Mini Systems 002: SSF ZPO, Rossum Linnaeus, and the Digitakt!

Patchwerks Seattle

"In this video resident expert Jesse Humes takes us on a shuffle trip with his Intellijel Palette case full of excellent modules and the Elektron Digitakt. Featuring the SSF Zero Point Oscillator, Rossum Linnaeus, and the Intellijel Multi-FX 1U.

Rossum LINNAEUS is a stereo state variable filter that provides the unique ability to linearly modulate its resonant frequency through zero into negative frequency, while maintaining stability. With extensive voltage control of nearly every parameter, Linnaeus lets you manipulate the filter’s natural response curve in new ways, to create both subtle and dramatic timbral effects. And with a “one-knob-per-parameter” interface, LINNAEUS inspires sonic creativity that invites (and rewards) real-time interaction.

The Zero Point Oscillator is not your typical analog VCO or even your standard Thru-Zero FM VCO for that matter. The core of the ZPO was developed through countless hours of experimentation involving Through-Zero modulation techniques. Through-Zero FM is a form of frequency modulation that produces much deeper and useful FM tones than a typical VCO can accomplish. New techniques have been discovered that not only improve the performance of TZFM, but also grant additional benefits as will be explained.

The Intellijel Multi-FX 1U provides three carefully crafted and highly musical sounding delay based FX in a compact 1U package. Powerful on its own but even more fun as part of a bigger effects chain.

Three FX modes:
DELAY – tap/clock syncable, controls for rate/division, tone (feedback low pass filtering), and feedback amount.
CHORUS – controls for modulation rate, tone (brightness) and modulation depth.
PLATE REVERB – controls for pre-delay, tone (brightness), and decay time.
Stereo Wet/Dry balance for all three FX modes.

Short Performance on Buchla Easel Command w/ Sensel Morph 01

Sensel

"The Buchla Easel Command has an optional USB Host that makes it easy to plug in a Sensel Morph. This performance uses the Ableton Live Looper to build the composition. There are several interesting mappings the Easel with Thunder allows:

* Timbre Control with up/down slides
* Modulation Control with bottom hex pad
* Sequence Control with top right buttons
* Envelope Control with velocity
* Pitch Bend with left/right slides

Introduction to Buchla Easel Command and Sensel Morph: A Complete Tutorial.

"The Buchla Easel Command (208C) has an option of a USB Host. You can even buy a bundle with the Sensel Morph and legendary Thunder overlay. But how do you use it?
This video covers basic patching techniques on the Easel Command, focusing on using the gestures from the Morph to control the sound. Without getting too far in the weeds, you can learn how to get some really complex sounds and controls with just a few patch cords. Buchla made an amazing instrument - now it's your turn to make amazing music!"

Yamaha CS Series (1978)

"Waaaa... waa aa a aaa a!" Here’s something to warm your heart: Sit back and enjoy this wonderful clip from an NHK educational show featuring two legendary Yamaha synthesizers: The compact CS-10, and the almighty CS-80 in the second half of the video. So what’s going on in the beginning? Using a microphone, the hosts voice is routed through the filter of the synth and is being modulated in frequency, resulting in the robotic voice. 🤖 🎹
