Recreate The Synth Sounds of DAFT PUNK, NIN, & THE PRODIGY With Distortion Pedals
Published on Jun 24, 2019 Learson Peak
This is one of the posts that lead me down the YouTube rabbit hole. First the video of BREAKWATER featured above:
BREAKWATER LIVE 1978 NO LIMITS
Published on Sep 7, 2012 bassmania99
"RARE VIDEO OF THE ORIGINAL RECORDING BAND 1978. KAE WILLIAMS JR KEYBOARDS, STEVE GREEN BASS, GENE ROBINSON LEAD VOCALS AND TRUMPET, GREG SCOTT SAX, JIMMY JONES DRUMS, JOHN "DUTCH" BRADDOCK PERCUSSION, ZAE "LINC LOVE" GILMORE GUITAR & VINCE DUTTON SAX."
Next, a video I found of Breakwater's "Release the Beast" featuring the sample. Turns out it was overdubbed to a video clip of Phantom of the Paradise featuring TONTO.

And finally the original clip of TONTO in Phantom of the Paradise:

Dr Bob Moog demonstrates the Minimoog
YouTube Uploaded by analoghell on Sep 13, 2006
"In extract from a 1980's BBC Micro Live special on electronic music in which Dr Bob Moog demonstrates the Minimoog."
This one was originally posted back on September 16, 2006. I have a policy of only posting things once considering how much goes up, but I realize I didn't embed it back then. I just saw the video after the last post and thought today was obviously a good day to embed it.

Malcolm Cecil's TONTO Coming to Town - Live Event

Poet of Sound and Image KiNo in Exhibition and Live Performance
New Vague: Invasion from Within
June 3 - 29, 2011
Featuring performance version installation of the world's largest synthesizer, TONTO
and two-dimensional works by artists Bill Alpert, Bartus Bartolomes, Scott Alger, Astolfo Funes and Marjan Denkov.
New York, NY - Poet of Sound and Image KiNo will unleash a programme of sonic and visual ephemera in line with his psychedelic live musical performances for the month of June at the World Monuments Fund Gallery (15 East 27th Street.) The landscape will be punctuated by two-dimensional works from artists Bill Alpert, Bartus Bartolomes, Scott Alger, Astolfo Funes and Marjan Denkov.
KiNo uses images, sounds and words to comment on the fundamental aspects of human beings and their behavior. With unwavering intimations of conscience, his work strives to stimulate the emotional intelligence of his audience. During his 27 day residency, KiNo will present a universe of sound, film, and live installation.
"Sonic wizard" Jeff Blenkinsopp (Pink Floyd, Vangelis, The Secret Machines) invented an analogue processing device especially for KiNo known as the KiNo Live Rig. This one of a kind machine will join forces with the world's largest synthesizer, T.O.N.T.O. (The Original New Timbral Orchestra). Created by Malcolm Cecil (credited for electrifying Stevie Wonder), the performance version of TONTO will be installed at the gallery. For video footage of TONTO, click here. [embed below]
Nine special sets of KiNo's original music and sonic pieces will be performed throughout the month, combining the forces of the KiNo Live Rig and TONTO. A treasured special-guest lineup includes the following artists (for more information on them, click here):
Malcolm Cecil ("Godfather of electronic music")
Andy Rourke (The Smiths)
Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs)
DJ Jonathan Peters
Jesper Kyd (composer: Hitman, Assassin's Creed)
Ilhan Ersahin (Wax Poetic)
Juini Booth (Sun Ra/McCoy Tyner)
Kenny Wollesen (Tom Waits)

Sonic Reality Studios

In the third video they talk about the Lowrey organ used in The' Who's Baba O'riley. They mention that some thought the gated sequence effect in the track was done with a synth but was actually all the Lowrey organ, specifically the Marimba effect. Do not confuse this with The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again below which was processed by the EMS VC3S.

Formant Modular Through Dynacord Demo
Update: You can find some pics of the modular posted here.
Title link takes you to an awesome demo of the Formant Modular via Georg. Right click the link and save it locally, and then play it. You can follow the timeline below that way.
Details
- Q+ Arpeggiator is driving via Midi CV/Gate the Formant
- Formant into Dynacord TAM 21
- Dyncard DRP20 used with Warm Gate Preset
Formant Drums
0:00 - no patch cords
0:13 - Feedback Loop with the RFM (Resonant Filter Module)
0:26 - Noise into the 24 dB filter
0:39 - Decay tweaks for filter and amp envelope
1:00 - tweaking the RFM settings
1:25 - Full LFO action on the TAM 21
1:35 - Stepping through TAM 21 modes
2:00 - Killer Resonance of the TAM 21
2:39 - Envelope Follower on Resonance
3:00 - TAM 21 off
3:05 - DRP20 off
Update via Georg:
"It is the Formant as introduced in the magazine Elektor in 1977/78 designed by C. Chapman. My Formant was built from Kits of a company called ICA, which sold those kits in Germany. It is not the Formant Pro or MSS2000."
More Updates via swissdoc (Georg) in the comments:
"Those kits are not available anymore, you may find a used system though. The original VCO Design was uA726 based, a chip which is not produced anymore.
Check this links, the latter has the scanned books with all the circuits:
http://www.analoghell.com/studio/forsale/formant/
http://rubidium.dyndns.org/cag/
The soundcharacter of the formant.dynacord demo is quite much from the TAM 21, a BBD based analog flanger plus the RFM module of the Formant, which is a 3 band parametric equalizer."
and
"Some more sound examples from the Formant, this time directly taken from the output, no further processing.
The VCOs - First showing off the 5 different waveforms of one VCO (sin/tri/sqr/saw/spaced saw) then activating more and more waveforms on the 3 VCOs until all 15 are active
PWM - 3 VCOs with square waves, then gradually ativating PWM for all VCOs by the 3 LFOs, then tweaking 12 dB filter settings and the envelope
12 dB Filter LP/HP/BP - Running the VCOs through the 12 dB Filter in the various modes while tweaking envelope intensity, filter frequency and resonance.
FM - The VCOs are set up in a circular FM configuration, 1->2, 2->3, 3->1 with maximum intensity, then various waveforms are switched on and off on the 3 VCOs
Georg."

The Technos Acxel Resynthesizer

Acxel Resynthesizer page on Synrise.de [update: looks like it no longer available]. Peter originally sent in the link along with the two videos below. I actually posted the videos back on June 6 via Chris Strellis on Twango. It looks like they have been added to YouTube by analoghell. Vangelis & CS80 on YouTube
video upload by analoghell
I remember seeing this a while back elsewhere, but I lost the link. Looks like analoghell put it up on YouTube. That's THE CS80 sound. Wow.
Update via reed in the comments of this other post: "The only string sounds Vangelis used the CS80 for were solo-string type sounds. He mainly used the instrument for that brassy lead, low drones, the guitar patch & the bass patch. He always did strings with a string machine. Those big impressive string & choir swells in Blade Runner are nothing more than a Roland VP-330 & a volume pedal with the occasional CS80 note on top or bottom. The VP-330 was also the secret weapon in Chariots of Fire, Missing, Antartica and The Bounty. Before that he used the Roland Paraphonic 505, and before that it was Farfisa & Elka boxes. The choir sound in "Heaven & Hell" was a real choir.
The real key to the CS80 is the keyboard with poly aftertouch & the performance controls on the lower right, not the main patch."

Analoghell - New Flickr Set

Title link takes you to the set.
"Memorymoog, Jupiter 8 and Waldorf Wave"
Update: The shot belongs to the Turnkey flickr set, so I'm guessing that is where it's from. Can anyone confirm? I heard Turnkey had a room filled with vintage gear but I didn't realize it looked this nice. I also heard most of the gear came from The Museum of Synthesizer Technology and Turnkey has indeed sold most of it off: link to a previous post on the Museum and Turnkey.
Update via GRONDO 2001 in the comments:
"This huge collection used to be there at the bottom floor, but it's been gone for the last 3 years. They used to offer some time in this 'lab' when you bought a hardware sampler, otherwise you couldn't access it. When they got rid of it, they didn't say anything, it was just gone one day, and today it's just another show room."
Update via anonymous in the comments:
"On a number of occasions they would shoot interviews there - anyone who remembers the C4 series "The Shape of Things That Hum" would remember Nick Rhodes being interviewed in there from the Fairlight episode... "
