Meet Ziggy, the new desktop instrument from Buchla!

video upload by Buchla

"Meet the Buchla Ziggy - a new instrument formed around the famous Buchla “complex oscillator.” With a new, “unpatched” instrument experience, Ziggy offers quick, gestural means of assigning modulation and composing music. Ziggy incorporates many of the Buchla innovations that have long been taken for granted: digital control over the analog audio, additive synthesis, unique and musical interactions, and the focus on making an “instrument” rather than a “synthesizer.”

What is Ziggy?

The Buchla Ziggy is a new instrument formed around the famous Buchla “complex oscillator.” With a new, “unpatched” instrument experience, Ziggy offers quick, gestural means of assigning modulation and composing music. Ziggy incorporates many of the Buchla innovations that have long been taken for granted: digital control over the analog audio, additive synthesis, unique and musical interactions, and the focus on making an “instrument” rather than a “synthesizer.” Ziggy modernizes and simplifies a familiar Buchla tradition: composing music in a style of synthesis often associated with the western coast of America. Like any musical instrument, it can be played on its own, crafting sequences and sounds from its unique arrangement of controls. It pairs very nicely with a portable keyboard like the Buchla LEM218, but It also plays with a large range of third-party devices and DAWs through MIDI, USB, and 1v/octave CV.

There are a number of unique ways to shape your sounds internally and externally. The Cycler is an original modulation source that acts like the combination of a clock, envelope generator, LFO and random generator. With it, you can modulate pitch and timbre and/or trigger the gate envelopes. Other modulation sources include an “extra” slow LFO and external MIDI control. Rather than using cumbersome patchcords, modulation is assigned with switch selection and dialed in with the encoder or its own associated sliders. The modulation oscillator acts as the primary modulation source at low frequency or audio rates to modulate the Complex Oscillator with AM or FM modulation, and is often blended as a second sound source. The Envelope for the Low Pass Gate (a combination amplifier/filter) can be shaped by selecting common envelopes and manipulated in time and amount, rather than attack, decay, sustain, release.

Creatively, it is easy to quickly make music and design sounds with Ziggy. Assigning modulation to different parameters is made with simple gestures of holding buttons and moving sliders. Surprise is certain, with a source of “uncertainty” available for the Cycler’s attributes. Sounds are easily saved with the simple preset system. Glowing LEDs indicate assignments and modulations. Its unique analog sounds are sure to delight and entertain. Special chaotic modulators can be accessed from the menus, driving the sounds in unusual ways. Scales and alternate tunings expand your musical universe while pitch sliders can be quantized to scales to make them melodically playable

Musically, Ziggy is versatile. With two analog oscillators, multiple modulators, a variety of tunings, envelopes, and wavefolding and shaping, there’s a variety of sounds to be made. While Buchla is often associated with the purely experimental, there’s strange strings, wonderful drums, exotic leads, plucky percussions, and deeply felt basses that can be synthesized from Ziggy.

Practically, Ziggy fits well in a small studio. The patchcord-free design, simple USB-C power, and comprehensive MIDI control makes it easy to add to your kit; its handsome, durable enclosure of oak and steel with classic Buchla style makes it belong. Configure the device through its simple menus or using a web browser and the web app.

Ziggy is a desktop Buchla that has all the flexibility of a modular with no patching required – Demo

video upload by MusicRadar Tech

"Buchla’s Ziggy monosynth aims to bring the brand’s singular style of West Coast synthesis to a wider audience, both by dropping the price – at $999, Ziggy is a fifth of the price of the company’s Music Easel – and repackaging the sound engine in a non-modular, self-contained desktop instrument that’s intended to be more modern and accessible than its previous designs.

The format may have changed, but Ziggy still has the digitally-controlled analogue architecture of a classic Buchla: a complex oscillator with wavefolding, a modulation oscillator for FM and AM, and a low-pass gate in place of a conventional filter and VCA, inviting the kind of unconventional sound design that has earned the brand a place in the hearts of those looking for an experimental alternative to the traditional East Coast approach. What makes Ziggy different, though, are additions like browser-managed patch storage, digital effects, and extensive connectivity: alongside CV inputs for pitch, gate and modulation, you get an external audio input and 5-pin MIDI and USB-C connections, which allow for the kind of external control via the KeyStep that you can see here.

It’s fair to say that most music-makers won’t have had the chance to experiment with a Buchla before, and with Ziggy, the company is hoping to change that. While it’s clearly more approachable than a Music Easel or a Skylab, designing sounds with Ziggy will still take some getting used to, as we found out over at Buchla’s booth – but cycling through the instrument’s presets, which showcase the unique, often chaotic timbres that West Coast synthesis is known for, left us eager to dive deeper into the Buchla universe. Mission accomplished."

BUCHLA Ziggy Sound DEMO & Walkthrough — Superbooth 2026

video upload by Hispasonic

"At Superbooth 2026, Buchla unveils Ziggy: their most portable and accessible analog desktop synthesizer to date. Filmed at the Buchla booth in Berlin, this video walks through the instrument's main features and includes a full sound demo.

Ziggy distills the DNA of classic Buchla instruments into a compact, immediately playable format: complex oscillator, modulation oscillator, Cycler (envelope + pulser, à la 208c), lowpass gate and a stereo digital effects section with a brand-new ping pong delay. All modulation routing — normally done with patch cables on a Buchla — is handled through flexible assignments from the panel and the oscilloscope screen.

KEY FEATURES
Fully analog signal path + digital stereo effects True analog bypass (voltage divider) when dry is at zero "Programs" designed as a starting point, not as closed presets Fader quantization to scales (pentatonic minor, etc.) Oscilloscope screen doubles as the programming and mod-assignment display

CONNECTIVITY
USB-C (power + MIDI) plus a second USB-C dedicated to power 3.5 mm TRS Type A MIDI and 5-pin DIN MIDI
Eurorack patch points: gate, modulation, pressure and 1V/oct
Aux audio input and stereo outputs

Superbooth 2026 Highlights | Voltage Labs

video upload by Voltage Labs

"This year at Superbooth, we found some seriously inspiring instruments - here are a few of our highlights. Soma showed one of the most forward-thinking instruments we came across, with a truly unique interface. Richie Hawtin and Erica Synths introduced the latest Bullfrog edition: Drums.
Buchla also caught our attention with Ziggy a compact new take on their iconic West Coast sound.
Polyend is aiming high with their new analog-digital hybrid drum machine, possibly their most ambitious project yet. And one of the most fascinating discoveries for us was Tembo: a wooden drum synthesizer that looks beautiful and sounds unlike anything else.

Interesting bits and pieces:

02:00 Soma Enigma
03:00 Superbooth & Schwarzmann (Live)
04:00 Erica Synth x Richie Hawtin´s Bullfrog

LŪP - custom tape looper and phase pattern generator

Lomond Ziggy Campbell

"LŪP came about when I was commissioned to build a custom tape-looper instrument for a musician called King Creosote. I wanted the machine to embody the compositional ideas of the two esteemed New York avant-garde composers, William Basinski and Steve Reich. It plays 12 second tape loops which ‘disintegrate’ over time as the tape passes near to a rotating magnetic disc. This rotating disc also provides a clock and drives two eccentric cams which sends out ever-shifting phase patterns. You can hook the machine up to a modular synthesiser and process the disintegrating tape loops while generating Reichian phase shifting patterns. I made an album doing just that which will be available on 4th Dec from Bandcamp."
