Free Ableton Live Rack #19: "Big C's Wicked Game"

YouTube Uploaded by AfroDjMac on Aug 2, 2011

"Free Ableton Live synth made with a sample of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" and the infamous Big C. These sounds are mushed together and garnished with some Ableton effects, to create this deliciously dreamy synth. ARP Solus T by The Dole Shirt

Another great Synth T-Shirt from The Dole Shirt. If you like more subdued shirts, this is a good one. The quality is top. Be sure to check out their other Ts. Click the pics for some close-ups. This one is mine and I love it. This just might be my favorite so far.

"The electronic instrument's value is chiefly as a novelty. With greater attention on the part of the engineer to the needs of the musician, the day may not be too remote when the electronic instrument may take its place... as a versatile, powerful, and expressive instrument."

"**WATCH 1080p FOR BEST QUALITY**

Yay! NR Album Boot Camp is off to a super-hyped-up, nerds-on-fire start. This week, we started a new song-- focusing mainly on sound design and beat programming.

Here's glimpse #1 into what's going on in the lab.

PS: At 0:36, m.0 and I say the same word ("ambience") at the same exact time. I think our brains have officially melded."

Modded Synare S3X Drum Synthesizer

via this auction

"This has to be absolutely one-of-a-kind: A 1980's vintage Synare S3X Drum Synthesizer, modified to accept input from an external audio source. The trouble is, it doesn't work...

If you're not familiar with the S3X, it's pretty cool, when it works. It's an upgrade of the orginal, somewhat legendary Synare 3 (PS 3), a dual-oscillator analog synthesizer that's triggered by drum hits. Knobs on the side provide easy tweaking and routing of the oscillators, the filter, and the VCA. There's lot's of information available from the Google on the Synare S3X and some nice demos to be found on YouTube. The big improvements of the S3X over the PS3 are fourfold:

The S3X uses an external AC adapter instead of two internal 9-volt batteries.
There's an external voltage out so multiple drums can be chained together and powered by one AC adapter
The S3X has 5 adjustable presets.
The S3X can be triggered by a Synare Sequencer, which was sort of an early proto-midi type controller box.

On top of all that, the S3X being auctioned here has an additional input labeled "EXT MIC" and a switch to toggle between "PAD" and "MIC". It's a pretty ingenious mod, actually, insofar as the Synares use a small speaker under the drum pad to supply an audio source to the synth controls..."
