Contraption

video upload by nbor

"Gearing up for Wednesday's monthly in dt San Jose. I've been trying to make the most of the small synths, as it makes for a very portable situation. With only one effect on one sound, it is all very close to the circuits and raw.

Production notes: A dawless jam run on battery power alone. Roland SH-01A, Korg Volca FM, Meeblip Geode, @1010music Blackbox, and Sensel Morph. The Roland is going through a @MerisUs LVX delay. I found the cheap and compact "G-MARK" mixer from AliExpress for frighteningly cheap. It does a darn decent job, and is crazy small.

There are a couple battery packs - a 150Wh and a 99Wh. I ended up using the 2nd because the blackbox was making too much USB noise when everything was plugged into the 150Wh. There was still quite a bit of noise, but the Izotone RX-8 does a good job cleaning that out."

Chasing Ghosts

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Hi All,
It's been a while since my last video and it will take a while to get back into the routine. I came down with a flu from hell and I've been out of order for two weeks. It's the first time since 2020 and I can't remember flu hitting this hard, not being able to sleep, eat, listen to modulars or watching TV. I tested negative on Covid-19, but maybe it's Covid-24. Who knows.

On January 30 I posted the 'Where's the Easel' video. I made a decision to go for Eurorack in 2020 and 'never' wander Buchla's official banana path. So while it's easier to just buy an Easel, spending $6K in a different universe is just not an option. So the Quest continues.

This is a video full of dead ends. I was pretty convinced I could approximate the Buchla with Endorphin.es Shuttle System and the Sensel Morph controller but only got one aspect of it. Using the Beatstep Pro only confirmed how important that Electronic Music Box touch keyboard is.

It confirmed how close the Shuttle is to the Easel Command, and yet so far away. I thought the Verbos Touch Keyboard would be a solution, but it was not. I found a used one, but it felt unresponsive and didn't track pitch. Fortunately I managed to calibrate it, but my fingers and touchplates are not compatible.

Again, tunnel vision made me completely overlook the Buchla LEM 218E V3 touch keyboard - which now comes with Eurorack outputs on the side. So I took a leap of faith and ordered the 218E. Hopefully the Quest comes to an end just before March, hoping the Easel is more than a Eurorack ghost. Speaking of Ghosts, I also tried to fit the Endorphin.es Ghost delay in the Shuttle, another dead end, which are actually u-turns. This was a tough video to make for many reasons and it felt like chasing ghosts. It's all over the place. But I think I am getting somewhere now, and learned a lot."

Sensel to Discontinue Hardware Controllers

via Sensel

"As of May 5th, 2022, Sensel is discontinuing all hardware production runs indefinitely for the Morph and Morph accessories. We will continue to provide support through the end of July 2022. Read the official announcement here."

Announcement follows:

Sensel Morph Sunset

MAY 04, 2022 POSTED BY: MARK ROSENBERG
Ever since we sold out of Morphs in 2021, many of you have been eagerly awaiting updates about the availability of the Sensel Morph. Today, we can provide some closure and announce that unfortunately, Sensel will no longer be producing the current Morph.

Like many of you, we feel like we were able to only scratch the surface of the potential of the Morph, and we’re disappointed that we can no longer produce it. Production challenges were myriad: the unavailability of what was once a widely available microprocessor, the lack of supply of the resistive ink that was used for the Morph’s pressure sensor, travel restrictions, and internal competition with the rapidly growing demand for Sensel’s enterprise solutions.

Over the past year, we explored many avenues to restart production: pitching investors, partnering with other music companies, creative arrangements with high-volume manufacturers, and redesigning the Morph. In the end, we had to make the difficult decision to shift our focus to our core enterprise business, especially in the laptop touchpad market. Sensel’s technology is currently being used in the haptic touchpads of Lenovo’s X1 Titanium Yoga and Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Studio, and will be featured in several other models in the near future. We’re thrilled to enable the next generation haptic touchpads for Windows laptops, and to get our tech into the hands of millions of users.

For those of you who backed the Morph on Kickstarter or purchased one after, we sincerely thank you for being a part of the Sensel journey and helping us get to where we are today. We still can’t wait to see what you create. And for those who signed up for our back-in-stock notifications while we’ve been sold out, we apologize for the long wait and for not being able to fulfill your requests.

Making the Morph and seeing what creative people could do with it was incredibly rewarding. From the same controller, we saw virtuosic finger drum jams, slick productions, tripped out visuals, and interactive installations. The creative minds that got behind the Morph were just awesome. As we move forward with our enterprise business, we hope to influence those markets with what we’ve learned, and work with innovative tool-makers to bring the creativity and richness-of-interaction of the Morph to everyday consumer devices like laptops and phones.

Down the road, we will also rethink the Morph product line and potentially bring another consumer product to market. While there are no plans to do so right now, we welcome all feedback and suggestions.

You may have questions about how we intend to support the Morph moving forward. Please visit our Morph Sunset FAQ page for our end-of-life policies.

With appreciation,
The Sensel Team"

Music By Hand

video upload by nbor

"A solo performance on a fascinating instrument. Each finger connects to the pitch, filter, and pan of a simple sawtooth oscillator in Pure Data. The pitch is quantized to a scale mode. Reverb is added, based on the distance of contacts. It's incredibly sensitive, and a joy to play, like giving a sonic massage. I hope you enjoy this performance!"

Unstable Articulations

video upload by nbor

"Intending to just try some things out, I ended up indulging in an extended jam, then doing some overdubs. Although it's a very different sound and structure, I'm pulling influence from early 70's Miles Davis, which so often pulls off that psychedelic miasma vibe so well. YouTube is really not the best place for this type of music, I suppose, but it will have to do.
I didn't capture the guitar work on video, but got everything else. The guitar is so heavily processed and only occasionally appears, so it doesn't really add much to show it. Once again the Bucha Easel Command is featured. Some pings from the modular, and drums on the 1010 Blackbox, the Thunder is used to play Newfangled Generate synth. Everything was refined in Bitwig, quickly mastered with Newfangled Elevate.

The drums are one of the several drum kits you can download for Blackbox:

Taming the Beast

video upload by nbor

"I built two 84hp cases to condense a variety of eurorack modules and small cases into a unified instrument. It is all functioning now, so I'm starting to create with it. Here are my first efforts to make sense of what I have, a mid-tempo techno improv. Several euclidean rhythms and random voltages are driving this, along with interaction on the Sensel Morph."

Spectral Shiatsu Max For Live - touching your way through the spectrum

video upload by Sensel

"This unique Max for Live device relies on your touches and their pressure on the Morph to reveal the different frequencies of a sound from different times of a sound recording. Rather than using different buttons to create notes, each contact on the Sensel Morph reveals parts of a sound's frequency spectrum, playing short loops. These are some examples of different sounds and effects that can be achieved with this instrument." Tangible Frequencies with Spectral Shiatsu Max for Live: Overview and Tutorial

Getting Started with the Sensel Morph and Vital Synthesizer MPE

video by Sensel

"In a presentation style influenced by Cuckoo's mirror, Peter takes a deep dive into creating a MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) preset in Vital from @Matt Tytel. Starting from scratch, we create a very basic wavetable from a sample, and stretch, modulate and tweak until we achieve an other-worldly sound design under our fingers.

This doesn't cover every single detail, but is a complete walkthrough from patch initialization to a richly modulated and effected sound design.

Patina of Purity

video by nbor

"After spending sometime making some presets for sonicLAB Fundamental (a very unusual activity, as you bathe in sine waves), I wondered how they might fit into a musical piece. I joined an odd patch with Audio Damage Phosphor and Arturia Buchla Easel V as they seemed appropriate. Phosphor is all additive synthesis of sine tones, and the Buchla Easel is just....great. I enjoy the contrast of the chaos from Fundamental and slow tones from the others. Overdubs played on t.he Sensel Morph, using MPE"

Sensel Morph Firmware 0.19.295 Update: Pitch and Velocity

video by Sensel

"The firmware update to 0.19.295 has some really interesting new ways of handling pitch-bend and improvements to velocity scaling. We go through the details on how to set up and understand these two key features.

0:00 New Firmware Overview
0:21 MPE Pitch-bend Rounding Improvements
6:57 Velocity Range Improvements

Change log:
• Improved "Jump" pitch-rounding mode for MPE so that it quickly settles to the note of the area under your finger. This vastly improves the tuning of pitch-shifted chords, and introduces some incredible pitch shift effects when using a custom-created (Innovator’s) grid overlay.
• Added mode to allow velocity range to allow for lower limits. Accessed via “Threshold 10”. When you choose "Threshold 10", the low end velocities (less than 30) are now transmitted, and the activation force threshold is set to 3.
• When using the Drum Pad Overlay Y controls, the 0-127 values are scaled to fit each pad’s size.
• Fixed pitch-bend bugs for single channel MIDI (previously, pitch bend could be on a channel different from the note)
• Notes that are set to “off” are no longer transposed when the octave or scene up/down Morph modifiers are used.
• Note off is no longer sent when you shift octaves/scenes.
•Refined hit size of the Buchla Thunder Overlay’s areas and fixed missed notes on the Buchla Overlay, particularly on pads 1-9.
• Fixed wrap-around bug with pitch-bend (most noticed on drum overlay with bend set to Absolute). Previously, when a pad was set to Absolute pitch bend, the value could jump very high or low at the edges.
• The Morph now has better handling of note-off, deprecating the need for All * Notes Off messages when overlays are removed. As a result, no All Notes Off message is sent when an overlay is removed.
• Fixed horizontal scroll command (Video Editing Overlay)
• Mouse click now resets to “up” when “no overlay” is in Trackpad mode and an overlay is placed on the Morph. Previously, this could often result in a stuck mouse, causing hair to be removed from one’s head."

Sensel and SonalSystem present; Analog Essentials MPE

video by Sensel

"Analog Essentials was created by the pros at SonalSystem. It is a deep collection of chromatically sampled synthesizers, arranged into presets for Ableton Live 10 & 11 as well as Logic Pro X 10.5.

Vintage synthesizers and modern eurorack creations were processed and sampled for every note and meticulously prepared for Live and Logic Samplers into instrument racks that give you immediate and full control over variation and mix. The resulting sounds emanate a vintage, “video shack soundtrack” vibe that is hard to resist.

MPE is mapped for each preset, offering full expressive control over all sounds, bringing all the character and richness of analog into a modern, powerful format. (Note: Live 10 has no MPE mappings). In total, the sound pack includes 60+ Presets for Leads, Bass, Pads, and Drones, 3000+ sample files (with loop points in meta data), and 9+ GB of pure sonic bliss.

On sale for just $39 for the next two weeks ($59 MSRP)!

Techtonics Sound Set for Live 11 and Bitwig Studio

video by Sensel

"Techtonics features presets for the newly released Ableton Live 11 and Bitwig Studio 3.3+. It offers dark sounds, gritty textures, and rich harmonics that were sampled from analog synths like the Moog Subharmonicon, Meeblip Geode, and Buchla Music Easel. Included are 13 Sampler synths, over 60 polyrhythmic loops, five drum racks of percussion and bass kits, and a full kit of 16 unique kick drums. The result is a veritable construction kit for modern techno-derived genres that rely heavily on rhythm.

Beyond great sounds, Techtonics has many creative uses of MPE. For example, the vertical "slide" gesture on the "Kits" is used to create a "rim" at the top of all the pads, when played with a 4x4 grid. This rim adds a distortion, effect, filter, or other variation to the pad.

On sale for just $39 for the next two weeks ($59 MSRP)!
