Walkthrough : creating a chiptune track, rendered by dual SIDs

video upload by MIDI IN

"This week I've made this tune, which I'm very happy with. Rather than just post the music I thought I'd break it down and explain this particular technique for creating this kind of music using my DAW. The music is rendered using two modern replacement SIDs in my MIDISID."

Music Thing Modular: Workshop System workshop | 29 April 2026

video upload by Signal Sounds

"We were delighted to welcome Music Thing Modular’s Tom Whitwell to our Glasgow showroom recently for an evening exploring his Workshop System - a compact, self-contained modular synthesiser in a portable case.

Tom is the brains behind the classic Turing Machine and a host of other brilliant DIY modules. If you’ve heard any of his regular appearances on the Why We Bleep podcast, you’ll know he’s full of fascinating ideas about the worlds of electronic music and instrument design, so this was a cracking evening for anyone even vaguely interested in synths.

Tom chatted about the design process for the Workshop System, showed some example patches and discussed its unique Computer module - which is now also available standalone - as well as answering questions from the audience.

"TWO MINUTES WITH OORA
A Manifesto

This is not content.
This is not a demo.
This is not a track.
This is a moment.

RULES

→ Two minutes only.
No extension. No exception.
Time is the frame.

→ One take.
What happens, happens.
Mistakes are part of the record.

→ No presets.
Every session starts from silence.
Memory lives in the hands, not in machines.

KordBot Firmware update tour...

video upload by Isla Electronics

"I'm delighted to finally be able to give you a tour of the soon to be released firmware update for your beloved KordBot.

Rather than a full end to end feature example I've tried to keep this as short as possible to just walk around all the new features and improvements.

This should be released to the public sometime next week after some initial private beta testing is complete to make sure we don't blow up your KordBot ;)

as always, come and join the discussion at http://forum.islaelectronics.com

big love!

I also want to give a plug to Georgy at Musician Paradise, purveyor of the finest midi chord progression packs who has graciously donated hundreds of song starter chord progressions that will be included in the firmware. check him out over at

Why He traveled to Budapest to talk about Eurorack with Doboz | Sound Mechanic 03

"| Sound Mechanics of Eurorack Composition - Part 1 |

In this video, I sit down with MΓ‘tΓ© SzabΓ³, the mind behind Doboz Modular.

I traveled to Budapest, where MΓ‘tΓ© designs and builds his instruments, to talk about Eurorack, the process of creating a modular synth module, and why it can sometimes be challenging to think of a modular system as a traditional musical instrument.

We also discuss MΓ‘tΓ©'s latest creation: DVNA, a compact standalone synthesizer featuring a monophonic voice with paraphonic chord output, designed to bring expressive harmonic control into a portable format.

BURHANS TIMBRE 1

"Multi function module for creating timbre, simple or complex CV/gate patterns and pseudo random noise."

via nonlinearcircuits

This module can be used in a number of ways:

Timbre generator

CV Pattern generator/sequencer

Controllable pseudo-random noise generator

It is based on ideas presented in an AES article by Ralph W. Burhans

Using the switches, pots and signal input, you can create patterns as simple or as complex as you like.

It is not a 6 stage sequencer as most settings enable more than one channel to be active at once and the CV output is a sum of the voltages set by the pots connected to the active stages.

The switches enable extremely long patterns to be generated. The signal input allows you to change and randomise patterns on the fly, but it fun to flick the switches back’n’forth (centre is off); sometimes you might even return to a previous pattern. It is also fun to feedback a gate output into the signal input to create shorter loops that can be altered with the switches as well.

As a timbre generator, it can add harmonics to sine waves or step in and out of pseudo random noise as the signal and/or clock are CV controlled. It might be good to feed the output to a VCF to smooth some of the edges, but it depends on how noisy you want it.
