Macumbista Benjolin Circuit-Bent Noise Synthesizer Rob Hordijk Design

"The Benjolin is a standalone synthesizer designed by Rob Hordijk from the Netherlands. It contains two oscillators (one LFO and one VCO), a voltage controlled filter and a circuit called a “Rungler”, which allows chaotic cross-modulation possibilities between the different parts of the circuit. Hordijk refers to the Benjolin as a circuit which has been “bent by design.”

These hand-made Macumbista Benjolins have been further customized with a patchbay, which can be used to interface with other modular synthesizers or to setup further control voltage feedback systems within the Benjolin itself, attenuators on the three control voltage input and LEDs displaying the internal state of the Rungler. This particular Benjolin has BLUE CV/audio output banana jacks and YELLOW CV input banana jacks. The BLACK banana jack is wired through the volume knob to a 6.33mm (1/4") Neutrik output jack on the back.

The patchbay of these Benjolins has banana jack connections for the square and triangle waveforms of each of the two oscillators, the Pulse Width Modulation output of the two oscillators, the Rungler output, the XOR (exclusive/or) logic operation of the two oscillators and the output of the filter.

There are also banana jack control voltage inputs with attenuators for the frequency of each of the two oscillators and the filter cutoff frequency. The layout of the panel is designed to be both intuitive and playable (unlike many EuroRack modules, for example…). And finally, the three output bits of the Rungler have been visualized with red, green and blue LEDs.

All Benjolins use a Neutrik 6.3mm (1/4″) output jack, an additional GROUND banana jack to interface with other modular systems and a 12 VAC “wall wart” power supply (mainland European and North American versions available).

"In this video the Altair 8800 is used as a generator and controller.
The RAM is dumped out to the serial port with the aid of an assembly (player) program loaded into pROM.
The data comes out at 9600 Baud N81and it is interpreted by 8 oscillators that set their frequency accordingly.
The sense switches OR the data so note can be shifted and set at different intervals.
Sound programming on MaxMSP, Altair Programming with WS editor and ASM assembler.

The data in RAM can be recorded using an handy converter for Max, let be degraded by turning off/on the computer, or play back the true random junk that pop ups in RAM whenever the Altair is turned on.

Interesting whole tone nuances in some points."

"The keyboard is in great condition, has been used in my studio for the last 10 years. All the pots and faders are in full working order and crackle free. It was serviced about a year ago and had the internal memory battery replaced. There are a couple of minor cosmetic scratches and dinks which I have shown in the photos but otherwise it's in perfect condition.

The standard unit does not have MIDI connectors but uses DCB as its control protocol. I am also including my Roland MD-8 MIDI/DCB interface - this means that you can control it with MIDI or use it to control other MIDI devices. It's an invaluable box as it makes the Juno-60 completely MIDI compatible! The MD-8 is in full working order but does have some cosmetic damage, again shown in the photos. It's damage because I made a couple of holes in the side to mount it in a rack. Comes with a 1M DCB cable to connect the MD-8 to the Juno-60."

"This is a true complex 2 voice patch. Severeal modulation, i used a midimplant to control the system with my monomachine. Basically all modules are in action except the 2 VCS&H and the quantizer. The trick of this patch is that each joystick are controlling the filter frequency of the voices, obviusly if you would dramatic playing the joystick the sound would be very inestable -but this is not bad-."
