Arturia Microfreak / Korg Volca Modular and Drum - Minijam 2019-11-24

Published on Nov 24, 2019 Oscillator Sink

"Recently I've been enjoying exploring the darker side of some of my synths and in this jam, the Microfreak along with the Volca Modular and Volca Drum are getting dark together.

The Volca Modular is providing a kind of groaning, grinding, industrial drone which is being enhanced by the Zoom MS-CDR70 and its excellent "Mangled Space" reverb algorithm (seriously, it's worth the price just for that). I'll post a photo of the patch on my Facebook page. The Volca Drum is providing various melodic and percussive elements - including a massive bass pulse; the Volca Drum is providing its own Delay via the Wave Guide with the "Tune" control set super low.

The Microfreak is set up as a king hybrid pad/pluck Karplus Strong kinda thing. The patch has an element of "controlled chaos" to it, and applying more pressure to the keys makes the patch get more frantic - almost like you're influencing another player rather than the instrument directly. It's an idea I've really been digging recently and it might form the basis for a patch pack...maybe...we'll see.

DUB Jam with UNO Drum Volca Bass and UNO Synth | haQ attaQ

Published on May 12, 2019 Jakob Haq

"Jamming some DUB music with UNO Drum and UNO Synth by IK Multimedia and a KORG volca bass. It’s all being recorded into my iPad inside AUM where I’m also using BLEASS Delay to dub out the volca bass.

▼ GEAR HOOKUP ▼
I’ve got the UNO Drum audio output daisy-chained through the UNO Synth. The UNO Synth output is being routed to the Novation AudioHUB (discontinued) Left channel (mono). The KORG volca bass audio output is routed to the AudioHUB right channel (mono). The AudioHUB is connected to the iPad Pro 12.9” (2015) with an Apple Lightning to USB3 adapter. I’m using bus channels in AUM to route audio from the UNO combo to their own reverb fx channel (EOS2). The KORG volca bass gets two buss channels, one for a reverb (EOS2) and the other for a delay (BLEASS Delay)."

Korg Volca Keys, Bass & Beats Demo - Musikmesse PMT Report 2013

Published on Apr 11, 2013
PMT Exclusive - Korg Volca Range Demonstration PMTVUK·30 videos

"At Frankfurt musikmesse 2013, PMT grabbed a first look at the new KORG
Volca range. We witnessed Boris from Korg Europe putting Volca through
its paces, and the results were excellent.

The rumour mill before the show was rife with talk of KORG releasing
further retro based vintage products that are packed with analog
technology. The range comprises of three separate models, we have the
Volca Bass, a unique three oscillator analog bass synthesizer, the
Volca Beats which is an analog drum machine featuring a comprehensive
16 step sequencer, Completing the lineup is the Volca Keys, a
straightforward yet effective polyphonic analog synthesizer which also
features a loop sequencer. The fun doesn't end there, each unit in the
Volca range has a MIDI input and sync jack making it easy to interface
with your favorite DAW.

Saturday Night Rhythm 03072021 - ArpOdyssey and Korg Volca Sample sequenced by Arturia KeyStep

video upload by J Rochefsky

"I am (was) thinking about selling my ArpOdyssey to make room for other synths - so wanted to capture the deep throaty voices it makes so effortlessly. At the same time, I was learning more about the KeyStep sequencer, and needed a bit of a beat - so I brought in the Korg Volca Sample (which is so nicely showing off my latest Volca Desktop Stand from HomeStudioStuff.com - oh and the KeyStep is also on a HomeStudioStuff.com stand). Learnings:
- The KeyStep needed to be set to the Korg Pulse clock type using Midi Control Center software to properly control the Volca
- The Arp Odyssey has a VCP slider on the bottom row that practically has the same effect as the VCF Frequency slider on the top row (at least in the configuration I used)
- The Volca Sample has some kick ass drum samples, but the combinations in the preset groups are not to my taste - had to make my own kit combination.
- The syncopated back beat you can get with the LFO on the Arp/Odyssey (or practically any synth I assume) is something that truly moves me...
- Logitech's LOGI capture software is pretty good, but might have some lag...
- my Yamaha MG10XU mixer is super easy to use and makes all the instruments work together nicely... took me about 6 months to start using it effectively mostly because I had a terrible desk setup until now (and it's still just mediocre at best).
If you like the stands used for the Arp/Odyssey, Arturia KeyStep and Korg Volca, you can find them here: https://homestudiostuff.com"

@MTC10 (10 minute track challenge) - BURGritty / KORG Volca + Roland TR-8

Published on Aug 9, 2014 ollilaboratories

"This is a video based on the facebook KORG volca group challenge https://www.facebook.com/groups/Volca/

This is the second upload, as the first video had some weird digital artefacts in the audio ... sounded like shit (pardon my language)

So idea of the challenge is, record a track live in less than 10 minutes where NOTHING is programmed in advance (of course, sequences can be recorded on the fly). Tag it @MTC10 (10 minute track challenge) and post it on the internetz....

I wanted to showcase the KORG volca, because ppl say it sounds like shit, and the filter is crap... i wanted to prove it the opposite.. and at the same time have no other instruments except the TR-8 drum machine.. so, this is what you get. :)

Signal path, KORG volca to strymon timeline, to jomox t-resonator, to TR-8 external in, to Kaoss pad = zoom Q4 to do video and audio! :)

No, rehearsals.. just select 110bpm, set the delay to match and press start!

Peace and BoOoM!"

BLEASS Jam - Motion FX demo w/ Korg Volca Drum and Roland TR-08

video by BLEASS

"Here's a jam using some of the BLEASS instruments and effects:

All of the Synths are made with the BLEASS Alpha Synthesizer (except for the theme melody) and all midi notes are sequenced with the BLEASS Groovebox.
Within AUM, which sends the midi sync out to the drum machines, all separate channels are processed through various BLEASS Effects:
The Roland TR-08 signal is split between low and higher frequency thanks to the motion EQ to add more punch
The Korg Volca Drum is processed through various Motion FX instances to add dynamic bitcrush / frequency shifting effects.
All stages use the BLEASS Compressor."

Frantic/pretty jam w/ Digitone, Volca Drum, Empress Multidrive, Lab, Ola, HX Stomp, Godin Stadium 59

Published on Jan 5, 2020 Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the possibilities of a new year. I picked up a Volca Drum over the holidays, and I'm astounded at how powerful it is for the price, from its independent sequencer lengths per track, accents, and "step jump" performance effect.

It's hard for me to start with drums, though, so I was stuck until a friend returned my Digitone, and then the song quickly came together. Kudos to Elektron for making multi-track gear that helps you construct songs quickly.

Kudos as well to the boutique pedal manufacturers out there. Strymon's Ola is beautiful, and my first choice whenever I need vibrato or chorus. Union Tube & Transistor is based out of my hometown, Vancouver, and their Lab compressor is gorgeous on drums (I only wish it were stereo, but maybe I just need to buy another).

And Steve from Empress was kind enough to send along my very first pieces of free gear (!). Here I put the Empress Multidrive to good use. I'm blown away by how the Multidrive can shape and mangle the drum sound but still maintain its clarity and bass.

Finally, I felt the song needed some guitar. The Godin Stadium '59 is the nicest guitar I have ever owned, from its sound to its feel. I can't recommend their guitars highly enough, if you play more than just synths.

Elektron Digitone — Four synth tracks (arp, melody, pad, bass)
Korg Volca Drum + Empress Multidrive + Union Tube & Transistor Lab + Strymon Ola — Drums
Godin Stadium '59 + Line 6 HX Stomp — Electric guitar

Written and performed within a 24-hour period, and uploaded as is, with only a little compression/limiting on the master.

Integrating & Syncing KORG Volcas with an iPad

More Volca Arps Published on Aug 13, 2014

"I learned some things from the last video. The most important was: how to get the Beats synced! The trick is that both Volcas have to be playing. In this case, the Volca Bass is getting its notes from the iPad arpeggiator, but to send the correct sync signal to the Beats, it needs to be playing. Won't this interfere with your live arp? Not if you clear out the sequence first (function + 16).

Boring details: Volca Bass is getting MIDI clock and notes from Yamaha Synth Arp & Drum Pad, running on the iPad 2. Volca Beats is taking its timing information from the Bass. Both channels of audio are also being processed by the iPad. The right channel, Bass, is going through AUFX:Dub for stereo delay. The left channel, Beats, is going through Audio Mastering for stereo widening and a bit of equalizing (which you can see during the performance; I'm lifting the snare a bit). The Novation Bass Station II on the right is a delicious analogue synth, but this morning I'm just using it as a MIDI controller for the Yamaha app. Audio is coming into the iPad via a Behringer UCA222. The iPad's MIDI interface is the Xmidi Tab from E-mu. (This is a nice USB/MIDI interface, by the way: unlike the super-cheap ones, it doesn't introduce noise into your audio signal.) It and the Behringer audio interface are both plugged into a powered USB hub, which is what you see plugged into the iPad via the Camera Connection Kit (CCK). The whole thing is being filmed with an iPod Touch, which is getting its audio from a similar Behringer unit.

One more technical note: the Volca Bass has three oscillators, but I'm using just one of them here. Less isn't always more, but it can be refreshing, and there's something sinewy about the single osc that brings it closer to the Roland sound that the two Volca cases are obviously hoping to remind you of."

Volcas and StepPolyArp: Proof of Concept

Published on Aug 12, 2014 David Wilson-Okamura

"This is a proof of concept, not a finished song. There are three main components: an iPad 2 running Laurent Colson's marvelous arpeggiator app StepPolyArp, a Korg Volca Beats (for drums), and a Korg Volca Bass, which is getting notes from the arpeggiator."

Electrodark on Korg Volca Boxes + Kaossilator 2 + Arturia Microbrute

Published on Mar 5, 2014 PanzerLyu·13 videos

"Another obscure dance song to test the entire Korg Volca series,
plus Korg Kaossilator 2 for the main rhythm drum, and Arturia Microbrute for a second bass line.
I tried to create the sound of a guitar with Korg Volca Keys (first pattern), using the LFO, cutoff and a little delay.

As I played it live without any reharsal, a problem emerged:
Korg Kaossilator 2 ,not midi sync at all, went off beat in the first part , so I had to stop it for a moment,
and then restart it in time with Korg Volca Beats.
I'm not really satisfied about the execution, but I like the groove of the song.
Probably I'll keep it to develope it for my band.

As usual, no daw, no overdubbing

If you like it, please leave a comment!"

Live Synth Jam 43:Korg Volca, Roland Boutique, Renoise

Published on Jun 9, 2016 Todd Smith

"The Roland Boutique JP-08 arrives !! This jam uses the tracker based sequencer, Renoise. I've been ripping my studio apart left and right trying to find the best setup for me and Renoise. In this quickie I only use the Korg Volca Bass, Roland Boutique JU-06 and Roland Boutique JP-08. Renoise supplies the drum samples and all the sequencing. Renoise is slaved to Ableton via Rewire, Ableton handles the multi track recording. I kept most of the gear out because I wanted to focus on the Roland Boutique sounds. The Korg Volca Bass Supplies the bass. The Roland Boutique JU-06 takes on the lead synthesizer sequence and the Roland Boutique JP-08 handles the pad In this jam my max loop with Renoise is 128 steps. I plan on controlling the drum mutes in future jams but with this one I just laid everything like one big track and played live over it. After this jam I have a very good idea how my final setup will be with Renoise. Thank you for watching, please subscribe.
