Todd Barton on the Buchla and Sound Synthesis

via groundloop where you'll find the full interview.

"How did you discover the Buchla?

My first encounter was with a Buchla Music Easel that my friend, Doug Leedy
handed me and let me just explore it for a few days back in the mid-1970’s.
At that time I had no idea what I was doing…just plugging in patch cords and
twisting knobs hoping to get a sound. Eventually sounds came. I was smitten
with the ability to alter timbres and create sounds from scratch.

Since I couldn’t afford a Music Easel I instead saved up and got a lovely three
panel Serge from Serge Tcherepnin in the Haight Ashbury in 1979. Still not

knowing much about synthesis I also got Allen Strange’s book, Electronic Music:
Systems, Techniques and Controls. Parts of that book helped but mainly I began
patching 4-8 hours a day.

It wasn’t until 2004 that, having a steady job as Resident Composer at the
Oregon Shakespeare Festival since 1969, I was able to save enough to finally
get a Buchla 200e system. Since then I have spent as much time as possible
plumbing its endless depths."

"Up for auction is the mighty Korg Mono/Poly. You probably know all about it so let's talk about this particular unit:
It is a european version (220v) and one of the latest model (you can tell by the PCB revision).
The unit is in very good cosmetical condition. The wooden side, which are the weak point of the beast, are here in a rather good condition (though there are some scuff on the corners). The only real esthetic flaw are the two wheel intensity knobs that are not original ones.
Electronically it is working perfectly. I have serviced and calibrated it. The filtre chipset (SSM2044) and main cpu (D8049c) are new.

And also I did some modification that improve the MonoPoly a lot:
- MG1 normal/fast speeds switch: add a fast speed mode for MG1. This allows for more metalic and FMish sound when used in FX, VCF modulation or PWM.
- VCF EG speed switch: add a fast speed mode for the VCF enveloppe. It make the enveloppe and synth snappier.
- VCA EG speed switch : same as above but applies to the VCA
- Disable the reset of the keyboard algorithm when switching in FX-Mode
- Disable the reset of MG2 when playing a new chord in arpeggiator mode"

Elektor Formant Analog Synthesizer with Keyboard

"This is an Elektor Formant synthesizer with keyboard, 5 octaves.
The device has a very clean and consists of the following modules:
- 2x ADSR
- 1x LFO
- 1x NOISE
- 1x Dual VCA
- 1x COM
- 2x VCO
- 1x VCF
- 1x VCF 24dB
- 1x RFM
- 1 x Keyboard with INTERFACE, 5 octaves

In addition, a front panel with switches and potentiometers fitted for a third VCO module, cable keyboard / synth, 3 patch cable 3.5 mm jack, and 6 pieces 3.5 mm metal plug.

The keyboard is very good, the unit is working as far as I can see that, except for the following defects:
- Some Poties scratch easily, can be solved safely
- 24dB at VCF module Q knob (slope) is not operational. The module filters otherwise, the signal comes through normal (normal VCF module works perfectly)
- RFM module with no obvious function for me (maybe not I get it too ...)

For a hobbyist, it is certainly not difficult, they back up and running modules, unfortunately I can not have time to deal with it.

Shipping in Germany 25 euros, which will be 2 heavy packages on I would prefer a pickup, I'll also receive up to 50 km."

"This 440 works perfectly and comes with one floppy disk "wine country 441--1 Performance series" and power cord. This 440 has a new floppy drive, new pads, and a new slider from Wine country. The backlight does not work but the screen is still visible. the cosmetic is average for a close to 30 year old piece of music equipment, there used to be a scratch on the face and the previous owner took a marker and colored it in (you can see this in the pic)."
