Boss DR-202 "Simmons" Toms in Synthwave
Published on Apr 16, 2018 tiergrinder
"Here is a small quick demo that I made using a DR-202 for the electronic tom sounds for a synthwave track.
This is a response to a question that I got on my Enter The Fury video, where I was asked does the DR-202 really do the toms?
On that track the 202 does the sequencing for the intro synth line, but I replied that DR-202 is capable for nice "Simmons" tom sounds too and promised to make a quick demo.
I programmed the same tom patterns in the DR-202's internal sequencer and tuned the preset toms to match the tuning that I have on my "go to" Simmons samples. I wanted DR-202 to do all the drums so I programmed simple kick, snare, hihat and ride patterns to drive the track. Nothing too spectacular because the toms were the main point.
I recorded DR-202 dry without any external FX or EQ. When I recorded the drums, only instrument that was playing was the 202. I counted the bars and made the simple variations and break for the "track". Other parts were later added around this dry drum track.
For that reason the break is bit odd because I left the snare un muted and it pounds away through the break :D
That is also the reason why the drum sound volumes are bit all over the place.
Normally I would multitrack record every part on their own track, but here I just recorded all the drums from main outs as a mono mix to keep things honest, so there is no going back for level adjusting.
Sorry that I got carried away with the flanger, but you know.. It's so easy to end up over tweaking and forget what you were actually doing :D"
Making music live on DIY synths

"Making music on the DIY synths, two Tokarev Protosynth V1LPs running the pads and a Protosynth V2 prototype grooving with the bassline. Running loop in the FL Studio, sending MIDI notes to the synths. Audio output from synths gets processed by some dynamics and effects vst processors on the computer."

Sun - Featuring Peter Zinovieff of EMS
Published on Jul 19, 2017 NUSTEM
This performance was during the Rainwire [Processed] installation at University of Hull by Noyzelab.
"Poet Katrina Porteous and composer Peter Zinovieff collaborated to produce a planetarium experience of live poetry, wrap-around visuals, and surround-sound music. The piece is an artistic response to the work of Northumbria University's Solar Physics Research Group.
Sun premiered at Newcastle's Life Science Centre planetarium on November 18th 2016.
This version was produced for follow-on performances, and for YouTube. For more background about the piece, and the wider context of the Imagining the Sun project of which this was part, see: https://nustem.uk/imagining-the-sun/"
"Imagining the Sun is a collaboration of a poet, a sound artist and a visual artist with Northumbria University’s solar physics research group, supported by the outreach specialists at NUSTEM. The project challenges public and schools audiences to explore how approaches from art and science can complement and inform each other. Alongside the schools programme sit a series of public performances and exhibitions."
---
Peter Zinovieff, of course, was the founder of EMS.
"A scientist, composer, librettist and pioneer of electronic music, in the 1960s Peter was one of the first people in the world to use a computer to create music.
With David Cockerell and Tristram Cary he formed Electronic Music Studios, which created some of the earliest electronic instruments, including the seminal VCS3.
Peter’s instruments – and particularly the techniques he pioneered, like sampling – continue in widespread use."

Patchwerks Signals 2018 Seattle Synth Meet Pics

Some pics from this year's Signals Synth Meet hosted by Patchwerks in Seattle, WA. Hover over the image and click on the right arrow to flip through pics.
Roland showed their new System 500 eurorack modules by Malekko, it is now official. Industrial Music Elecectronics, aka The Harvestman, had their new Piston Honda mkII with built-in graphic display. Synthwerks, a Seattle native, were showing their modules. As is tradition, a ton of people brought their own gear to share with others. You'll spot a Fairlight from synthroom.com (click through for a great shot of the system at Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada), an EMS SYNTHI, a DATO DUO and some old school rotary phones (not sure what they did as I didn't get a chance to check them out), some alternative/diy controllers, and of course plenty of eurorack, 5U (John L Rice), and Buchla modular. Also the only MATRIXSYNTH military hat in existence! :) It's owned by Larry Kleinke, aka Computer Controlled, who had the Roland gear, white Korg Arp Odyssey desktop, and Abstrakt Instruments Avalon.
