How Vince Clarke Made “Don’t Go” | Yazoo Synthpop Breakdown

video upload by Nostalgic Explorer

"What makes 'Don’t Go' by Yazoo one of the most iconic synthpop tracks of the 1980s?

In this video, I explore how Vince Clarke shaped the sound of early electronic music through his work with Yazoo, and how his minimalist but powerful approach to synthesizers helped define an entire genre. After leaving Depeche Mode, Clarke refined his production style — focusing on strong melodies, tight sequencing, and bold synth sounds — and “Don’t Go” is one of the best examples of that evolution.

Before diving into the recreation, I share a bit of context around Yazoo and why this track became so influential across synthpop and electronic music.

Then I take you into the studio.

Step by step, I recreate the track using a combination of vintage hardware and modern tools inside Logic Pro. For this version I used:

• Sequential Circuits Pro-One – basslines and lead elements
• Sequential Drumtraks – drum programming
• Logic Pro VST instruments – additional textures and supporting sounds

I walk through the recording process, sequencing, arrangement, and showing how each layer comes together to recreate the energy of the original track.

It is interesting to understand how Vince Clarke’s production approach continues to influence modern electronic music, from synthpop to contemporary electronic genres."

FairLight CMI EPROMs Inside a Sequential Circuits Drumtraks. #sequentialcircuits

video upload by Program 17

"This is fairly CMI Eproms I programmed inside of a sequential circus Drum track. I programmed them to hit harder. This is the best set I ever designed. I made more drums too. I made most of the CMI drums. When I designed the Fairlight CMI for originally for Bon Jovi’s guitar player John Shanks. He wanted the exact tears for Fears sound. Doing my research. All I kept on seeing was Fairlight CMi. I downloaded all the original sounds for the fairlight. I used a Oberheim prommer to design the binary files, I made them hit really hard. These have to be the best drums I ever designed.

Simmons SDS7 Digital Analog Drum System (1983) / hybrid analog drum synthesizer & 8 bit PCM rompler

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"in the first part of the video I run a simple pattern on a Roland TR8s that triggers the SDS7, and I demo a few kits I programmed.

On the second part I play live drums over a simple kick / hat / clap pattern and review the same drum kits and finally I play the sounds alone.

I'm no drummer so forgive my playing. These last parts are mainly intended as to demo how the SDS7 handles dynamics.

recorded through a Tapco 4400A reverb. No other fx or editing.

The Simmons SDS7 combines analog drum synthetis and 8 bits sample playing.
Each voice lets you blend 1x VCO (CEM3340), 1x 8 bit sample on eprom (like many 80s drum machines ie LinnDrum, Oberheim DMX, Sequential Circuits DrumTraks etc), 1x noise generator and 1x click generator.
Then those 4 sources pass through a nice 24db resonant filter (CEM3372), which doubles as VCA. There is a simple cutoff enveloppe and vca release parameter, and both the VCO and sample have a simple pitch enveloppe as long as a lfo to pitch modulation depth. The lfo speed can go to audio range thus enabling FM tone, great for bells and fx.
All voices card pcbs are the same except for the eprom containing the sample and this can be replaced with other sound (the clap on this unit is a CR8000 clap i programmed for instance).
There is however a second type of card, hi hats card, that differs from the basic one with some more components that let the voice be controlled by the hi hat pedal (decay of the sound mainly). It's easy to modify a regular card to a hi hat card, and to build a simple adapter in order to use a momentary switch pedal to act as the hi hat pedal. You can even use a progressive pedal to mimic the opening of the pedal, this is what I'm using and doing on the video (off screen). Info on how to achieve this are available on this site (thanks to the author for sharing this ): https://www.drummachines.de/beatboxer... If you're interested in these units tons of info are available on that site (again thanks to the author for the great job): https://snw.lonningdal.no/sds7.php"

VEMIA is Peter Forrest's auction house. He is the author of The A-Z of Analogue Synthesizer Books.

"Classic drum machine from Sequential Circuits Inc in the early 80s. Had a recent service by a top tech and new transformer added for 240v (was originally Japanese voltage). MIDI IN and OUT, but also links to analogue control. Six individual outs. UK voltage. NB: after a period of not being used, one of the buttons (the left arrow key on the calculator-like section) was sticking in - you might just see that in the photo. It has now been replaced and the issue resolved. Packing at VEMIA 9GBP."

"Excellent cosmetic and working condition. All buttons and potentiometers work as intended. MIDI is fully functional. Master output and all individual channel outputs work. Program saving works, and I have saved a couple, but I mostly operated this via MIDI.

Has a new memory battery installed, new Panasonic power supply capacitors, and new volume potentiometers so there is no crackle when adjusting. Will also include an extra button/drum pad I purchased as a future spare.

Includes all of the original Sequential EPROMs with factory drum samples, as well as a few custom EPROMs with additional sounds. Also has the latest firmware installed, and will include the original, older firmware should you decide to use it.

Only 3 known faults. First it is missing a button cap, however this is cosmetic and the button is still fully functional. Second is a scratch in the front panel above the Channel 5 buttons. Third is for some reason the metronome output jack doesn’t seem to be working. Perhaps I’m doing something wrong but figured I’d mention it."

Free Drum Machine - Drum Traqs by Full Bucket Music

video upload by Elektronick Musick

"Classic Drum Machine Emulation

DrumTraqs is a software instrument for Microsoft Windows (VST2/VST3/CLAP/AAX) and Apple macOS (VST2/VST3/CLAP/AU/AAX) simulating the classic Sequential Circuits Drumtraks drum computer from 1983. It is written in native C++ code for high performance and low CPU consumption.

Main features are:

Simulation of the original Z80 system used in the hardware

Original factory and some additional ROM samples

Old-school Pattern and Song building

Built-in stereo mixing options

SysEx and MIDI import/export

Resizable user interface (not "N" version!)

MIDI Learn – all parameters and buttons can be controlled by MIDI CC

Plug-in supports Windows and macOS

DrumTraqs is not intended to be the latest hot-stuff power drum plug-in with bells and whistles (although there are some bells), the most cunning AI-driven super- human composition assistance tool, nor the coolest mega spawn of those magical 80s sound machines. Instead it is a faithful recreation of the original hardware with all its limitations and only a few extensions. Don't be afraid of time travel - this is the way drum computers were handled more than 40 years ago!"
