52 Reason / Record Tips - Week 47: Malström Graintable Synthesis

YouTube via PropellerheadSW | February 09, 2011 |

"If you think of last three weeks of Synth School as primary school, then this week we're graduating up to Middle School. Don't worry, though... there's no detention or pop quizes. This week we'll move onto the Malström Graintable Synthesizer which was introduced in Reason version 2.0.

I think you'll be surprised with how comfortable you are switching to a new synth. You'll be applying a lot of what you've learned already, like ADSR envelopes, oscillator pitch controls, etc. You'll also be seeing new controls and knobs that come with the graintable synthesis territory, like Shift and Motion."

Native Instruments - Absynth Sound Design (ethereal)

YouTube via ANTsynth | February 09, 2011 |

"The sound is a 15 second sample of me playing a couple of notes with a pad type sound. I used Absynth's granular and Aetherizer functions to stretch the sound to 3 minutes."

Spectralis 2_Tribute.m4v

YouTube via RainMainDein | February 09, 2011 |

"Made for fun, hope nobody is bothered by the videocrap, its about the music, just to improve my skills with this machine and to have more different sound examples of the Spectralis in the net, I think its a great workstation, with a lot of soundpotential, not easy to learn, but unmatched for complex rythms and pseudo hardsequencing, cheers make music rainmaindein"

A Taste of Venom Demo M-Audio Avid

YouTube via FlakeStick | January 30, 2011 | Update: video re-uploaded below.

"This is a quick-n-dirty demo showing my first patches on M-Audio's new synth, the Venom. The Venom is a sound designer's dream, it lends itself to all kinds of music. Basses, strings, sci-fi, ambient, trance, trip-hop...and on-and-on. Editing the sounds makes all sorts of happy accidents possible.

All original patches in this vid are by me:
Stringer - a vintage string synth sound w/ phaser, much better than the "70's String" factory patch I must say.
JunoThis - A first, not-quite-there, attempt at Juno sounds w/ chorusing. Again better than the factory patch.
Wobbler - This is a recreation of a patch I did on the Oberheim Matrix. Sounds great on the Venom!
NebulaTrek - Inspired by the ominous sound from the first Star Trek motion picture.
StarGazer - Something completely new to me!
DeepBass - A deep house bass sound.
Eurotrashd - A sensational driving trance sound, whether triggered in one-hits or arpeggiated.

Recorded straight into Macbook w/ no additional effects - ALL VENOM."

Urei 565T Little Dipper Demo.m4v

YouTube via FlakeStick | February 02, 2010 | - new video below

"This is a quick demo of the Little Dipper audio filter. Recording straight to MacBook audio in through an Alesis Multimix 8 mixer. No other eq or effects were added. The synthesizer is a Roland Jupiter 6 (off camera) which already has a robust filter of its own. The 565T has a very gentle high and low pass curve while the notch filters are in the on position. It's the dual notch/peak filters that can really transform the sound going in. Exciting phaser effects start to happen when the notch frequencies approach each other. You can read articles online how it was designed for filtering out very isolated frequencies when no other piece of kit will do....but there's nothing like transforming your favorite instruments into something different. Definitely share any tips and tricks with me as I would love to try them "

Oberheim Matrix-6: Superbad Muchacho

YouTube via FlakeStick | July 20, 2010 | - video re-uploaded below.

"This is an un-rehearsed demo featuring the sounds of the Oberheim Matrix-6. The Matrix-6 has 6-voice polyphony and is capable of splits, aftertouch sensitive, programmable benders and 100 patches. Getting the most out of programming the Matrix-6 isn't for you lazy folk out there in need of instant gratifications, but a little bit of finger-effort on insane-membrane buttons will produce rewards beyond your wildest fantasy. Well, maybe not THAT cool, but pretty cool um-kay? The Matrix-6 is capable of many of the sonic mayhem of its big brothers the Xpander and Matrix-12. Patch programming can be done via MIDI on your favorite DAW platform. I have Cubase SX3 but never got around to mapping the parameters to the Matrix. Because you know what? Programming from the front panel isn't difficult at all so I don't know what all the fuss is about. You CAN program both benders and TWO pedals to control any parameter in the modulation matrix and store that on a PER PATCH basis. Anyway, this recording doesn't make use of any effects except for the very last song - but used some reverb judiciously in that instance. I slopped this thing together in a couple of hours so take it easy with the comments. Actually nevermind that - say whatever you muchachos want - I'm good for it. :)"
