Human League Biography

Saw this one on sequencer.de. Title link takes you to an interesting biography of the Human League. I didn't realize Adi Newton was part of the original lineup and left to for Clock DVA (note in the bio they refer to Clock DVA as Clock DNA. I'm guessing this is just a typo).

"Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh were two computer operators in Sheffield who both shared an intense passion for German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk. Armed with a few months' savings, Ware was able to buy a modest monophonic synth (a Korg 770S) that had just become available on the commercial market at an affordable price. Despite having never played a single note, Marsh and Craig set themselves the task of understanding the art of sound synthesis and it wasn't long before their combined enthusiasm began to exceed the limits of the cheap synth."

"The very first Human League demo contained Being Boiled, Circus of Death & Toyota City all recorded in mono and it soon caught the attention of Bob Last who ran a small record label in Scotland called Fast Records.

Being Boiled was released in June 1978 after the League and Bob Last had agreed a deal over the phone. Although the single had a limited amount of copies pressed, the song succeeded in attracting the admiration of NME whilst guest reviewer Johnny Rotten described the group as 'trendy hippies'! Being Boiled was completely at odds with the prevailing punk movement of the time. The track was a stark slab of electro that would influence many artists in years to come, memorable also for its lyrics that linked the slaughter of silk worms with Buddhism."

"Disappointed by the lack of sales, Virgin reacted swiftly by cancelling the League's proposed UK tour in November asking the band to support the Talking Heads instead. Reluctantly, the group agreed releasing a press statement that revealed their plans for the upcoming performance. With tongue firmly in cheek, the League suggested that they wouldn't actually be on stage for the performances and that their place would be taken by backing tapes and a slide show hinting that they would occasionally view the show as members of the audience. David Byrne and co failed to see the funny side and the League were dropped from the support slot."

The Roland System 100 semi modular synthesizer - playing around with the 'Being Boiled ' drum part.

video upload by S R DHAIN

"I think it should be de rigeur to make the being boiled drum pattern for every system 100 owner. It's like a rite of passage to ownership of the synth.

There's a tight sweet spot to get that thumping, meaty kick drum sound. Playing around with the noise options and filter settings on both units yields interesting results."

Human League: Being Boiled Interview and the Roland System 100

"Being re-Boiled"

video upload by Bonedo Synthesizers - Uploaded by bonedo1 on May 12, 2009

"bonedo.de war zu Besuch bei Martyn Ware, der uns einen Einblick in die Produktionstechnik von "Being Boiled" mittels des Roland System 100 und Korg 700S gibt."

via Jez:
"In the first videos, Martyn Ware discusses the joys of the Roland System 100 and the Korg 700s - Christmas presents from Vince Clarke no-less! He even gets the original 'Being Boiled' beat going on one of them. The later videos have Martyn musing on such things as production, the music business etc. Some wise and insightful comments from the guy. What with the early Human League albums relying so heavily on these fantastic synths, I can't imagine anyone better placed to discuss them. Perhaps Ronnie Martin from Joy Electric regarding the System 100 perhaps.

Also, my latest show for Musique Non Suck is dedicated to the early Human League between the years 1977 to 1980. Album tracks, demos, stuff from 'The Golden Hour of the Future' and some hissy live tracks. Hope you enjoy it if you get the chance. http://www.216productions.com/Radio_MusiqueNonSuck.html Show is live and streaming until late this Sunday December 20 GMT."

Spitfire Signature Library via The Human League's and Heaven 17's Martyn Ware

Spitfire presents: MARTYN WARE - NIC library

Published on May 29, 2014 Spitfire Audio·114 videos

"A look at our new signature library from the synth pioneer Martyn Ware - founder member of The Human League and Heaven 17
http://www.spitfireaudio.com/martyn-w..."

And the press release:

"Spitfire swells Signature Range with synthpop production pioneer Martyn Ware

LONDON, UK: compositional tools creator Spitfire Audio is proud to announce availability of MARTYN WARE - NO ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS — the latest addition to its swelling Signature Range of sample libraries (where legendary composers, producers, and sound-smiths curate award-winning sonic DNA for future music-makers) for Native Instruments’ KONTAKT 4 or 5 (Mac OS X 10.7 or higher and Windows 7 or later) — as of May 30...

A distinctive pattern, product, or characteristic by which someone or something can be identified. So reads a typical dictionary definition of the word signature. Spitfire Audio’s Signature Range sample library luminaries certainly have a signature sound, hence the apt appellation. As one of the most successful, influential, and prolific film composers of his generation, Hans Zimmer — with whom Spitfire Audio previously collaborated on the HZ PERCUSSION - LONDON library, a definitive collection of hybrid cinematic widescreen percussion ensemble excellence — surely needs little in the way of introduction, for example.

Today it is with great pride that Spitfire Audio welcomes another trailblazer to its legendary Signature Range sample library lineup with MARTYN WARE - NO ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS. This time namesake legendary synthpop production pioneer Martyn Ware — founding member of electronic trailblazers The Human League and synth-funksters Heaven 17, and also a revered record producer in his own right with a sizeable number of super-successful credits to his sought- after name with over 50-million sales worldwide for the likes of ‘Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll’ Tina Turner, American singer-songwriter Terence Trent D’Arby, and eternal electro-poppers Erasure — offers up an exclusive collection of favourite analogue synth and drum sounds from his prized collection of rarefied electronic delights. These include Korg’s mid-Seventies-vintage Mini-KORG 700 ‘simple’ analogue monosynth and the Roland System 100 semi-modular monophonic synth with which Martyn made his name on early Human League classics like ‘Being Boiled’ — though the examples used on MARTYN WARE - NO ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS were actually gifted to Martyn by Erasure synth Svengali Vince Clarke (who openly admitted to being influenced by those early electronic recordings) upon discovering that Martyn had long since sold his originals — and the early-Eighties-vintage Jupiter-8, Roland’s first truly professional programmable analogue polysynth that formed the backbone of Heaven 17 hits like ‘Temptation’. Before making their own distinctive mark on the hit parade, prior to owning a drum machine, Martyn and his Human League (and Heaven 17) synth-playing partner Ian Craig-Marsh’s make do and mend modus operandi involved rhythmically riding faders on the aforesaid System 100 and its associated Model 104 Sequencer to create bass and snare drums on the fly! Little wonder, then, that the then-young Vince Clarke sat up and took note during his fledgling Depeche Mode days.

Having joined forces with Vince Clarke to form The Illustrious Company, combining their talent to exploit the creative and commercial possibilities of their unique three-dimensional sound technology in collaboration with fine artists, the performing arts, and corporate clients worldwide, Martyn extensively lectures on music production, technology, and creativity at universities and colleges around the world when not working in his studio space at London’s Tileyard Studios complex — coincidentally, also home to Spitfire Audio!

By way of further background to the welcome MARTYN WARE - NO ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS release, Spitfire Audio co-founder Paul Thomson tellingly pays tribute to the accomplished individual in question before going on to introduce the latest Signature Range sample library itself: “Martyn’s a legend in the electronic music field. He’s a founder member of The Human League; his first massive hit was ‘Being Boiled’. And then he left to form Heaven 17 with Ian Craig-Marsh; they had another massive hit with ‘Temptation’, although American audiences may be more familiar with the hit ‘Let Me Go’, which was played hugely on KROQ and MTV over there. He went on to produce with huge success; he helped relaunch Tina Turner’s career with ‘Let’s Stay Together’ and ‘Private Dancer’. He produced Terence Trent D’Arby, Marc Almond, Erasure, and many others. His early albums were direct precursors, in many ways, to the directions that hip-hop took Stateside when it went electro in the early Eighties. We believe that the key to sampling synths is not just good signal chain, but it’s also the curatorship of the sounds, and this is a rare opportunity to share in Martyn’s sonic approach — the buttons and dials that he tweaks to suit his taste and his heritage. So we get to see what he can come up with on these machines — fantastic synths like the Roland System 100, Jupiter-8, and the Korg 700. We’ve also got a warped collection, which is kind of sound designed from this original material. We’ve got some modern interpretations, but it’s largely curated to be in the spirit of Martyn’s style — how the young electronic acts in the UK inspired the likes of Afrika Bambaataa with the burgeoning electro and hip-hop scene Stateside in New York and the South Bronx.”

It goes without saying, therefore, that Martyn Ware and his creative cohorts proved inspirational back in the day while MARTYN WARE - NO ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS clearly is inspirational today to anyone looking to make musical use of a broad selection of pads, leads, drums, effects, tempo-locked sequences, and all manner of curios created by the man himself, with additional sympathetic sound design by award-winning composers and producers — all presented in ‘Super Mono’ to provide a selection of channels processed via vintage Class-A analogue outboard. With over 270 piquant presets — some with up to five distinctly-different mixable signal paths — providing a total library size of 13.5 GB in compressed downloadable data from 25.1 GB of WAV files totalling 11,016 samples, such musical inspiration from a true trailblazer is unlikely to dry up anytime soon. Just ask the now-not-so-young Vince Clarke — all set to release his 16th studio album with Erasure, his third successful group since first hearing Martyn Ware’s time-honoured Human League tones 30-plus years ago!

MARTYN WARE - NO ILLEGAL CONNECTIONS can be purchased and downloaded directly from Spitfire Audio for an introductory promotional price of £75.00 GBP (subject to VAT within the EU) until June 12, 2014 (rising to £99.00 GBP thereafter) from here: http://www.spitfireaudio.com/products-page (Note that this will require a full version of Native Instruments KONTAKT 4 or 5 to run.)

Being Boiled - The Human League Synth Cover

video upload by Alex Ball

"Following on from my Roland System 100 feature video [posted here], here's a full cover of the Human League's first single, 'Being Boiled' from 1978.

Breakdown:
I was very fortunate to receive a copy of the original beat patch from Martyn Ware via Robbie Puricelli. Martyn had passed on that it might need to tweaking and experimentation, which wasn't surprising given the nature of analogue gear.

The patch sheet gave me the pitched noise part and the snare and I found I needed to add a bit of EQ from my mixer to dial those in too. I also had had to adjust the settings in tiny increments for quite a while until it sounded very close. Strangely, I had to use the white noise on my 100 to get it to sound like the original recording as the pink noise that they actually used sounded too dull on mine. Maybe it's the age of the unit now!

Interestingly, they used a technique explained in the 104 sequencer manual where a CV from one of the channels can be used to alter the clock speed. If this is dialled in correctly then the note value can be set for each step of the sequence. This is how they got a 4/4 pattern within 11 steps, instead of 16. As I wanted an exact tempo, I cheated and used an external clock pulse via midi.

A puzzle: After the initial beat, another drum sound joins in. It's a sort of bass drum, but it doubles the snare, rather than providing a typical bass drum pattern. This could have been a manual overdub, but it could have also been done with the other two drum parts because I've seen at least one photo of the Human League with two 102 expanders at this time. Either way, it isn't part of the patch on the original patch sheet.

Next, there's the narrow pulse wave rhythm that appears throughout the song, again, it's not part of the original patch, so it was presumably an overdub. Did they put down a clock pulse at the outset and then use it for synch of a 2nd pass? That's my suspicion.

Finally, if you listen you can hear a track of synth FX running continuously through through song. Often it's ring modulator atmospheres, but there's some definite filter resonance and filter LFO mod tweaking in places. My belief was that someone just sat there and tweaked for the entire song on an available track and they blended it in as a texture and I subsequently found an extended interview with Martyn Ware on the Bonedo website where he indeed confirms that they did exactly that. The thinking was to make it sound more cinematic.

Bass line:
Dead easy - two sawtooth waves on the miniKORG 700S with a little detune, no attack and max sustain ('singing') with no release ('sustain'). The 'sustain long' setting is used.

Roll the highpass filter up a bit and the lowpass slightly higher until it sounds right and make sure expand and bright are engaged for filter mod. That's basically it.

Vocals - double tracked, but I also used a 1979 Boss DM-2 on the send of my mixer for some vintage doubling. I don't know exactly what they did on the original, but it's definitely double tracked at the very least."

One of my favorite tracks from the late 70s (early 80s)
Being Boiled by The Human League from the album Travelogue (1982)
Composed by Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh with lyrics by Philip Oakey

Featured the Korg Maxi-Korg 800DV Synthesizer, the Moog Minimoog for percussion and the Boss DR-55 für drums

This cover song series contains my own recreations of my favourite songs from the last 50 years. The original music from which I take inspiration belong to their respective owners. I recreate tracks only for personal passion and to pay homage to these tracks.
My intention is not to create covers that sound exactly like the original (if you want to hear identical sounds, please listen the original). It's more of an inspiration with my sounds from the old synthesizers from the past and of course the great appreciation for the original performers and producers."

Being Boiled again - this time with added metronome

Published on Aug 25, 2015 Pi Synth

Omenie Synth Collection on Raspberry Pi Synth

"Boy oh boy you need to REALLY like the old Human League to survive a subscription to this channel ...

Here is Being boiled yet again, this time being used to demonstrate the improvements in the metronome over the last 24 hours.

First off, the blue pulse that slides along the 32 beats steps has got way smoother and is now in that 'Nails like Butter (™)' zone.

Second, the brightness of the metronome is now under the control of the sequencer. So any time you want a bright metronome, just command it to be brightened. Brightening is instant, fading is IIRd for that 'Smooother than Galaxy Caramel' effect.

And thirdly, and I think finally, the LEDs (or 'LEDs' if you insist) fade-out at a rate driven by the current BPM, in an attempt to maximize the ability to read the beat no matter how fast or slow your track is moving along.

I do have square and round LEDs available, but I much prefer the square ones, you get a giant bar of colour and the ONE just shouts at you."

Being Boiled - Martyn Ware demos Roland System 100 and Korg 700

Published on Dec 1, 2013 Failed Muso·59 videos

"Martyn Ware, founding member of the Human League and Heaven 17, as well as the British Electric Foundation and Illustrious, demonstrates the Roland System 100 and the Korg 700S 700. These are the original instruments that he and Ian Craig Marsh wrote and performed the original version of Being Boiled on.

This was the climax to a 45 minute talk given by Martyn, accompanied by the great Peter Howell of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, London, on the night of November 30th 2013. It preceded a performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra in the main hall, as part of their "The Rest is Noise" season. They performed works by Andrew Poppy, Michael Nyman and commissions by Anne Dudley, which saw the orchestra take on reinterpretations, or "remixes" of Art of Noise's "Into Battle" as well as a new work, Rhythm of a Decade, a mash up of themes from the decade, accompanied by a narration from Paul Morley.

All the other original members of the Art of Noise were present in the audience (Trevor Horn, JJ Jeczalik, Gary Langan), billed by them as a one off 30th anniversary reunion ;-)"

Update via Timothy Glasgow in the comments: "That's a straight 700; not a 700s."

He is correct.  The 700s had extra controls and a black case on the top left of the keyboard.  The 700 lacked this and had a wood or faux wood cover there.  In the video you can clearly see the wood.

"Rare chance to get hold of one of these, in great shape & fully working!*

This is a very basic analog synth, designed by David Cockerell who designed all the coolest EH stuff & also worked on the EMS synths, of course. It has a very growly, distinctive filter! Played from the 'keys' it's good-sounding & very straightforward (no envelope!) but spend a bit of time with it, mess around with the sliders while you're playing & you'll be surprised at the 'hidden' sounds you can get.

In very good shape, & I have cleaned the slider pots. If you check the clips on Youtube, you will notice they all sound awful. I think this needs to be played as much on the sliders as the keyboard, to manually open up the filter etc. Sliders were full of crackle & stiff to move, are now smooth & crackle-free. All the slider caps are original & intact, except the tip for the On/ Off switch which is missing- purely cosmetic! The cardboard back has a little wear around the sockets, & the battery clips in perfect condition, no sign of any leaks or corrosion at all.

There's a particularly nice PWM bass sound, very reminiscent of the riff of Being Boiled (Human League), which would have been a Korg 700s, I think?

*I'm not entirely sure what the deal is with the SENS setting. There is a Piezo mic stuck underneath the touchpad, which I'm guessing might re-trigger the filter if you tap the keys(?) Again, looking at Youtube, there are videos that claim to show it working, but I'm not convinced.. as far as I can tell, the Sens setting seems to have no effect on filter or triggering or anything..

Works from 2x 9v batteries, & has an internal speaker. I think this sounds great with batteries, through the speaker! There is a 1/4" Output socket & a 1/8" socket for a PSU **I have never used this with a PSU.. being EH you'd imagine it's 18v+, & I have a suitable PSU for my Electric Mistress, but I have a feeling this may be 9vAC. The only pic I've seen of a PSU with this (on Matrixsynth) was EH-branded & 9v- tricky to find any info on this! My advice- be careful & stick to batteries!!**"
