Linndrum vs Oberheim DX vs Sequential Drumtraks. Which classic 1980s drum machine comes out on top?

video upload by Brian Coyne Guitar

"In this video, I put three legendary vintage drum machines head-to-head:
🥁 LinnDrum (1983)
🥁 Oberheim DX
🥁 Sequential Drumtraks

I'll compare their sounds in the room, explore their tuning capabilities, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each machine, and share my thoughts on which one is the easiest—and most inspiring—to use.

Then we'll take all three into the studio and hear them recorded directly into the DAW in stereo with no processing, playing classic 1980s-style beats inspired by artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Phil Collins, Dead or Alive, and more.

You'll hear:
• Raw stereo recordings of all three machines
• Individual drum sounds and tuning demonstrations
• Workflow and programming comparisons
• Pros and cons of each machine
• Which machine sounds the most hi-fi
• Which machine delivers the most authentic 1980s vibe

These machines helped define the sound of an entire decade. But nearly 40 years later, which one still holds up best?

Watch the shootout and let me know your favorite in the comments!"

He made an entire album with one synth

video upload by Julian "J3PO" Pollack

"In this video, I share the story behind A Brief Odyssey: an ambient synth album I created entirely with a single synthesizer: the Sequential FOURM.

What started as a simple experiment in creative limitation quickly became one of the most rewarding musical projects I’ve ever completed. By removing almost every option from my studio and focusing on one instrument, I found myself working faster, trusting my instincts more, and spending less time chasing ideas and more time actually making music.

Along the way, I discuss the creative process, sound design, poly aftertouch, improvisation, ambient music production, and why limitations can sometimes be the key to unlocking creativity. I also demonstrate several of the patches used throughout the album, many of which became factory presets on the FOURM itself.

The rain of yesterday | Sequential Prophet 10 and Virus TI soundscape

video upload by MIDERA

"For the first time in what feels like a very long time - I've felt some hope. Received some good news that provides at least some stability in my job. And to celebrate (a little), I finally, after 10 years, updated my camera from the Canon 5D mkii to the R6 mkii and wanted to test it out. I doubt it's any better from a YouTube perspective... my 5D2 always did work alright, but it's nice to finally have something a little more up to date.

Fading Horizons | Ambient Session with Sequential Fourm & Digitone2 (Soft Pulse 10)

video upload by Haiko Senchan

"It's been a wild week, and the Sequential Fourm has arrived. This is my first real session with the synth, and I think I like it. I always thought I didn't need a keyboard, but I guess I was wrong. Since the synth doesn't have any built-in effects, I naturally added plenty in Ableton. Delay, reverb, and a few other things to give the sound some punch as part of the Ambient series.

All the sounds are from the Fourm except for one arpeggiator line. I used Stepic to trigger the Digitone and opened and closed the filter in the video. I also played the high pad live during the video.

I think the synth will be staying for a while; it was a real joy to create this track, and I hope you like it.

I wish you all a happy, sunny weekend."

Korg USA Mourns the Passing of Jack Hotop, Legendary Sound Designer and Innovator

Some sad news in via Korg.

You can find posts on MATRIXSYNTH featuring Jack Hotop here for a look back on his influence in the synthesizer community. The first post was a simple pic back in 2006.

Press release from Korg follows:

Over a 40-Year Career, the Influential Synthesist and Accomplished Touring Keyboardist Shaped the Sonic Architecture of More Than 100 Landmark Instruments, Including the Historic M1 Workstation

MELVILLE, N.Y. - Korg USA announces with deep sadness the passing of longtime employee, celebrated sound designer, and musical instrument industry icon Jack Hotop. Joining Korg USA (then Unicord) in 1983, Hotop started as Senior Voicing Manager and spent over four decades driving the development, sound design, programming, voicing, and product demonstrations for more than 100 Korg products. As a pioneering engineer and exceptionally skilled performer, his extensive contributions helped guide the evolution of synthesizers and digital workstations from the early 1980s through the modern era, leaving an indelible imprint on instruments used by musicians around the world and for generations to come.

Hotop’s foundational expertise was anchored in a rigorous musical and technical background. Raised in a musical family, he began piano lessons at age seven, inspired by his father, a musician featured on several Broadway cast recordings, and numerous pianists on his mother’s side. By age 14, he was actively performing in local bands on a Gibson 101 organ. He pursued formal training at the Berklee College of Music, majoring in arranging, composition, and accompaniment, before expanding into emerging music technology at the Boston School of Electronic Music under Roger Powell. It was there that Hotop established his core synthesis fundamentals using early hardware including the ARP Odyssey, 2600, 2500, and EMS Synthi, building a deep understanding of waveforms, envelopes, low-frequency oscillators, and modulators.

NINE INCH NAILS - A Warm Place (Cover - Prophet REV2 & Elektron Analog Heat+FX)

video upload by nicola neeco

"This is my reinterpretation of A Warm Place by Nine Inch Nails, originally from The Downward Spiral album.

Instead of recreating the dense layering of the original, I approached the piece with a more minimal setup, using the Sequential Prophet Rev2, routed into the Elektron Analog Heat+FX (for saturation, compression, eq & filter)

The sound of the synth comes from a complex patch I recently designed, actually built as two separate patches, one for each hand (split mode).
There’s a certain tonal character in this patch that reminds me of Lorn’s work: dark, emotional, and slightly detuned. That influence naturally found its way into this version.

This is less about replication and more about translation: trying to preserve the emotional core of the original while reshaping its sonic identity through a different instrument and perspective."
