4/9/26 Metasonix RK7 RK2 RK8 + Beers Melakarta & DAC + ALM Pamela’s New Workout + Alesis MIDIVERB II

video upload by Cfpp0

This is the first post to feature the Beers Melakarta.

"Feeding the Beers DAC and Beers Melakarta several triggers from ALM Pamela’s New Workout, and then modulating the pitches of the two Metasonix RK7 VCOs and the CV on the Metasonix RK8 Filterwall. Gated reverb from the Alesis MIDIVERB II."

"The idea for this module came from my friend Rodrigo Kendrick. He was a bit burned out on western tonal structures, and had recently missed out on an electronic lehra machine in a facebook marketplace deal which fell through. These machines are a kind of practice tool for carnatic musicians that plays a wide variety of different raga. Think that 'casio auto-chord' function on old casio keyboards, but for carnatic music.

Unwilling to wait for another one to come up on the used market, he did some cursory research, and sent me an early-morning design document, expanding the functionality of DAC with a scheme of two rotary switches and one toggle switch to select the pitch sets for all 72 Melakarta ragas and specified a clock input that would run up and down the selected raga in ascending then descending order, with the ability to turn around or reset on command. In theory this would allow the complex rhythmic and sequence rules of the raga to be implemented with external logic and sequencers, but still give the module enough sequencing functionality to explore the pitch sets of these raga on it's own.

I got excited and went a bit silly 'helping' until we had shoehorned in a pile of other features like binary addressability of the selected swara (interval), gate outputs for each swara, an 'inhibit' input that mutes the transposition voltage while the clock continues in the background, CV controlled halving of the clock frequency, extra +1oct input, and the logic-inverting toggle switches from the DAC on several inputs.

This design is all analogue using discrete MOSFETs and 0.1% tolerance resistors in a weighted DAC driven by a 4000-series CMOS based sequencer.

Yes, it might have been simpler to use a microcontroller."

XenoMorph II - MakeNoise Polymorphism with NUSS and Morphagene

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"Five years ago, I already played with the idea of expanding the Morphagene into a shapeshifting creature. I used two Phonogenes to process the Morph's L and R outputs, inspired by a lo-fi Ciat-Lonbarde Cocoquantus. It was a fun experiment. This Xenomorph is different, a worthy V2. It's a custom 104 HP system I designed as a synth I did not know how to make:

Morphagene
Mult
MultiMod
PoliMaths
QXG x 2
X-PAN
Mimeophon

When used in a skiff, X-PAN is replaced by X-OH (output) and a mult. If you have stackables, you can even use the new GTE. The idea is to bring the stereo Morphagene OUTS together with the QXG outs, so you'll need to stack/mult one Morph out into MultiMod.

The 7U case obviously has the CV bus and - can / could - contain the regular NUSS layout AND the Xenomorph Granular NUSS system. Together they could hold two universes which makes it Multiversal (NMSS) which logically brought me to the name 'Nemesis'. We often assiciate that name with something bad, but after a bit of research it translates to 'the force that reveals your limitations'. So when we meet our Nemesis, the only thing we need to do is grab another patchcable and say 'why stop here?' bla, bla, bla.
Seriously. This is an amazing layout.

Even though MultiMod was never intended for audio, again it's my favorite way to use it, and now it's the core of this setup. It will take the L[mono[ channel of Morphagene as an input so it will create eight roughly independent tentacles. MultiMod has a NUSS header on the back, so without any cable clutter it connects to QXG's audio in and PoliMaths will do the envelopes. So I am basically replacing the MultiWAVE for Morph + Mod as the new sound engine.

I did not realize I'd be getting a genuine granular synth on steroids. A workstation."

"Up for grabs is a white UDO DMNO in like new condition. Comes with all manuals and UK power cable. Seller used briefly before putting back into the box. This is a fantastic new design approach from UDO with equally fantastic sounding filters to boot. Imagine Oberheim Xpander-type filter types with a Roland-style flavor, multiple types of FM, and numerous voicing modes, and you're just starting to get an idea of the power of this synth."

"Beautiful and powerful extended virtual analogue polysynth module. With original manual and UK power supply. Looking practically unused - possibly because this one had an encoder issue which Mayer sorted by immediate replacement. Fantastic displays, seriously informative. Altogether a very pretty and good-sounding synth. Maybe still available new (typical UK price 2950GBP) but actually everywhere seems to be sold out. Packing 12GBP."
