Sampler trick: how to create multi-length “tape loops” (shown on Digitakt/Model Samples by Elektron)

"This video explains a neat little sampler trick that lets you create music by *ignoring* a sampler’s sequencer.

In the early 60’s groundbreaking composer Steve Reich (https://www.stevereich.com/) pioneered the technique of using different length tape loops (and later musical patterns) in composition. The idea is that two short loops, either identical but one slightly shorter than the other, or completely different, drift in and out of phase to create textures, patterns and rhythms that weren’t there before. This tape loop technique is used by William Basisnki (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5s-K... ) to create wonderful sonic soundscapes, and in the lovely “Walkman Symphony” by Amulets (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVon_...)

In this video I replicate the experience digitally by using a little trick which ignores the sequencer on modern day samplers, in order to create similar multi-length loop textures and patterns.

It turns out some samplers (like Elektron Digitakt and Model:Samples shown in this video) will let sample-loops play continuously, regardless of whether the sequencer is active or not . As long as you DON’T use the built-in sequencer to retrigger the samples, and you create different length loops, the samples will loop in and out of phase with each other and recreate the phasing tape loop experience quite nicely. In these particular samplers, all the effects and LFOs are still fully functional despite the sequencer not running, so you can use them while your loops are running.

A huge thanks to Yehezkel Raz for turning me on to these composers and for playing the sample you hear in the Digitakt portion of this beautiful Danksi song:

Tangerine Dream's "Vengeance" from Sorcerer (1977) on the Baloran The River synthesizer

Published on Mar 3, 2019 Sean Christopher - Evoking Emotion Through Music

"I thought I'd see if the Baloran The River synth was good with vintage sounds, and IMO it definitely delivered. 'Vengeance' is a track by Tangerine Dream on the 1977 film, Sorcerer.

Sorcerer is a 1977 American thriller film directed and produced by William Friedkin and starring Roy Scheider, Bruno Cremer, Francisco Rabal, and Amidou. The second adaptation of Georges Arnaud's 1950 French novel Le Salaire de la peur. The plot depicts four outcasts from varied backgrounds meeting in a South American village, where they are assigned to transport cargoes of aged, poorly kept dynamite that is so unstable that it is 'sweating' its dangerous basic ingredient, nitroglycerin.

Hopefully you enjoyed this track as much as I had making it."

As it was foretold. Korg Prophecy vs Eventide H8000

Published on Mar 3, 2019 Frequency Manipulator

"The classic Korg Prophecy synthesiser with the almighty Eventide H8000 effects beast. I recently plugged the Prophecy back in. It is a well specified instrument. Unique oscillator sources, waveshaping, two filters, plenty of modulation. About four tracks of prophecy into verbs and pitch shifters.

I hope they don't mind, their laser is badass."

"Up for sale is a hard to find vintage Moog Sonic Six synthesizer. It's the later version with 4-pole Moog ladder filter which has the fattest sound. In our opinion the Sonic Six is the best sounding portable vintage Moog ever made. It's really, really an amazing synth!

This Sonic Six is been serviced in June 2018. The service report is part of the sale. Everything is working fine. Cosmetically it's in very nice condition as well. All the original knobs are there, the front panel is extremely clean, the keys are looking good and so on. The hardcase has signs of use: some scratches, wear and tear and the latches are have little rusty spots on them. Please check all the photos to get a complete overall impression of the condition.

The brochure (1974) and instruction book by Thomas L. Rhea (1972) are included in the sale. The Sonic Six is working on 230v. A power cord with European plug is included. The serial number is: 1653."

"more about - http://vtol.cc/filter/works/Poise-d

Poise→[d] is a hybrid installation that uses chemical and physical reactions to control its behaviour and sound synthesis. The installation consists of the main control unit and three balancing robots. The main control unit has three core systems where the reactions occur, with everything analysed by a computer algorithm using cameras.

This project is based on self-organising structures viewed from several different angles. All the three robots are connected to the main control unit and represent through sound and movement one of the three processes that are happening. The first robot is connected to a sound/mechanical process, the second one to a thermodynamic reaction, and the third to a chemical reaction. Taken together, they create a new and more complex system, as they affect each other through the movements of robots and the main algorithm. To a certain extent, this hybrid system consisting of robotised kinetic objects and chemical/physical reactions is symptomatic of pre-biotic chemical evolution. Another important aspect is the use of Belousov-Zhabotinsky’s chemical reaction - owing to its complexity and singularity, fascinating studies were conducted on cybernetics and some scientists were even enthused to create a chemical computing machine. In this project, the reaction is the most important component of the algorithmic process of the entire installation."
