Meet the Sonic Artist Making Music with Plants: Sound Builders

Published on Sep 16, 2014 Motherboard

"In this episode of Sound Builders, we went to Los Angeles, to meet with Mileece. She's a sonic artist and environmental designer who's developed the technology to give silent seedlings a portal to their own sonic expression.

Channeling a plant's sentience into an instrument is no obvious feat. Mileece's background as an audiophile and programmer dovetailed to turn a garden into an organic medium for music. She pulls this off by attaching electrodes to leafy limbs, which conduct the bio-electric emissions coming off living plants. The micro-voltage then gets sucked into her self-authored software, turning data into ambient melodies and harmonic frequencies.

It's simply not enough for these green little squirts to just spit out noise. All this generative organic electronic music must sound beautiful, too. As a renewable energy ambassador, Mileece's larger goal behind her plant music is to enhance our relationship with nature. And if plant music can have a pleasing aesthetic articulation then hopefully we all can give a greater damn about our environment.

While some may see the paradox in an organic medium generating electronic music, Mileece does not. She sees this as a symbiotic relationship, a vital one, and one that hints to a larger relationship she's been trying to unify, which is that between humans and nature."

"The Mochika features one square and saw waveform VCO with a huge pitch range (from subsonic to ultrasonic sound), one square and triangle waveform LFO (that modulates the VCO for the vibrato effect creating old school arcade Atari-like sounds), a white noise generator that triggers the VCO and can create percussion like sounds, an 8 step Sequencer with note on/off switch, and pitch knob for each step. Also the instrument is lit with 2 super bright leds that indicates the LFO and Sequencer Rate, and 8 leds to indicate the step that is being played. Very useful when you play it on a dark stage."

VirtualCZ Casio CZ Emulator Now Available

Video previously posted here.

"Plug-in Boutique have released VirtualCZ - a new plug-in inspired by an iconic series of digital synthesisers made in the 1980s.

VirtualCZ uses Phase Distortion - which is similar to FM Synthesis but easier to program. It can make great pads, leads, bass, percussion and RAVE ORGAN sounds that will fit into a wide variety of genres. Many people fondly remember the CZ synths and they have become retro-classics that are highly sought after, having been used on countless techno, house, rave and synth-pop records in the late 80s and early 90s. Lots of artists still use them today for their unique sounds.

The synthesis engine of the original hardware is modelled in the plug-in which can load and transmit CZ SYSEX patches, but the plug-in goes beyond the hardware to offer new sound possibilities and usability features. It’s much more fun to edit, since all the important synthesis parameters have their own control. It includes things not found on the originals such as switchable envelope generators (ADSR or 8-Stage MSEG) and Unison modes.
Developed by Oli Larkin (www.olilarkin.co.uk) with graphics by Philippe Decuyper (www.eareckon.com), VirtualCZ will ship with a library of great presets offering both retro and modern sounds by Plug-in Boutique's sound designers and artists.
VirtualCZ comes in VST2, VST3, Audio Unit and AAX plug-in formats plus Standalone app for Mac and PC.

VirtualCZ is available to purchase now exclusively from www.pluginboutique.com for £59 / $99."
