Korg Announces Mono/Poly for Propellerhead's Reason

"Korg Announces Mono/Poly for Propellerhead's Rack Extension Plugin Format for Reason

MELVILLE, NY, June 21st, 2013 - Korg's original Mono/Poly, released in 1981, was a monophonic/polyphonic behemoth that was popular worldwide. It provided four oscillators, a resonant filter, dual EGs and Modulation Generators, plus 4-way Synchro and Cross Modulation capability for creating aggressive and signature tonal effects. Mono/Poly was reborn as software as part of Korg's Legacy Collection - Analog Edition 2007.

The new Mono/Poly for Reason is a software version specially developed for Propellerhead's Rack Extension Plugin format for Reason. In addition to faithfully replicating the original sounds, the Mono/Poly for Reason also adds enhancements such as 128-voice polyphony (max), up to 16-voice unison, Mono/Poly up to date for use in modern music production.

Beyond perfectly reproducing the original, this version of Mono/Poly also greatly extends its sound-creating potential. An eight virtual patch matrix lets users route 159 modulation sources to modulate 35 destinations for creating complex, diverse sounds. Two integrated multi-effects and an arpeggiator deliver modern performance power and flexibility.

The software interface provides reorganized knobs and switches that resurrect the MonoPoly in a contemporary "rack-mountable" form for intuitive operation and sound-creating versatility.

Mono/Poly for Reason will be available for download at Propellerhead's web-shop shop.propellerheads.se on June 20th for U.S $49.00. Additional product information can be found at: www.korg.com/MonoPolyforReason"

Korg Mono/Poly | Four Play

Published on Jul 13, 2019 Alex Ball

"This is a synth I've been wanting to demo for a long time and it didn't disappoint.

The Korg Mono/Poly was released in 1981 and is the somewhat quirky sibling of the Polysix.

It's essentially a 4 oscillator monosynth with different waves, footings and volumes available on each oscillator. There's two independent LFOs, two envelopes, cross mod, oscillator sync, a 4-pole low pass filter that can self oscillate, pwm, detune, portamento, an arpeggiator, CV/trigger in and out and a couple of assignable wheels.

However...things then get very interesting in the "key assign mode" as this is where the "Mono" and "Poly" parts of the Mono/Poly are found. You can play monophonically with just one oscillator triggered or you can select 'unison' and have all four oscillators triggered simultaneously. Combined with whatever waves and footings you've selected on each oscillator this can get interesting.

In Poly mod you can have one oscillator per note with up to four-note polyphony OR select 'unison' and the oscillator count automatically changes dependent upon how many notes you're playing so that all four oscillators always sound.

The arpeggiator can behave in Mono or Poly modes too, which I utilised in my track.

With one vca and envelope there isn't individual note articulation when playing polyphonically so this is a paraphonic setup (tips hat to Marc D). There is a note damp switch to help (a little) with that.

I also have a Korg VCF FK-1 Synthe module in the studio at the moment which is a filter and envelope follower from the 700 series synths that Korg made into a stand-alone unit with a wah-style foot pedal in 1975. I ran my guitar takes through it which isn't captured on camera as it's happening on the floor by my feet.

Gear used:
Korg Mono/Poly (1981)
Ibanez Jem 7DBK (2002)
Korg VCF FK-1 (1975)
Fender Blues Junior II mic'd with SM57
Oberheim DXa (1984)
Sequential Circuits Drumtraks (1984)
Vocal "dahs" recorded with a C414s

Korg Legacy Analog Edition 2007

Title link takes you to the press release in German, Google translated here.

"With the new KORG Legacy Collection - similar to edition 2007 (AE07) KORG starts perpendicularly into the new year 2007! The tradition always in the field of vision offers KORG with the similar to edition 2007 the legendary KORG mono/Poly, a classical author of the similar Synthesizerära, which brilliert with authentic sound quality however many new features and possibilities.

Technically the electronic is based mono/Poly on KORG' s of revolutionary CMT software, which considers all aspects of the original contrary to many other imitations, which emulate only the output signal, actually: The transistors, condensers, resistances and the other construction units as well as their specific peculiarities. Perfection in the smallest detail!

Thus also „the new " mono/Poly is “a genuine” original, whose sound offers the full range at warmth and pressure, like already the classical model.

In addition the mono/Poly of the similar to edition offers 2007 still another 128-stimmige Polyfonie and many new sound possibilities owing to two additional, independent MDE-X of effects, as well as four external sources of modulation. The Voice structure with 4 VCO' s, 1 VCF, 1 VCA, 2 EEC' s, 2 mg' s and altogether 256 Preset sounds does not leave desires open!

The new similar to edition 2007 contain beside the fire-new mono/Poly also the MS-20 and Polysix which are based on CMT technology, which represent a outstanding addition of the KORG Legacy Collection.

The new similar to edition 2007 like their other KORG counterparts the current Synchrosoft license technology, which Autorisationen can supplement existing KLC RTAS and KLC-DE registrations to already, needs.

KORG Legacy Collection - similar to edition 2007 is available for the following computer platforms:

Mac OS X (PowerPC /I ntelMac universal Binary), Windows XP

I am jumping on this one a bit late (DSL has been down) but here's another example of the Mono/Poly solo which I originally I posted last year. 5 minutes of noodling, me getting carried away with the arpeggiator and lots of modulation options, as it is so easy to do. That's a Stage Echo tape delay it's routed through.

"Excellent sounding and working example of Korg's Mono/Poly. This one was just cleaned internally, calibrated and has a fresh midi kit installed from ModPoly.

A true classic of the late pre-MIDI era, the Korg Mono/Poly is a four oscillator monster, which can be used in a variety of voice modes. The spec on paper for the Mono/Poly is pretty amazing: four oscillators, two LFOs, two ADSRs, poly, unison, and chord memory modes, arpeggiator, and the tremendous cross modulation and frequency modulation section. The sound is rich, detailed, and expressive.

Cosmetically the graphics and paint are sharp and clean with nothing out of the ordinary, wood sides show average wear and tear.

Serial no. 373495"

Korg Mono/Poly Vintage Analog Synthesizer w/MIDIPoly MIDI Kit SN 378305

"Very clean early 80's Korg Mono/Poly. It is in remarkable condition for its age with only a few minor marks/ indentations/ flaking vinyl on the sides, bottom edge, and front panel. There is no sun damage to the knobs as you normally see. The screws (except for a couple on the back of the synth) still have that original shine. The white Korg logo on the back is very clean and shiny. The front corners are not all chipped up as you normally see on these synths. For the most part it looks nearly brand new. Please see photos for details.

The synth is functioning as it should. All keys play the correct notes, all sliders function, all knobs work and aren't scratchy, the keyboard scaling and filter are correctly calibrated. Voltage is standard US voltage. There are no issues with the functionality of the synth.

The synth comes with the original manual, original patch sheets manual, and a rare overlay that I assume was used in stores to show the capabilities of the synth. I believe I also have the original box somewhere in a storage closet. I keep everything! If I have it, and I can find it, I'll include it in the auction but will ship it double-boxed to preserve the collector value of the synth.

A MIDIpolis MIDIpoly MIDI kit has been professionally installed in this Mono/Poly to allow it to be controlled externally using a MIDI sequencer or computer. The kit is completely reversible (no soldering) and all parts that were removed will be included in the supplied plastic case. I'm not sure why you would want to reverse the kit though. The MIDIpoly kit brings the Mono/Poly into the modern age and makes it a much more useful synth. All the original functions of the Mono/Poly are kept. The following functions are added:

- Key notes are sent and received as MIDI on the selected MIDI channel
- VCO's can be triggered individually by velocity
- Notes generated by the arpeggiator are also sent as MIDI
- Received Pitch Bend MIDI data alters pitch bend
- Received Modulation CC MIDI messages alter filter cutoff
- Received Portamento Time CC MIDI messages switch portamento on/off
- A new sample and hold modulation can be routed
- Keyboard action is significantly improved
- The EFFECTS button now does not reset the key assign mode to unison
- Arpeggio can be synced to MIDI clock (various clock settings)"

KORG MONOPOLY - HQ DEMO synthesizer 1981 Korg Mono Poly

KORG MONOPOLY Analog Synth DEMO | Mono Poly

YouTube Uploaded by AnalogAudio1 on Feb 7, 2010

"The Korg MonoPoly came out 1981 and was the last analogue monophonic synthesizer from Korg. Actually, the MonoPoly is a monophonic synth - but you can play it polyphonically, too - if necessary.

The Korg/Mono Poly is a very flexible synthesizer: It has 4 oscillators, oscillator sync, cross modulation, PWM, 24 dB Filter, 2 ADSR envelopes, 2 LFO's with many waveforms, ARPEGGIATOR, CHORD MEMORY and portamento.

It is built around SSM chips like the Korg Polysix. I think, with the MONOPOLY Korg wanted to produce a synth as an alternative to the Minimoog and Sequential Circuits Pro One.

The most characteristic thing on the MonoPoly is the arpeggiator, when it triggers the oscillators in poly-mode. Every step of the arpeggiator triggers a different oscillator - unique patterns can be produced.

The MonoPoly sounds great - it produces fat basses and leads - but also FX sounds, bells, like you can hear in the video.

I played the Korg MonoPoly sometimes with a Roland DEP-5 for delay effects and a Lexicon MPX-500 for reverbs."

"This fabulous Korg Mono/Poly has had MIDI In & Out ports professionally fitted!

The Mono/Poly is famous for its excellent arpeggiator, which has the ability to cycle through each of its 4 VCOs, creating weaving and evolving rhythms. With MIDI installed into this Mono/Poly, you can easily sync the arpeggiator to tempo, opening all sorts of possibilities. 😻

This Mono/Poly also has had an IEC (standard kettle cord) power supply fitted. (Most of the Mo/Pos you can get on ebay are spec'd for Japanese Voltage and require a step-down transformer to use in Australia and elsewhere)"
