Oberheim TEO-5 vs OB-6 vs OB-X8 // which synth is BEST?

video upload by Miles Away

"Shootout / comparison of the three high end analog synthesizers from Oberheim / Sequential. Which should you get?

All 3 synths were recorded direct into UAD Apollo 16 interface with no EQ or pre-amp coloring. While I did my best to level match all 3 of the synths, these are analog instruments with a high variance in dymanic range, so at some points, one synth will sound louder than others. For example, the OB-6 sometimes sounds louder than the others, because of its inherently hotter levels driving into its internal mixer, despite reading similar levels on the meter. It's a fine balance to get the levels close, without overcompressing the master audio file, so I went for as transparent of a recording as possible, so keep that in mind if you have issues with level matching.

Oberheim OB-X8 Sound design Tutorial on Andromeda A6

video upload by synthlegends

"As you might know I recently did a comparison video on the SEM Filter Section from the OB-X8 vs the A6. Thanks to some comments e. g. relateted of Mono vs Stereo on the OB-X8 I tried the basic sound again and tried to improve it. Here are my results an my tipps for sound design, if you have an A6 allready in your studio and don't can't or want afford the OB-X8.

The Alesis Andromeda A 6 has 16 Voices, 2 VCO plus 2 Sub-VCO, 4 LFO, 3 Envelopes and extremely wide modulation options. It consists of two Filter Sections, the Moog Ladder Filter from early Moogs and the SEM Filter from Oberheim (12 dB LO, HP, BP and Notch plus state variable). Also both filter can be mixed. In the envelope section you can choose different shapes and combine them to get a very close analog feeling of typical envelope designs of the 70/80 ies. Plus you can randomize panning by S/H or LFO. I show you some tricks how to get the great and unbelievably silky sound of the OB-X8 quite close."

Oberheim Matrix 1000 vs OB-X8 // A Vintage Gem that deserves a closer look

video upload by Starsky Carr

"The Oberheim OB-X8 is an incredible sounding all-in-one OBX, OBSX, OB8 and OB-Xa but that comes with a considerable price tag. The Matrix 1000 is a true Oberheim (albeit with different innards) that's been a staple in studios for 3 decades. There's an amazingly flexible, warm sounding, fat little synth hiding in this little box. Putting it in a modern context vs the latest release from Oberheim tells an interesting story.

It always was a budget version of that Oberheim sound coming in at lower cost that the Matrix 6 or the Matrix 6R but how does it stack up in 2022. There are plenty of editors, and firmware to help it overcome some of its tweaking shortcomings.

Here's a demo of how it sounds compared to the fabulous OB-X8 and how I've been using it - which editors I found most useful etc.

All-in-all I've very impressed by it, a forgotten gem from the 90s that deserves a closer look!"
