Deckard's Dream Sound Design With Paul Schilling

Published on Sep 12, 2018 Synthtopia

"At Knobcon 2018, synthesist Paul Schilling was demonstrating some of the sound design work he's done on the Deckard's Dream synthesizer - an analog synth that's inspired by the Yamaha CS-80 and its use by Vangelis on the Blade Runner soundtrack."

And a video from Paul himself:

Knobcon 2018: Deckard's Dream With Paul Schilling

Published on Sep 15, 2018 sonicstate

"Obviously you always want to hear more of this synthesizer right? At Knobcon this year we were able to grab some demo patches from Paul Schilling (Schilling Sound Emporium) who was showing off his work on the Deckard's Dream Synth. In the demo Paul used the Kurzweil MIDI keyboard (for its polyphonic after touch) and the Linnstrument."

Kijimi Recreation of Polykobol II Demo by Paul Schilling

"There are very few demos of the legendary and rare Polykobol II. To me the best ones are by Sebastien Moumon, on YouTube. I decided to try to recreate (as accurately as possible) the first 2.5 minutes of this demo, my favorite one: [embedded below]

I wanted to see how close I could get with the Kijimi. Sebastien used quite a bit of reverb and delay on this demo, and I tried to recreate those as accurately as possible too."

Original Yamaha CS-80 Presets for Deckard's Dream

Deckard's Dream Demos by Paul Schilling

"Each of the original 22 CS-80 patches went through several revisions over the last few months to get them as close as possible. Included are all the various CS-80 preset combinations - a total of around 120 Deckard's Dream patches, each of them tweaked for optimal balance.

In the style of Vangelis, since he is the perennial master of CS-80 presets. I'll be adding on to this as time allows"

Polyfusion Modular System at Knobcon

via Paul Schilling‎

"I was at Knobcon on Saturday...it could have been an elaborate dream but there was a Polyfusion booth, with a beautiful Polyfusion modular, and a very nice man told me reassuringly that they were bringing all of the modules back. They were even working on a poly synth using the same circuitry. Did anyone else have the same dream?"

According to the people bringing back the Polyfusion:

"The machine at the show is new old stock. Although we look young, we are working with and have exclusive license with Polyfusion in NY. Please get all the facts before spreading misinformation!!! We worked very hard to have this opportunity.

Polyfusion will be manufacturing the modules so they will be coming straight from them."

Fun with CS-80 / GX-1 style string ensemble on Deckard's Dream

Published on Feb 27, 2019 Paul Schilling

"A walkthrough of my recreation of Stevie Wonder's "Village Ghetto Land" GX-1 string ensemble on the Deckard's Dream synth, with plenty of audio examples.

The Deckard goes beyond what the CS-80 can do, for example by offering PWM LFO sync across all voices and layers, which very few synths actually offer, and which adds a vibrant airy ensemble-type feel. Also the Deckard lets you reverse the polarity of the high-pass filter envelopes, which was also a feature of the GX-1 (so that either the HP filter opens/closes together with the LP, or goes the opposite way)."

Sequential Prophet-5 rev4 various sounds, filter & vintage knob demos

Paul Schilling

"A run-through of patches I created for the Prophet-5 rev4. Some of these were included in the factory set. I focused a lot on the rev2 SSM-based filters. In several of the patch demos I do some tweaking, for example to show the difference the Vintage knob makes, and to show the quality of the filter with low or high resonance.

No processing except a touch of reverb. Because some seem to prefer dry demos I included a few patches at the beginning with no reverb, and also all patches after 13:50 have no reverb."

Sequential Trigon-6 Filter/Oscillator Drone Demo

video upload by Paul Schilling

"I enjoyed spending some quality time with this instrument. My intention in this vid is to focus on the sound character of the Trigon-6 oscillators and filter (both 4- and 2-pole), with different oscillator volume settings and filter cutoff/resonance settings.

After each change (osc volume or filter resonance), I adjust the track volume in order to keep the overall level somewhat consistent.

Since this is a sound design unit it doesn't have the production knobs, which are much nicer! :)"
