PRESS RELEASE: Kyma Control for iPad

"Kyma Control: the Swiss Army Knife of Controllers
New iPad app bundles four of the most popular Kyma controllers into one wireless multi-touch package

CHAMPAIGN IL-October 22, 2010-Symbolic Sound's new 'Kyma Control' app for the iPad gives sound designers, musicians, and researchers a new wireless multi-touch controller for the Kyma/Paca(rana) sound design workstation (http://www.symbolicsound.com/Products/KymaControl).

Features
'Kyma Control' bundles four of the most popular Kyma controller-types into one, wireless multi-touch package that includes:

* An auto-mapped, labelled, bi-directional controller/display that mirrors Kyma's Virtual Control Surface. All of the controls you see on the computer screen are also available on the iPad screen, including the Preset selection and Roll-the-dice options [top pic]

* A multi-touch pen/tablet-style controller, tracking as many as 11 fingers with identifying color trails to help you keep track of where your fingers are touching the screen

* A standard piano-style keyboard with discrete or continuous pitches and an extra dimension for !KeyTimbre control in Kyma

* A Tonnetz pitch-space keyboard with configurable vertical and horizontal intervals for experimenting with different pitch layouts;

* Plus accelerometer and compass-heading controls. Accelerometers supply both triggers and continuous controls based on acceleration in the X, Y, and Z directions, along with controls corresponding to Pitch, Roll and Yaw. A compass heading control corresponds to the current direction of the iPad and is useful for panning and other directional controls;

Here's a quick video demo of the Kyma Control app from Symbolic Sound.

And here are some videos from DJ Kero's studio.

Applications
For use in the studio, on stage, in a theatre or performance venue, in an installation, in the lab, at home, or in classroom, Kyma Control frees you from having to sit in front of your computer. Put yourself in the middle of the audience, inside the sound field, and perform your Sounds in an expressive, intuitive manner using multi-touch. Performers can have access to sound controls from the stage or in the recording studio, and voice talent can have access to a silent controller in the voice-over booth. In perception and speech experiments, subjects can use a wireless, silent controller with no mechanical parts, perfect for sound-isolation booths.

Requirements
* Apple iPad
* Symbolic Sound Kyma X.77 (or newer) running on Windows or Mac OS host computer
* Symbolic Sound Paca(rana) Sound Computation Engine
* WiFi connection to a network that is accessible to the Paca(rana) (OR contact Delora software for information on their PacaConnect application for creating an ad hoc network using the built-in Airport on a Macintosh)

Pricing & Availability
Available now from the app store. For more information, a video demonstration, and a link to the iTunes store, please visit: http://www.symbolicsound.com/Products/KymaControl

The Junior-106 gets Unison Detune

via Henrik:
"I have started modifications of both the assigner CPU firmware code and the voice board CPU firmware to try to add some or all of the features below. So far unison detune has been proved working. In my current software I have temporarily disabled portamento control and instead use the portamento pot to control detune spread amount. The patch to replace portamento with unison detune is just 43 bytes, amazing what you can acheive with full hardware control..."

See the following page details: http://nydell.se/projects/j106/chap10.html, also a new page on how to add eprom sockets to eprom-less versions of the Juno-106 (http://nydell.se/projects/j106/chap12.html)." Be sure to do a search on Junior-106 in the search box on the right here on MATRIXSYNTH for prior posts including video. Blogger search on the top left is coming up short for this one.

Night Over Rabacal / Nord Modular G2 sound

YouTube via beckhusen | October 22, 2010

"The video is for presenting the sound, the sound is for presenting the video and made only with CLAVIA NORD MODULAR G2.
RABACAL is an national park in Madeira, Portugal. You can't go there directly by car, but the tour across the mountains is so great, even by day as by night, absolute stunning. In the clip you'll follow the night drive from Porto Moniz about Encumeada to Ribeira Brava. The main altitude is around 1600m, there's no fog, it are the clouds which i'm driving through."

New Synthetic Sound Labs 1310 Digital Delay

In The Ninth Season (demo).mov

YouTube via davidryle | October 22, 2010

Audio comes in around :37.
"This is a demonstration of the new Synthetic Sound Labs 1310 Digital Delay module. The device is capable of subtle doubling, hard timed delays and super flanging. I mostly am using it as a gentle flanger in this demo but it is far more powerful than what I demo here. You can get one for your 5U MU modular synthesizer by checking out the website at http://www.steamsynth.com/

I also finished a project where I was modifying a stock Q111 Pan/Fade module from Synthesizers.com. I added an attenuator pot to the control input and added an inverter circuit to the output #2. This enables the Panning portion of the module to output audio to two channels of my mixer in stereo. I have control over how wide the panning is and both output channels are normal (un-inverted) so there is no cancellation when sending to effects etc..

I am using several other delay units as well in this demo. TC Electronics D-Two is way in the background so it isn't really a factor. Strymon 's Blue Sky Reverberator is the heavy plate reverb in the background. The Korg Kaoss 3 pad is used to have some looping fun, but I tried to keep it low level so not to interfere with the demo of the 1310 delay module.

There are four separate voices playing in this piece from the modular. The sequencers are generating various time signatures and loops but all of the distorted flanging effect is the 1310 Digital Delay. This is one fun unit and a great addition to my modular synth.

The title is about the amount of time since I got serious about building a modular synth to work with. It has been a little over two years (9 seasons) since I made the commitment. No looking back and I am very happy with the move away from dedicated keyboards and soft synths (although I still use them for other things).

Thanks to Doug Slocum at Synthetic Sound Labs for the great delay module. He has other ideas in the works and I am very excited about the future of his endeavor."

Casio HZ600

via this French auction site.

This one spotted and sent in via electraumatisme. I don't think I've seen one before. It looks a bit like a Roland Alpha Juno.

"A vendre synthé numérique casio HZ600 avec un filtre résonnant analogique :
- clavier léger grandes touches 5 octaves,
- splittable,molette de modulation et pitchbend
- midi in, out, thru,
- sorties stéréo en jack 6,35,
- transfo fourni et fixé sur le clavier.

Ce synthé sonne très analo. Excellent rapport qualité/prix.
A voir sur Lille."

Update via popman in the comments:

"Here is some more informations I found after I sent you this auction :

"The HZ-600 was the first SD synthesizer, and was the only SD synthesizer built to look like a "professional" synthesizer, i.e., without built-in speakers or auto-accompaniment controls. In contrast to the bulky-looking Casio CZ line, the HZ-600 was deliberately styled after the sleek-looking Roland Alpha Juno 2 right down to the inclusion of an "alpha-dial" programming wheel. The HZ-600 was a 61-key, 8-note polyphonic basic-MIDI synthesizer without initial- or after-touch, and functionally was essentially an advanced Korg Poly-800. Like the Poly-800, all voices (in each channel) shared a single VCF, meaning the VCF envelope would retrigger when a new note was played, affecting all previous notes still playing. The HZ-600 included 3 levels of onboard analog chorus, 3 selectable keyboard split points, 3 selectable pitch-bender ranges, a modulation wheel, transpose, and a card slot for the new sleek Casio RA-100 RAM cards, which had 8K of memory. Unlike the CZ series, portamento was not available."
