've had both these units for quite some time now, but both needed repairs.
I got the ARP back around 1997 (for only $100 at the time!). It generally worked fine for many years, but was missing the bass voices and the XLR output didn't work. As time went on, it developed some sustaining note issues etc. The Lexicon was given to me in non-working condition around 2004. I brought it to a few people over the years to try and get it working but never with any luck. For the past few years, I have a had a great tech working on some synths and studio gear for me (check him out! - www.shooksound.ca) and he was able to bring the Prime Time to life! The Omni-2 had a complete make over. New key bushings, total re-cap, all new sliders and now works and sounds fantastic. I just got both of these back today and what better way to celebrate their new found life than to plug them in together for some sweet sounds. AND SWEET THEY ARE!"

OXI ONE + Fender CHROMA POLARIS quick afternoon improv
video upload by CGMAGIK
"Playing around with my Chroma Polaris and OXI ONE sequencer today. Using 2 channels on the Polaris - although, amazingly for a 1984 synthesizer, this synth is 6 part multitimbral. You can run 6 different sounds on different MIDI channels and automate all the parameters on each channel. I think most other synths of that era pretty much only did note-on/note-off!"

These are CRAZY! ALL of the hidden waveforms on the Ensoniq ESQ-1
video upload by CGMAGIK
"I got the EPROM for the ESQ-1 that enables you to access the hidden waveforms 33-255. A small handful of them are pretty normal sounding, but the majority are really quite amazingly insane. It's like a broken ATARI 2600 or something. It gives the Ensoniq a strange 8-bit game console sampler kind of vibe. I'm looking forward to making some interesting and unique patches using some of these.
Watch at your own risk. Haha. It's an epic journey through some not very chill and friendly sounds."

In memory of Dave Smith / THANK YOU for the PROPHET-5 / One of the greatest synths of all time!
video upload by CGMAGIK
"Sad to hear the news of the loss of the great synth pioneer, Dave Smith. As a tribute, I wanted to record a short improvisation featuring his amazing creation - The Prophet-5! Such a beautiful instrument. Here are both the REV3 and REV4 together.
REV3 is going through the TC Electronic FlashbackX4
REV4 is using the Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo (sequence is provided by Five12 Numerology Software)
RIP Dave Smith"

KORG Polysix + POLY-61 Arpeggiator DUET
video upload by CGMAGIK
"I had this idea recently to try running both the Polysix and POLY-61 arpeggiators together to see what kind of cool sounds and patterns I could get out of them. Neither of them have MIDI, so if I want to have them running in SYNC with each other I needed to send them a trigger from a different device. I'm using my laptop running some old, and no longer available it seems, software called 'GUidMachine' by a company that was called 'Unbearable Devices'. It's a multi-temporal rhythmic generator, essentially a 4 channel drum machine with a lot of cool features. I am using the first 2 channels with a sample that has a sharp attack to use as a trigger to send to each of the synths arpeggiator trigger inputs. I was going to edit this video so it wasn't so long, but decided to just keep the whole thing as I like how it organically moves to some pretty cool spaces as I experiment with this setup. Thanks for watching!"
