Make Noise 0-CTRL With a 1973 Moog Modular

Published on May 27, 2020 Perfect Circuit

"The Make Noise 0-CTRL is a sequencer and touch keyboard in the same form factor as the 0-Coast. Like the 0-Coast the 0-CTRL has roots in both east and west coast synthesizers as it has features of both the Moog 960 sequencer and the Serge TKB, and also some fun new additions. We had a 1973 Moog Model 12 system with a highpass filter and filter coupler so we decided to use that with the 0-CTRL.

The 0-CTRL is an 8 step sequencer with 3 rows of CV outputs, one row is normalized to a CV output so that you could control the pitch or another parameter of you synthesizer. The second row is normalized to a dynamic gate generator which can output gates of varying voltage levels for more dynamic sequences, there is also a built in envelope generator which we are using here instead of the envelopes in the Moog system. The third row is normalized to the time control of the sequencer clock so that you can create sequences where each step varies in time. The 0-CTRL is not just a sequencer but also a touch keyboard with pressure CV out similar to Pressure Points.

0-Coast Ambient::Fragile:Threaded

C Nich0lls

"This track is composed with Makenoise 0-Coast synth and the 0-CTRL touch sequencer. The principal part is a single-take recording from the 0-Coast. In this piece I was revisiting some ways that I used to use the Korg SQ-1 sequencer. The 0-CTRL allows you to take those ideas further using touch interactions, having 3 rows and a more subtle approach to stage tuning and timing. This recording uses all of these features.

Timing and tuning were dialed in by ear and are deliberately elusive. The main 0-Coast patch uses a 'plucky' setting of it's dynamics, taking advantage of the 0-CTRL's ability to organically modulate the 0-Coast dynamics and contour. it's a relatively simple patch, but all 3 rows of the 0-CTRL are routed to make it expressive.

In addition to the main melodic line there are 3 additional recording takes. 2 are percussive; one a 'kick' and the second a high-pitched/noise burst. The last take is a variant of the melodic line, effectively 'ghosted' by widening the attack of the contour and pitching it up. All of the additional tracks were derived from the same 0-CTRL settings.

All the effects are from the new Strymon NightSky pedal. Each track has it's own custom patch, exploring some of the range of the pedal. All tracks recorded though UA Apollo Twin X."

Analog Memories | 0-Coast + 0-Ctrl + Doepfer A151 sequential switch

Cinematic Laboratory

"Someone was wondering if it would be useful to have two 0-Ctrl units, looking for an excuse to get another one. He was wondering if it would be possible to extend the 8 step sequence to 16. Since I do not have two 0-ctrl's lying around, I used my Brains/PressurePoints combo (the 0-Pressure) to do this experiment. Unfortunately I could not find a way to make one stop and the other one continue. I am not sure it can be done.

However, if you're looking to extend your sequence, getting a 'sequential switch' would be a lot more helpful. The Doepfer A151 can switch between four input signals when it receives a gate, which makes it a perfect companion for your 0-ctrl. I used it to extend the sequence from 8 to 16. Adding the 0-Pressure extended it to 32 and ultimately to 128. But with so many untuned notes, you should make a Krell patch or use a quantizer..."

0-CTRL: Exploration 01

C Nich0lls

"First exploration with the new 0-CTRL from Makenoise. Paired up with the 0-Coast and the combination of the 2 definitely makes for a fun sonic playground.

Using all 3 rows of the 0-CTRL with the pitch row being sent to v/oct input of the 0-Coast, the strength row to the overtone input and the dynamic gate to the gate input of the contour generator.

The interaction of the dynamic gate and contour generator is incredibly nuanced and responsive. There is also some subtle animation of the time row to coax a a little bit of groove out of the timing. Across the recording there is manual manipulation of the balance between triangle wave and the more complex square/waveshaped inputs, as well as some adjustment of contour parameters.

The recording is a single-take recorded through the Strymon TimeLine and BigSky FX. It takes advantage of the NonLinear algorithm of the BigSky which is a gated early reflection reverb. Reminds me of some of the FX you could get out of the venerable Yamaha SPX-90 back in the day, though much less grainy! The video is also a single take so that you can see the played interaction with the 0-CTRL.

Looking forward to exploring this new controller much more."

Dual 0-CTRL Sequencing

video upload by MAKEN0ISE

"Let’s try a little dual 0-CTRL sequencing! Since the 0-CTRL is highly oriented around the possibilities of self-patching, it could be fun to extend some of the self-patching ideas to two 0-CTRLs working together. Self-other patching? Or better yet, friend patching!!

Junkyard Strega | feat. 0-Ctrl + Echophon + Erbe-Verb

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"It's always fun to use Strega in a bigger patch, but this time I am staying close to 'home' with 0-ctrl (without the extra quantizer) and effects from the MakeNoise Echophon delay & Erbe-Verb reverb. Modulating Stega's pitch and internal time can create some great metallic 'junkyard' effects, and 'striking' the Absorb CV with 0-ctrl's dynamic gate output is just amazing. At the end of the video I got inspired, wondering how a stereo conversion would sound with two Echophon's and two Erbe-Verbs. You can also try this with any two effect units/pedals and patch them as left/right FX chains."

Little Drummers | Basimilus Iteritas Alter + 0-Ctrl

Cinematic Laboratory

"Today I wanted to revisit the BIA, zero-controlled by the MakeNoise 0-Ctrl. It's a great module for creating individual high quality percussion sounds. You can also turn it into an Arcade machine when you throw a lot of CV at it (especially with a 0-ctrl center), but that will make it extremely digital. Adding a LPG will do wonders, especially the old ones from Doepfer and MakeNoise because they have that magical vactrol sound. The trick is to mult the trigger to an AD(SR) envelope/LPG and sculpt the BIA with it. A VCFA will also work very well, even a low pass filter.

In the end I added another little drummer, the mighty DFAM. However, I did not use it as a percussion voice but as a Robert #Fripp (Velvet Underground, Bowie, David Sylvian) guitar. Wow, this brings back good memories. DFAM is a complex oscillator with a great filter and sequencer, with probably many millions of different sounds, blips, hits and voices hiding it it."

0-coast ambient: clouded_array (feat. Strega)

video by C Nich0lls

"Optimally experienced during a night-time walk, preferably along an industrial stretch of river or near docks. other locations will yield different, but equally valid results.

First recording with Makenoise's trinity of desktop machines. The Strega joining the 0-Coast and 0-CTRL, adding dimension, grit and presence to the 0-Coast's sound.
The piece is basically a single pass recording with the 0-Coast being heavily processed by Strega. Some additional layers of effects are added via Strymon's NightSky and light processing in Ableton.

A second layer of noises was added using the same sequence from the 0-CTRL just triggering and shaping some of Strega's inherent fizz and rumble.
Amazing how dynamically Strega responds to the 0-Coast input."

Tiny Powerhouse | 0-Coast & 0-Ctrl

Cinematic Laboratory

"0-Coast & 0-Ctrl may be small, but they're huge tiny powerhouses when it comes to driving other gear. Every CV output can be used to modulate, move, push and kick something else so they can easily become the heart and brain of a more complex system, with the Tape & Microsound Music Machine as a clear example. Also I'd like to show that the simple 'one voice' sound of the 0-coast can lead to great new sounds when you 'balance' it with other sources like STO, Telharmonic or your own favorite. And finally, some FX can make a lot of difference. Have fun and happy patching!
MakeNoise's Lewis Dahm did the pixel art on their Office Hours series and I just had to borrow and animate his square 0-coast."
