Techno Beat Production: Honeysmack How I Make Improvised Acid Techno

video upload by Honeysmack

"This video was made for beat production students at The State University of New York (SUNY Broome County) back in October 2021 during the pandemic. It was recorded in my old studio before it was redesigned in early 2022. Here I discuss my overall approach and philosophy to making and performing live improvised techno. Performing with my "studio instrument" is at the core of what I do as live techno improvisor. There are excerpts from live performances throughout the video, with detailed explanations. This channel is supported by my Patreons, become a member here: https://www.patreon.com/honeysmack and yes I also offer one-on-one tuition/lesson/coaching on making and performing live techno.

Acid Techno Modular Synth Jam with TR-909 and DFAM - Unpatching or How I Patch

video upload by Honeysmack

Timeline below.

"In this video I "unpatch" a little Acid Techno modular rack I've been rocking for a few months. Truth is, I didn't really unpatch, more of a "how I patch" — I walk through and explain how I use modules and their sound/function. This channel is supported by my Patreons, become a member here: https://www.patreon.com/honeysmack

๐ŸŽ› Focused modular voices ๐ŸŽ›
๐Ÿ”ธ Cwejman BLD2 making the 303ish sound
๐Ÿ”ธ Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas Alter - mad percussion sounds
๐Ÿ”ธ Noise Engineering Loquelic Iteritas - lead, bass or rip your head off!
๐Ÿ”ธMichigan Synth Works SY0.5 - Pearl Syncussion clone, analog percussion secret weapon.
๐Ÿ”ธEndorphines Queen of Pentacles - 909 inspired multi-drum voice module with effects.
๐Ÿ”ธMoog DFAM - killer percussion and synth module with onboard 8-step sequencer.

Merely scratching the surface in this video. So strap in and grab a nice coffee or tea. It gets a little long, so perhaps my next unpatching video will dive deeper how I specifically use certain modules. Please feel free to ask!

๐Ÿ•น The jam I unpatch is available here, with no talking, straight up jam: [posted here]

My modular gear and set-up is in a constant state of flux and I change up my rack every 3 months, thereabouts. That is the beauty of modular synths, you design your own synth. There are no, right or wrong ways to do this, it is all very subjective. Hence, you get an insight to my way of thinking about how I make Techno."

00:00 Intro to the gear, my improvisational approach and sequences
02:04 Audio and MIDI routings
04:09 Module overview
08:21 Intellijel Metropolis - and how I'm not a traditionally trained musician.
12:04 BLD2 focus, that's Bass -Lead & Drum Generator to earth people.
13:54 Add that 909 and jamming
15:05 Basimilus Iteritas Alter - hard to pronounce, best percussion all-rounder
18:10 Loquelic Iteritas - a tale of 2 pitches
22:52 Continue the jam, that's what we came for
24:37 Cockpit2 - mixer module with that sweet side-chain pump
27:33 SY0.5 and Queen of Pentacles, serious percussion investments, shhhhhh don't tell everyone
32:15 Queen of Pentacles, the Queen is very much alive
35:29 I do like to jam, no seriously, I do ask anyone who doesn't know me
36:06 Drummer from another mother or DFAM to you and me!
37:37 Please add 909 to that DFAM, thanks maaaaaaate
39:13 Versio - reverb from the versatile vampire

Cognition 303: Bassline Deviations by Various Artists Celebrating the 40-Year History of the TB-303

Also on https://www.clananalogue.org/ where you'll find the release on other platforms including Spotify, Deezer, and Apple Music. Note this release features supporting members of the site!

"Cognition 303: Bassline Deviations celebrates the 40-year history of the TB-303, its status as the last great iconic instrument of electronic music, and explorations of its newest sonic manifestations. The TB-303 has become one of the most used, modified and cloned instruments in electronic music. For Cognition 303 Clan Analogue artists from across Australia heeded the call to create a new selection of sounds exploring all versions of this instrument and its expanding musical lineage.

The Roland TB-303 Bass Line machine was a discarded device of the 1980s, forgotten as shiny digital synths became the industry standard of polished pop and stadium rock. However a new generation in the late 80s and early 90s reclaimed these analogue relics from pawn shops and Trading Post adverts, inspired by the new sounds of techno, house and electronic experimentalism. These young artists became the flagbearers for new musical movements which swept through the 1990s. From this era Clan Analogue was born, Australia’s longest-running and most influential electronic music collective, now celebrating 30 years of underground electronic music activity.

Cognition 303 spans the styles associated with the TB-303 and pushes them into new and unexpected directions. Techno superstar Honeysmack collaborates with T-Rek for one of his famed acid techno bangers. Australian dance music pioneer Andy Rantzen teams up with fellow 303 lover Ryan Spinoglio to give us a stripped-back funk exploration using four TB-303s. Composite Cone and Klaps celebrate the famed Robin Whittle 303 Devilfish modification. Vision Four 5 produce an anthemic piece of stadium techno while KOshowKO channels the legendary Charanjit Singh by blending the 303 with non-Western instruments. Suspect and Factorypreset, two halves of the seminal Dark Network, each create a piece of hypnotic ambient acid house groove - just some of the squelchy masterpieces on Cognition 303.

Download Cognition 303 from Bandcamp for a bonus collection of 14 more Australian 303 tracks from Clan Analogue’s artists, including Bleepin' J Squawkins, Ming One and dyLAB.

Modular Acid Techno Jam with TR-909 for upcoming Unpatching Modular Synth Rack Performance

video upload by Honeysmack

"Hello friends, I'm now on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/honeysmack This jam is the precursor to my unpatching acid techno modular rack, where Patreon supporters get to see the preview! In my next video I will do the opposite of patching from scratch, instead I will unpatch this little performance - now you've seen the jam, next I'll unpack this performance and modular rack and explain how it was created.

This is the rack I've been using recently for my recent live shows, I thought it might be interesting to unravel how I put this rack together as it evolved over the last few months. And like every modular rack it will come to an end and I will move onto another rack with the amazing Cwejman SM-1 - but that's a video for another time ๐Ÿ˜… There'll be some previews of the SM-1 on Patreon very soon.

If you want to know how I make and perform techno and would like to hang out or get some personalised tuition - directly from my studio, whether you're starting your techno making journey or you've been making bangers for some time, then take a look at my Patreon page for more details. ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐ŸŽ› Gear used in this video:
Intellijel performance case, check the rack details on ModularGrid:
https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/v...
*Roland TR-909 - kick, hi hat and rides [off camera]
*Playdifferently Model 1 mixer [off camera]
*Elektron Analog Heat [off camera]
gear that is off camera for this video will be revealed and discussed in the following unpatching video!

All improvised and recorded in a single unedited take."

Arturia MiniFreak vs Roland TR-909 first play: techno workout examples

video upload by Honeysmack

"First play with the Arturia MiniFreak hybrid synth. I'm not much of a keyboard player and was immediately drawn to the sequencer on the MiniFreak. In this video I paired the synth with a TR-909 and went through a bunch of sounds, manipulating and jamming at the same time, nothing too serious, just getting a feel for it and how it sounds. There's quite a broad palette of sounds in this synth, with a stack of features I didn’t touch - this video barely scratches the surface. There is no additional sounds or effects, everything you hear is from the MiniFreak and TR-909.

00:00 Banger spec - From Detroit to Berlin to Melbourne.
01:20 Did you know flowers can grow better with techno music?
02:26 Future techno club banger, tell your children now and they will love you.
03:57 Noisey percussion is so 1990s although I was never a fan of "Friends" the TV Show.
04:45 What happens when you add a box of hammers and some old shoes to your washing machine?
05:38 The rave doesn't end when you go to bed, it just gets more wobbly when you're horizontal.
06:46 Corporate IDM for people who need really interesting electronic music at the office to annoy co-workers.
07:57 My best Drexciya impersonation, underwater is the new world.
09:45 The microwave is talking to you, this is not a trip.
10:31 Glam rock and techno finally merge now we can dance on the moon.
12:15 Sometimes the cheese you bite into is not all that pleasant.

Introducing drumlogue, the first hybrid drum machine from Korg

video upload by Korg

Update: two new user videos by Honeysmack and Marcus Schmahl added below.

"Combining the rich power of analog with the flexibility of digital, drumlogue provides the ultimate analog sound for your beats.

Featuring newly developed analog circuitry, drumlogue builds a solid foundation for your track; it also helps you stand out with an elevated harmonic richness and thick low end.

Important parameters for each part have dedicated controls on the front panel for quick and intuitive changes – without diving into menus. For even more creative potential, each part has a wealth of further parameters accessible through a powerful onboard editing suite. Even mixing is simple, with dedicated volume controls for the analogue and digital parts.

The track you hear in this video is by Dean Forrest"

New Korg Hybrid Drum Machine Drumlogue - Honeysmack's first encounter video upload by Honeysmack

"Get ready for a super nerd session, no talking just me tinkering with the Korg drumlogue for the very first time. Korg Australia were kind enough to give me a play with a sneak preview pre-production model of the drumlogue. Unfortunately I had no manual at the time, so please excuse me in advance. Hopefully this video provides some context to its sound. I feel this will be a winner for Korg, well done! Great sound, neat size, this could be a monster of a machine.

All the sounds and effects in this video are from the drumlogue, there are no external sounds or effects. Simple stereo output from the drum machine. No other drum machines were hurt in the making of this video.

0:00 Does this suit me? Oh what does this do?
2:23 Omph omph omph, ah I see, me likey the kick drum
5:59 Electro ratchets - why not take your time and build a track

A paradigm shift in drum machines.

drumlogue marks a paradigm shift in drum machines. It offers the raw power and rich sounds of Analog, the flexibility of Digital voices, and drumlogue’s SDK for fully customizable User Custom Synthesizers.

On top of that, its heavy-duty, dynamic sequencer, customizable effects, and intuitive controls will make drumlogue a must-have in your studio to create music for any genre or style.

It’s time to take your beats and entire musical process to a whole new creative level with incredible sounds, effects, customization, and sequencing. Let drumlogue support your craft on your musical journey!

Raw Analog Power

drumlogue was conceived to provide the ultimate analog sound for your beats, and delivers fantastically; featuring completely newly developed analog circuits by legendary Korg analog synth team engineer Junichi Ikeuchi (ARP 2600 M, MS-20 mini, ARP Odyssey…) , the depth and richness of its sound is on a whole new level.

These new analog circuits - (Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Low Tom and High Tom) - will not just provide a solid foundation for your track, but make it stand out with an elevated harmonic richness and a thick low end.

Blending simplicity and ease of use, the most important controls for each of these parts have dedicated knobs on the front panel that can be tweaked at any time without any menu diving necessary, so you can quickly and intuitively fine tune your sound on the fly.
For further sound exploration, each part provides many more parameters accessible through the powerful onboard sound editing system.

Last but not least, each part on drumlogue - analog or digital - has a dedicated volume knob that will make your mixing process incredibly smooth and easy.

Digital Flexibility

As the perfect partner for its analog section, drumlogue provides 7 digital parts; 6 sample based and 1 synthesis based (Multi-Engine). The sample based parts can play any of the preloaded PCM banks on drumlogue. You can also import your own User Samples to its memory, making drumlogue an extremely versatile machine with virtually limitless sonic possibilities.

To start with, the 64 preloaded drum kits of drumlogue will provide you with a wide variety of sounds spanning several genres so you can easily kick-start your tracks.

For additional sounds, samples can easily be easily loaded into the drumlogue just by connecting your drumlogue to your computer via USB and simply drag-dropping your samples onto the main memory.

Multi-Engine and logue SDK

The popular Multi Engine from prologue and minilogue xd is now more powerful than ever. In addition to the Variable Phase Modulation (VPM) and Noise generator engines, the Multi Engine features a new User Custom slot that can play full-fledged synth voices that provide vast sonic possibilities, never before heard on a drum machine.

Custom Synths

drumlogue’s synth voices are not simply static waveforms. Custom synths can be built to not only generate sound, even implementing built in filters, LFOs, MIDI controlled polyphony or other parameters is now possible The only restriction for third party developers is their creativity (and CPU usage!), giving you unbound sound exploration.

Exclusive Sinevibes Synth Plugin “Nano”

Korg has collaborated with popular logueSDK plugin developer “Sinevibes” to include a brand new synth plugin “Nano” as a factory preset on drumlogue. This exclusive plugin explores the power behind the expanded Multi Engine and will give all drumlogue users a taste of this new platform.

“Nano” is a full-fledged virtual analog synth with a wide array of features and plenty of customizable parameters. The synth engine has dual oscillators with optional ring modulation, a 4-pole state-variable filter with soft clipping distortion, built-in EG and built-in multi-waveform LFO.

Leads, basses, percussive sounds or cinematic effects, you decide how to use this incredible sonic potential!

A True Sequencing Powerhouse

drumlogue harnesses all of its sonic power to an extremely powerful internal sequencer that is flexible and easy to use.

Tired of the same old beats? drumlogue's heavy duty 64 step sequencer makes it easy and intuitive to create complex rhythm patterns and polyrhythms that elevate your music creation process with innovative features such as per-step probability, per-step alternate trigger patterns, per-step micro offsets, per-track groove patterns and much more.

Thanks to its clear OLED display, it is also very easy to visually follow and edit your sequences.

drumlogue is both great in the studio and playing live. With its Chain mode, creating long and interesting patterns is straightforward and clearly displayed. In Loop mode you can switch between several variations to play your sequence in new and interesting ways. The Motion and Accent recording functions are intuitive and fast and if you want to try new things on your track, the Randomization function is there to help you. These functions and many more on the drumlogue will support and spice up your live performances!

Effects and customization

drumlogue includes several high-quality effects across three categories that can be used simultaneously: Delay, Reverb and Master effects.

The send amounts for delay and reverb effects can be set independently for each part, and multiple return points are available.
The master effects allow you to add that final polish to your sound and bring it all together. Master effects can be bypassed on a per-part basis, making it possible to send the effect to specific audio parts. A sidechain bus is also available to master effects which can make use of it.

New Module8 Print Magazine

This one is in via Corey who had the following to say about it (note you might recogize a few names featured here on MATRIXSYNTH):

"Hi, just reaching out to let you know about a new synth magazine from Australia called Modul8.

Featuring local and international artists, Modul8 is devoted to showcasing artists who are extending what electronic music means.

The premiere issue features interviews with Detroit / Berlin based Dub Monitor, YouTube synth philosopher JAde Wii, regional Victoria’s best Pure Data wrangler Nicky Systems, lofi lover Kozeps and Melbourne’s Make It Up Club legend Stevie Richards.

Modul8 # 1 also has contributions from analogue stalwart Todd Barton, Paleman and Melbourne’s undisputed 303 champion, Honeysmack.

All up its 56 pages of utter synth geekery from around the world, and it's only available via good old fashioned printed paper.

The magazine was born during Victoria’s covid lockdown, when co-founders Phil Coyle and Corey Hague were looking for inspiration beyond the endless scroll of nosy algorithms.

“We just wanted something that felt a bit deeper than social media. We both remembered how important and influential magazines had been on us, so we decided to try and make something that lasted longer than a swipe,” co-founder Phil Coyle says.

In keeping with the theme of ‘real life’, a launch event was held at Found Sound, featuring artists profiled in the magazine. That video can be seen here:"

Modul8 Magazine - launch party at Found Sound video upload by Modul8 Media

"To kick off Modul8 Issue # 1 we had some of the awesome people featured in the magazine come and play!

It was a great day with lots of new connections made, and we can't wait for the next one!

Super special thanks to Found Sound, the artists who filled the room with music and the legends who came out to support the launch."

First Month with Soma Pulsar-23: compilation of improvised pieces

video upload by Honeysmack

"An assortment of 7 short improvised clips with the Soma Pulsar-23, all very techno, all with different configurations of gear. There's lot's to be said about the Pulsar-23, it is one of the most expressive machines I've come across in recent times. There is always something new to explore each time I turn it on. As an improvisational tool, this is amazing. Okay I'll stop gushing, you get my point. Vlad Kreimer is a genius and I put him in the same company as Don Buchla, Bob Moog, Roger Linn, Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim.

Each clip is recorded in a single take, with no editing or post production. I used a variety of clock sources and sequencers as indicated below. Some sections get rather crunchy and distorted, sorry! Pulsar23 runs into a Playdifferently Model1 mixer, that runs through an Elektron Analog Heat as the master bus.

00:00 Clip1 - Using internal clock source and looper-recorders, exploring kick and modulating effects.
02:10 Clip2 - Quadrantid Swarm audio running through the Pulsar23 and also modulated by the Pulsar. Beat Step Pro is the main sequencer.
03:52 Clip3 - Funky Techno with Beat Step Pro sequencing the Pulsar via MIDI.
06:21 Clip4 - Harder Techno jam with Beat Step Pro sequencing the Pulsar via MIDI.
07:08 Clip5 - TB-303 running through the Pulsar effects and filters.
10:04 Clip6 - Integrating with a Eurorack rack, using a combination of clock sources and Pulsar's looper-recorders. Crunchy and noisey!
10:56 Clip7 - Straight up Techno jam!

Gear featured in these clips:
