Novation Bass Station Custom Patches HD part 1

YouTube via ChrisSpazz — April 30, 2010 — "The Novation Bass Station rack is a pretty powerful analog synth in a relatively small package. One thing Youtube is lacking is a decent demo of it, with direct audio, so I thought I would contribute my own complete with custom patches I made.

I have no keyboard skills at all and I chose the Akai LPK25 for this video because of the small size & arpeggiator feature.

I'll be uploading many more synth demos in the next while so be sure to subscribe."

Dub Step Arcade Now Available

Kits are now available at The Magic Mess

"The Dub~Step~Arcade console is an analogue square wave synthesiser based around two popular oscillator circuit’s, Firstly the dub-siren which is simply a pitch that rises and falls in relation to the speed and wave-shape of an LFO (low frequency oscillator), and secondly the stepped tone generator by Forrest Mims (Known as the Atari punk console) hence the name Dub Step Arcade!
The design also incorporates basic synthesiser features such as Attack-Decay Envelope generator and LFO Modulator.

The Dub~step~arcade is available as a D-I-Y kit for you to build yourself. All The electronic components as well as pots, knobs, switches and jack sockets are provided for the following controls
1 ~ main oscillator pitch control
2 ~ modulation depth with LFO-(square/triangle) or AD gen select
3 ~ steps control with lfo-square/triangle modulation select
4 ~ attack and decay envelope generator with fire and auto repeat
5 ~ LFO modulator with speed control with square / triangle wave-shapes
6 ~ VCA level control with manual constant setting or A/D gen source select
7 ~ Control voltage input (controls the main oscillators frequency)
8 ~ Trigger input (envelope can be triggered by external sequencer)
9 ~ 9V battery or 9V power option

The kit comes with the ability to be powered by either battery or by 9Vdc from a transformer (with a 500ma rating). The design has a voltage regulator (9v) to protect against wrong polarity and as voltage supply effects pitch and volume. I recommend using rechargeable battery's or transformer supply as the current consumption can be quite high so battery life is short."

Numerology 3 Teaser: Evolve from Five12 on Vimeo.

"Early testing of the Evolve function. The setup shown has pitch changes on X, gate changes on Y and velocity changes on Z. Transformations for each dimension (X, Y, Z) are fully customizable. In addition to manual triggering, this example shows triggering via three sequencers, one for each dimension."

1Song1Week1Year - Week18 - Set01 B

YouTube via DJDJSMusic — May 01, 2010 — "Week 18 in my project to write one new song every week for the year 2010.

I noticed a few weeks ago that most of my songs only take 3 or 4 layers on the Tenori-On and I thought to myself as the Tenori-On has 16 layers would it not be possible to program in 3-4 songs into one set of blocks and fade up and down the layers for each song in order to create one longer "mix" track. Also as it takes so long to load each user sample set you could allocate the 48 samples (3 voices x16 samples each) among your 4 songs and end up with a set of blocks that could give you a continuous 20-30 minuets of playing. Or even longer if you start mixing and mashing up your songs.

So that is what I am going with Set01 -I know it's a great title:)

Last week I used the first 4 layers for Set01 A and this week I'm using the next 4 layers for Set01 B. - I've changes all layers to Score mode.
I've also used the bass line from Set01 A in this so there are 5 layers used in this song."

FutureRetro Revolution mk2 Demo (Pattern Mode)

YouTube via stealthgear — April 30, 2010 — "Here I show you the features and sounds in pattern mode, first playing the intro to After Forever's "Follow in the Cry". All sound is coming from this machine, including FX (center) and distortion (switch on the back). The future retro lets you chain & loop up to 16 patterns while still playing in pattern mode! (hold down first pattern then push the ending pattern) It also has song sequencing mode, which I didn't go into.

Overall I really like this machine and I think its cooler than the x0xb0x."

RIP Walter Sear

photo by adriana trujillo via ZU33

We lost another synth pioneer. Walter Sear passed away yesterday. He was currently running Sear Sound NYC. Some synth related snips via Wikipedia:

"Walter E. Sear (1930-2010) was an American recording engineer, instrument importer, instrument designer, inventor, composer, tuba player, movie producer, synthesizer pioneer, and vintage recording equipment guru. Since 1970 he ran the legendary Sear Sound recording studio in New York City, which is known for its vast collection of vintage analog recording gear and is patronized by bands such as Sonic Youth, Steely Dan, Wynton Marsalis, and Paul McCartney...

Sear started out his long and varied career as a classical tuba player. After 4 years at the Curtis Institute of Music, he landed a job as principal tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He later was a freelancer in New York City, playing for 6 years with the Radio City Music Hall pit orchestra as well as The Symphony of the Air, The Goldman Band, Sound of Music and numerous commercial studio dates...

In the late 50's he became friendly with Robert Moog after buying parts from him for a homemade Theremin. In the early 60's, Sear used his music industry connections to become Moog's sales agent and business partner. He encouraged Moog to make his synths more practical, eventually leading, in the late 60's, to the development of portable synthesizers which could be used in live performance. Sear also became known as a performer and composer on the Moog synthesizer for various movie soundtracks including Midnight Cowboy...

He built his first recording studio in 1964 as one of the first commercial electronic music studios. Sear Sound is the oldest recording studio in New York City, and boasts over 285 vintage and contemporary microphones, four rebuilt Studer recorders used by the Beatles at Abbey Road, and one of the earliest Moog synthesizers, built by Sear with Moog[2][3]."
