Dual mono recording and using stackables featuring Strega and 0-Coast.

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"New modules are cool, but old modules are cool too.
Strega Unleashed is not the most descriptive title, but hey, I suck at making my videos easier to find by a wider audience. This is for everyone who wants to get more stereo from a mono semi-modular synth.

My increasing love and diminishing hate relationship with Strega is still going strong. I was under the impression I heard most of what it can do, but I was wrong. This whole idea started when I wondered about the Buchla TTA 264 'polyphonic adapter' which could round robin notes to various destinations. I am not using it in this video, this is more like a proof of concept. Strega is obviously a mono voice, but the delay accepts 'pitch cv'. The same applies to the 'Agitation' LFO. It gets even cooler when you also have a O-Coast because it provides another VCO and the 'Slope' LFO which can run audio rate too. The 264 could send pitch CV to four destinations like a rotating sequential switch and this will probably also work with the WMD sequential switch matrix.

However, in this proof of concept I'll just use stackables to honor the 'dark easel' as it comes, so without any fancy modules you don't own, and only using free VST's from Native Instruments (Replika, Raum). So there are two main takeaways in this video, regardless of owning a Strega or not. Stackables can make your old synth sound brand new, and recording your outputs on as many mono channels in the DAW as you can - so you can mix, pan and add FX later."

Crossing the threshold: New Systems Instruments’ “discrete map”

video upload by Electrum Modular

"New Systems Instruments sent me their new module, Discrete Map. It’s a deep module, with lots of potential uses, so I’ll be dedicating the next few videos to it. This first, introductory video uses it as a generative sequencer, extracting an evolving melody from a Lorenz chaos trajectory."

"Novum! New Systems Instruments has created a unique and innovative approach to generating sequences with Discrete Map.

New Systems Instruments consistently surprises with innovative designs! Discrete Map fits right in, taking a simple concept and turning it on its head. At its core, it’s an 8-step sequencer that can output a traditional step-by-step sequence. The pitch values are set using the eight upper faders, but what makes it truly special are the eight lower faders, which determine which step is played at any given moment.

The sequencer’s X input accepts any signal, a clock, an LFO, or even another sequence. The lower faders set threshold values, and the switches below them define whether they react to a rising or falling edge. This means the sequence jumps to different steps based on the incoming signal, creating a highly controllable form of randomness! The results are striking! Complex rhythms and surprising melodies that become even more dynamic when paired with the expander for voltage-controlled step selection.

Discrete Map also includes an onboard oscillator. A switch toggles between a slow and fast frequency range. When slow, it functions as a standard step sequencer. Another switch changes from Position mode (explained above) to Length mode, where the lower faders control step duration. When switched to the fast mode tho, it becomes a graphic oscillator that tracks V/Oct.

To round out the package, Discrete Map includes additional utilities for better integration with other modules. The precision adder for example allows an external voltage to transpose the entire sequence.

The A/B/C Expander further enhances functionality, adding three assignable groups for the steps. Each group gains CV-controllable threshold values and dedicated gate outputs for active steps. And because that´s not enough there's also a sequential switch. Several discrete maps and A/B/C expanders can be linked together!

Overall, an incredibly well-thought-out and entirely fresh approach to sequence generation!

Features:

8-step sequencer for a single track
Generates sequences based on any input signal
8 lower faders to position steps in time
8 upper faders to set step values
One-shot mode
Oscillator mode with V/Oct tracking
Adjustable output voltage range (-5V to 5V / 0V to 5V / 0V to 2.5V)
Precision adder for transposing sequences
Gate output
Ramp output for internal clock signal"

Bend & Twist Time with Voltage Addressed Sequencing // Discrete Map from New Systems Instruments
video upload by DivKid

"Here’s the new Discrete Map and expander from New Systems Instruments. Deeply routed in influence from the Buchla MARF & a Serge Modular style approach to sequencing, coupled with a heady mix of physics and electronics (as New Systems Instruments do so well) the Discrete Map allows you to use voltages to bend and manipulate a time map across 8 stages of voltages. From basic to more advanced sequencing, unique time and rhythm creation to some bonkers graphic VCO applications there’s a lot we get into in the video."

PlantsSystem-Diminish

video upload by plantssystem

"Precise and organic. PlantsSystem latest track, 'Diminish' is an ambitious work that uses the rough texture of analog equipment from the 70s and 80s to create a futuristic sound image.

The dry and sharp rhythm of the BOSS Dr.55 is impressive for its inorganic hardness while maintaining the precision of a metronome. Layered on top of that is the swell and spread of the sound of the Sequential Prophet-5. The filter changes and modulation movements create gentle ripples in the space. And the Yamaha CS-10 gives the low range a strong outline, firmly supporting the whole.

'Diminish' is not just a retro nostalgia hobby. It combines the rawness of analog equipment with modern architectural beauty to present a soundscape that transcends the time axis. The noise and fluctuations that suddenly appear in the meticulous construction are like the sound of a plant growing picked up by a microphone. As befits the name PlantsSystem, this is a musical experience that shakes up the boundaries between artificial and natural. #dr55 #prophet5 #cs10"

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this Reverb listing

"This is a Sequential Prophet-VS in excellent working condition, professionally serviced and tested by a former Sequential engineer in Japan.

Cosmetically rated "Good" due to minor touch-up spots visible on the surface.

These areas were professionally treated to prevent rust and ensure long-term durability.

Functionally, the unit performs excellently (except for aftertouch).

✅ Key Features:

LCD backlight replaced – bright and clear, with auto-off after 5 minutes of inactivity. Reactivates on touch.

Factory programs and waveforms fully restored – original Vector synthesis presets are ready to play.

Velocity-sensitive keyboard fully functional.

Aftertouch is currently non-functional due to a failed pressure sensor.

All other keyboard functions, including velocity and general playability, are working perfectly.

All sliders, buttons, and the joystick operate smoothly.

No audio issues, tuning is stable and accurate.

Internal memory is backed by a good battery – no patch loss."

Commodore Custom Built Circuit Bent Synth with Cynthcart and Screen

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this eBay listing

"Listing is for a custom built circuit bent commodore synth with cynthcart and screen. This custom build device was made around 2009 and has been used a few times but mostly stored. Honestly forgot I had it. If I recalled I think the purchase price was around 600 from the person who built it.
Some of the knobs are blank for future wiring mods. The ones I checked I listed on with tape. Octave changes, Volume knob, Filter on off switch, Filter cutoff. The cynthcart is the sound module on a card for the commodore sounds and can be played on the darker keys. The device works and was tested before listing however since this is a custom build some functionality may vary. It played sounds and sounds as I remember.
———
Listing is being sold AS IS so if there are any questions please just ask.
———
Functionality for the cynthcart I found is listed below.
———
cynthcart is a cartridge I developed for the Commodore 64 computer that turns it into a standalone analog synthesizer with MIDI support. The Commodore 64's SID is one of the most interesting 8-bit sound chips of all time, and I was unsatisfied with the available SID synthesizer software. Cynthcart supports the original Commodore 64 piano keyboard overlay (shown below), and MIDI interfaces by Datel, Passport, Sequential, and Kerberos. Cynthcart's key-command user interface allows it to be played and controlled without a monitor, making it especially suitable for live performance.
FEATURES:
● 30 preset sound patches
● Arpeggiator, portamento, vibrato, and tremolo effects
● Analog filter control and effects
● Control of attack, release, and other sound parameters
● MIDI support including pitch bend, patch changes, and controllers
● On-screen help
● Color visualizer display
● Mono stack, 3-voice mode, and 6-voice mode (with second SID)
● No latency
● SID hex editor for advanced users
● Ability to turn off video chip to reduce noise
● PAL and NTSC pitch tables with automatic selection
● Copies itself to RAM (cartridge can be removed after booting"

Add a killer analog filter, sequencer, feedback and distortion generators and a 3 delay processors! Not to mention the modulation section and routing.. This to me, and many other synth freaks was Dave Smiths most fully featured synth.. shhh.. dont tell anyone, but it's also his best sounding synth since the old Sequential days 70's / 80's."

Sequential Six-Trak: Bringing a 40-year-old synth back into the game with the Model610 iPad app!

video upload by philtc

"Bought this synth from a local ad, didn't know much about it, except that it has full MIDI CC implementation, which is insane considering it's 40 years old! Also, there's an iPad app that makes it really easy to tweak the sound. This is my first test with the app and it's pretty straightforward. No talking, as always! There were some glitches in the recording, so I had to cut some small sections, hence the transitions.

Music of the wind: a modular Aeolian harp

video upload by Electrum Modular

"Combine a modular synth with a wind gauge and you get what we might call an electro-aerophone: an electronic instrument that can transform the wind into music … and, in the process, reconnect us to our environment.

On this second trip to the park, I simulate an Aeolian harp with the help of an eight-band, resonating filter bank, a comparator, and an addressable sequential switch.
