Mike Dean Building a Track Is Analog Synth Mayhem | The Process
video upload by Reverb
"Even if you don't know his name, you know Mike Dean's sound. The super-producer and "Synth God" solo artist is a pillar of modern music production. The Weeknd, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Travis Scott, Madonna, Jay-Z, Christine and the Queens—these artists and more have made classics with Dean, and that's just his recent work.
Before that, he helped craft a whole era of Southern hip-hop with the likes of Scarface, Geto Boys, UGK, and Devin the Dude, after getting his start as Selena's keyboardist and musical director.
Ahead of an upcoming solo performance at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theatre on March 1, we got the chance to see the genius at work, learning first-hand exactly why so many artists seek him out.

Behringer on Moog Layoffs
This one was shared by Behringer on Facebook. Note Moog is not out of business, see Moog's statement here, so the image shared by Behringer on the left is a bit misleading. [Update: the image is actually from the video below that Behringer refers to. Behringer did not create the image. Thx to @uniquewerkx for the heads up.] That said here's what they had to say.
"Usually we just ignore such inflammatory videos. However, we have decided to respond this time, as it provides a perfect example of why we have previously emphasized that some influencers prioritize clickbait and disparagement over delivering accurate information.
In reality, in May of this year, Mike Adams, the CEO of Moog, reached out to Uli to propose selling Moog. Both individuals have had a longstanding friendly relationship. Therefore, Mike reached out to us first and shared all the financials as well the company’s challenges.
Mike's decision to sell Moog was influenced by his advanced age and serious mistakes made on the supply chain side. The company had purchased excessive inventory, leading to significant cashflow constraints.
While we believe Moog is a great brand, we declined the purchase due to our low-price business model not aligning with the luxury model Moog is pursuing.
Blaming us for Moog's struggles is as reasonable as blaming Yamaha for the bankruptcy of Sequential, Oberheim, ARP and Moog in the 1980s when the DX7 and other digital synths were introduced to the market.
We wish Moog and its people all the best and believe they have a great future. Both brands serve a very different customer base that can perfectly coincide.
Our focus will always be on creating highly affordable products so everyone can discover the world of music. Our mission is to empower the musicians that don’t have deep pockets.
As always, we encourage you to conduct your own research and form your own opinion🙂. Mark."

CustomSynth Spotting on The Streets -- The Edge of a Cliff
Published on Apr 7, 2009 thebeats
"Mike's Blog: http://mikeskinner.so The D.O.T.: http://the-dot.net"
via @customsynth:
"this meant a lot to me glad to have painted a couple of things The Streets -- The Edge of a Cliff"
Custom synths come towards the end.
Some great lyrics to think about as well:
"I lay right there once at the edge of the rock
I was ready to jump, I was ever so lost
But this gentleman stopped and said something I never forgot
For billions of years since the outset of time
Every single one of your ancestors has survived
Every single person on your mum and dad's side
Successfully looked after and passed on to you life
What are the chances of that, like?
It comes to me once in a while
And everywhere I tell folk it gets the best smile"

"ARP 2600 synthesizer in exceptional, 100% original condition and in good working order with the optional, duophonic 3620 keyboard! This is the grandaddy of synths, with three VCOs, a 24 dB/oct filter, one ADSR envelope, one VCA and one mixer section, an envelope follower, ring modulator, noise generator, LFO with sample and hold, built-in spring reverb and a pre-amplifier with stereo speakers. All features have been tested and function as they should with the included keyboard controller. Used by everyone from Joy Division to Nine Inch Nails, the 2600 is legendary and can be found on an incredible number of landmark recordings. An ARP 2600 was even used to create the sounds for R2-D2 for the original Star Wars trilogy!
This particular 2600 is Version 4.0 made only briefly in 1974 and one of the last to include the model 4012 filter, which was discontinued in ARP products just two short years later due to the fact that it was virtually identical to the filter used in the best MOOG products of the day. The 2600 versions 1-4 are virtually identical except for the fact that versions 3-4 utilized more reliable VCO chips and a more rugged enclosure. Versions 3-4 can be noted by the G clef ARP logo, still remarkably clean and intact on the outside of the gray tolexed case (photo #6). Cosmetically, this 2600 is remarkably clean. The photos simply don't due this beauty justice! With the exception of a couple small tears in the tolex on the bottom edge of the outer case, it could have just walked out of the ARP factory. We've even had a couple notable artists (we won't say who :) through Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar in the past week who have exclaimed that it's the cleanest 2600 they've ever seen, and we can't help but agree!"
