New iPad Synth from Waldorf and TempoRubato In the Works?
'Waldorf and Rolf Wöhrmann design pioneering new iPad synthesizer
A long tradition of wavetable synthesis – from first PPG synthesizers to the latest developments in terms of Blofeld and Largo – and Rolf Wöhrmann’s (TempoRubatos) vast experience with the iPad synthesis made it only natural to come up with a wavetable concept for the iPad, which, as a mobile platform, is becoming increasingly more significant to professional and semi-professional musicians and producers.
Thanks to intelligent gesture recognition and plenty of available graphic performance the iPad is perfect for bringing wavetable synthesis to a new level. For the first time it will be possible to plunge into the depths of wavetables and to make their sound content visible with advanced 3-D technology.
The cooperation between Waldorf and TempoRubato, also known for their product line NLog Synth, doesn’t stop here: The application will also offer new possibilities for sound manipulation based on Waldorf’s very latest spectral research.
Completely new and unheard sounds
An innovative approach to wavetable synthesis allows for the transposition of the spectrum and the balance of periodic and sound spectra entirely independent from a wave’s position. The existing wavetable technology is thereby extended by two new dimensions, and it allows for formant shifts as well as numerous other unheard sounds. Also, unlike with typical wavetable instruments, the number and length of waves in a wavetable will no longer be restricted. It’s the era of wavetable synthesis V2.0!
This app will support a huge number of hardware MIDI interfaces, e. g. all Core MIDI compatible interfaces by IK Multimedia, iConnectMIDI, MIDI Mobilizer II by Line6, ioDock or the Camera Connection Kit by Apple, as well as proprietary interfaces such as the SynthStation by Akai.
App collaboration standards like Sonoma‘s Audio Copy/Paste, Intua‘s Audio Pasteboard and Virtual Core MIDI will also be supported like the upcoming AudioBus standard and KORG’s WIST synchronization technology.
Joachim Flor, executive manager at Waldorf Music GmbH is pleased: 'We are truly excited about our collaboration with Rolf Wöhrmann from TempoRubato. Considering his great experience with the iPad synthesis we are planning to release this excellent synthesiser this summer. Then it will be available at the Apple App Store. It’s going to be an exciting time!'
Rolf Wöhrmann is also looking forward to the challenge: 'The cooperation with Waldorf Music and the Waldorf developers is a great honour. Waldorf‘s long history in wave table synthesis and the new and innovative possibilities of the iPad will create an astonishing synthesizer for musicians, sound designers and producers.'"
I'm not seeing Waldorf listed as a developer on iTunes yet. Curious what this will be branded under if real.
Currently I'm not seeing any info on http://www.waldorfmusic.de/ and no mention from the Musikmesse.

Suitcase Studio Improvisation 3
YouTube Uploaded by insanic4 on Sep 1, 2011
"Here is the third improvisation using my suitcase music studio. It was a sunny day here in the Netherlands so lots of natural lighting in this movie. On the Nintendo DSi XL I run the Korg DS-10 and on the iPod touch I run the FM3 Buddha Machine app which combines nicely with the lo-fi sound of the hardware Buddha Machine (that orange box). The DS10 and the Kaossilator are synced the old school way by pressing the play button at the right time (before I started filming). Once they're in sync they stay in sync for a long time.
There is one stupid mistake in this movie but I'm not telling you what it was :)
The suitcase has the following devices:
Korg Kaoss Pad Mini
Korg Kaossilator
Korg Monotron
Korg SR1 Sound on Sound
MFB Nanozwerg
FM3 Buddha Machine
Rolls MX41b
Art PowerMix III
Nintendo DSI XL with Korg DS10
Apple iPod Touch with Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer
MAM Map1
The audio was recorded with the Korg MR-2000S."

Little MIDI Machine V2 Now Available - Analog Style Step Sequencer for Free!
From Synthetic Bits, (makers of FunkBox), Little MIDI Machine V2 is now available. It now supports the iPhone and iPod Touch (min OS 4.3, bottom screenshot), CoreMIDI, sync, and best of all, it is still free!!! This is a pretty amazing little app when you consider how much the equivalent in hardware would cost you. If you have a device that supports MIDI to CV you should even be able to use it with your modular gear. And... you can store your sequences. If you think about it, an 8G iPod Touch runs $229 brand new. You can run this and other apps on it for less than what this would cost in hardware. A used iPod Touch or iPhone would be even less.
"Little MIDI Machine is an analog-style MIDI step sequencer app for CoreMIDI and/or the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface. This app requires you have a CoreMIDI setup or own the hardware Line 6 Mobilizer MIDI interface hardware accessory for full functionality.
Little MIDI Machine gives you the step sequencing power of a hardware analog sequencer on your iPad! Program two independent sequencers that send note and velocity MIDI data out on two MIDI channels to control your hardware synthesizers. LittleMM includes many of your favorite hardware sequencer features such as mute and un-mute notes, skip steps, reverse the sequencer, adjustable clock speed, etc. If you do not have a Line 6 Mobilizer or CoreMIDI setup, LittleMM can generate very basic melodic sounds in place of sending MIDI. This will let you play around with the app and try it out, but it is not a feature that will be developed further and is not the primary purpose of the app. LittleMM is intended to be a MIDI sequencer driving external hardware.
What's New in Version 2.0
Now a universal app that works with iPhone and iPod touch, as well as iPad
Added MIDI clock sync support
Added CoreMIDI USB/Network support
Added random sequencer mode
Updated graphics/UI
Other misc fixes/improvements
Minimum OS version is now 4.3
With Little Music Machine you can use your Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer interface or CoreMIDI network/USB setup to control your favorite hardware synth or apps running on other iOS devices and create mind-bending loops and sequences."

iPad MIDI on the Cheap
If you have an iOS device and have been considering using it with MIDI there are currently four options.
1) There's MIDI via the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer which requires apps that support MIDI through their SDK. Apps that do not support their SDK but support CoreMIDI will not work with it.
2) There's OSC to MIDI which requires that you have a device between the iPad and destination MIDI device that converts OSC messages to MIDI. Not all apps support this. For apps that do, this is fine if you want to control things on your computer with your iPad over wireless, but not so good if you want to control external hardware synths, unless of course, you are fine with using your computer as a MIDI dongle. The Missing Link is an option for direct wireless OSC to MIDI, bypassing the computer all together.
3) There is MIDI Wifi via DSMidiWifi or a Network Session to your computer. Again, this is great if you want to use your computer, but not good if you want to go direct iPad to hardware.
4) Finally, and probably most importantly for us gear heads, there is CoreMIDI which is becoming the standard for most apps. You can go wifi with a computer as your MIDI device, or for use without a PC you need two things, one you need the USB Camera Connection Kit from Apple (if you pick up a used one, make sure it comes with the USB attachment/dongle and not just the SD card attachment), and two, you need a class compliant MIDI device that will support what you plan to use it for. For example you can use the KORG NanoKeys for MIDI IN to the iPad, but obviously not for MIDI OUT of the iPad. See http://iosmidi.com/devices/ for a list of devices and what they support.
As I already have the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer and The Missing Link, I didn't want to spend too much for CoreMIDI, so I decided to go cheap and picked up the HDI MIDI Cable from Amazonfor $5 plus shipping for a total of $10.14. It works for me but some people are reporting various issues with it.
I hooked it up and it was instantly recognized by apps that support CoreMIDI. It uses the thin USB computer type cable as you can see. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but I do. For some reason, it feels thinner, lighter, and more flexible than some of the thicker MIDI cables I have. I should note the Line 6 MIDI mobilizer has even thinner, and flexible cables as well. Thinner is better with the iPad as the point is to be as unobstructed as possible. Length was also a concern for me and the cable is great at about six feet long. Again being light and thin is good and the device takes a very small profile compared to some other class compliant MIDI devices. One thing I did notice was when I accidentally nudged the Camera Connection Kit (the white square you see the HDI MIDI Cable connected to) and lost the connection, I had to completely remove it and re-seat it to get the app to pick it up again - the Camera Connection Kit that is, not the USB cable. The USB cable sits snug in the CCK. The only reason I mention this is to remember to keep the CCK snug if you are performing or recording! Another reason I have my fingers crossed for a wireless CoreMIDI device.
In short, if you are thinking of picking up or using your iPad with other hardware and/or software, research the apps you are interested in and make sure to note the method of connection they support. Most apps have a support site where you can also find out what they plan to support in the future. Check the http://iosmidi.com/devices/ list for supported hardware and those that are not supported. For example, older Midisport Uno USB devices with the solid blue enclosure will not work with CoreMIDI, while the new M-Audio Uno USB with the clear case will.
Apps pictured:
StepPolyArp - Midi Step Polyphonic Arpeggiator - Laurent Colson - great polyphonic sequencer and arpeggiator with some nice features. See the link for details on iTunes. Hooking it up with the KORG MicroKORG pictured or any synth for that matter is tons of fun. An interesting and obvious side note is you can use the iPad as a controller for your desktop synths that don't have keys. Setting up a small portable workspace with the iPad as your MIDI controller really can work. No you don't have full size keys but even setting up a mini keyboard in TouchOSC works surprisingly well.
Domestic Cat MIDI Touch - like TouchOSC but also supports Sysex and NRPN.
Not pictured but an alternative MIDI editor for the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer is S1MIDI Trigger.

1) There's MIDI via the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer which requires apps that support MIDI through their SDK. Apps that do not support their SDK but support CoreMIDI will not work with it.

TouchOSC Adds Native MIDI Support
It looks like TouchOSC has added native MIDI CC and Program change support. No sysex at the moment. What this means is you can use TouchOSC direct from iPad to your MIDI hardware sans PC. You will of course need the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer or CoreMIDI with a class compliant USB MIDI device and the camera connection kit.

NEW APPS AND ADDED FEATURES KEEP LINE 6 MIDI MOBILIZER AHEAD OF THE CURVE
"— New software development kit helps over 90 developers produce a wide variety of apps for MIDI Mobilizer™, the only MIDI interface for all Apple® iOS devices—
CALABASAS, Calif.—February 18, 2011—Line 6, Inc. (line6.com), the industry leader in digital modeling technology for music-creation products, has added new features and an updated SDK (software development kit) enabling key new features for the growing MIDI Mobilizer™ third party app developer community. MIDI Mobilizer is the only MIDI interface that can turn all models of iPhone®, iPad®, and iPod touch® into complete music production studios with the help of a parade of exciting third party software applications continually debuting on the App StoreSM.
“The SDK and firmware updates have inspired more than 90 software developers worldwide whose inventive apps are really demonstrating the full potential of MIDI Mobilizer,” remarked Chris Grigg, mobile products manager at Line 6. “Musicians of all kinds are now taking advantage of its enormous creative and practical uses.”
The SDK supports MIDI System Real Time messages such as MIDI Clock, which allows an app to sync to an external hardware drum machine or a sequencer running on a computer -- or vice versa, the drumbox or sequencer can sync to the app.
Available apps include MIDI control surfaces, synths, sequencers and complete music production software as well as DMX lighting control software and more. Recent additions include NLogSynth Pro with 126 synth sounds, StepPolyArp which is a step MIDI arpeggiator, NanoStudio which is a virtual recording studio and many more. All of these apps are available today on the App Store with more arriving all the time.
MIDI Mobilizer remains the best way for working musicians to leave the computer at home. It's powered by the iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, so no bulky "wall wart" power supply is needed. Great apps allow users to manage all sounds, sequences and other MIDI data right on the iPod touch, iPhone or iPad.
In addition to being first to the market and easiest to use, MIDI Mobilizer also has the distinction of being the least expensive. Consumers will be able to find the $99.99 suggested retail unit hitting the streets and web for around $69.99*.
