And the press release:
"Dave Smith Instruments Announces Sequential Prophet X Synthesizer, Featuring Samples-plus-Synthesis Sound Engine

New Instrument Boasts Samples by Acclaimed Sound Developers 8Dio, Stereo Analog Filters, and Full Synthesis Capabilities

San Francisco, CA—May 1, 2018—Dave Smith Instruments today announced the Sequential Prophet X, a new, bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo (16-voice mono) synthesizer that combines samples and synthesis. At the heart of its sound is a newly developed engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters.

Dave Smith commented: “The Prophet X is a powerful evolution of the Prophet series. Musicians have been asking for samples through real analog flters for a long time. We’ve given them not only that, but also all of the synthesis capabilites and awesome sound you’d expect from a Prophet.”

For sample content, Dave Smith turned to acclaimed sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling,” a detailed approach to sampling that aims to capture all of the nuances and idiosyncracies of a particular sound or instrument. 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann put it this way: “We’re known for going anywhere and everywhere with sounds. We embrace all sounds as music and feel that if you can capture the musical soul of a sound, you can make it into an instrument. The Prophet X gives musicians a very immediate and responsive way to access this expressiveness.”

The 150 GB sample library in the Prophet X includes numerous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as an extensive collection of ambient and cinematic effects. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the synthesizer’s many sound-sculpting functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and other tools. The Prophet X also provides 50 gigabytes of internal storage for importing additional samples. Several sample libraries will be available from 8Dio at launch. Support for user-created sample content is planned for December, 2018.

A dual-effects engine provides multiple reverbs, two delays (standard and BBD), a chorus, flanger, phase shifter, rotating speaker, high-pass filter, and distortion. In stacked or split voice mode, you can apply two different effects to each layer. Effects parameters can be modulated through the mod matrix as can the samples themselves. A polyphonic step sequencer allows up to 64 steps and up to 6 notes per step, per layer. The Prophet X features a premium-quality, five-octave, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and channel aftertouch, an integrated power supply, USB support, and three OLED displays.

Dave Smith summed up the new instrument: 'Composers will love the Prophet X for soundtracks and synth geeks will love it for its sound mangling potential. But it’s really for everyone because it covers such a wide range of sounds. The new analog filter design we’re using is not only fantastic for synth sounds, but also does something special for the samples.” Added 8Dio co-founder Tawnia Knox: “The Prophet X has almost infinite posibilites. But more importantly, it has a soul. It’s alive. You can touch your sounds in a different way than you ever could.'

The Sequential Prophet X will be available in the second quarter of 2018 with a projected MAP of $3,999."

Sequential Officially Announces the New Prophet XL

Sequential Prophet XL Introduction Published on Oct 23, 2018 Dave Smith Instruments

"The Sequential Prophet XL is a 76-key version of the acclaimed Prophet X — a potent fusion of samples-plus-synthesis and the most ground-breaking evolution of the Prophet yet: https://www.sequential.com/product/pr..."

And the press release followed by some hi-res pics:

"Sequential Announces Prophet XL Synthesizer, Featuring 76-Note Keyboard and Expanded Polyphony

San Francisco, CA—Oct 23, 2018—Sequential today announced the Prophet XL, a 76-key version of their flagship Prophet X samples-plus-synthesis hybrid synth. The new instrument provides the same powerful combination of high-fidelity samples from 8Dio and full synthesis capabilities that has earned the Prophet X critical acclaim — but makes the concept even more compelling for studio and stage by adding a semi-weighted-action, 76-key, premium-quality Fatar keybed and a new performance mode that allows 32-voice polyphony when using a single sampled instrument and a single oscillator.

At the heart of both the Prophet XL and the Prophet X is a sound engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice-stereo, or 16-voice mono operation.

Dave Smith commented: “We designed the Prophet XL for musicians who wanted more of a good thing. By adding an extended, semi-weighted action keyboard and enabling 32-voice performance mode, we’ve made it even more satisfying to play the acoustic and electric pianos and other instruments where increased polyphony is crucial. We’re making 32-voice mode available on the Prophet X, as well, so that all of our users will benefit.”

Sample content for the Prophet X series was created by sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling.” Regarding the new instrument, 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann said: “For us, it’s all about giving musicians the best tools to express themselves. The Prophet XL is a great enhancement of the original Prophet X concept because it gives artists more room to breathe. More keys and more voices means more room to explore and create.”

The 150 GB sample library in the Prophet XL and Prophet X includes numerous acoustic and electronic instruments as well as an extensive collection of ambient and cinematic effects. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and the synthesizer’s many sound-sculpting functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and other tools. The Prophet XL and Prophet X also provide 50 gigabytes of internal storage for importing additional samples. Support for user-created sample content is planned for December, 2018.

The Prophet XL will be available in November of 2018 with a MAP of $4,399.

8Dio Releases New Prophet T8 Sample Pack for Prophet X

San Francisco, CA—May 14, 2019 — Sound developer 8Dio has released a new “T8” Add-On pack for the Prophet X that features over 3,869 samples, 120 custom instruments, and 32 custom presets. The Add-On pack was created by deep-sampling Dave Smith’s own vintage Prophet T8 synthesizer. The $48 Add-On pack is now available for download from 8Dio’s website.

The Prophet T8 was one of Sequential’s flagship all-analog instruments created in the early 1980s. Its sonic architecture was based on the classic Prophet-5, but with the addition of a full-size weighted keyboard, MIDI integration, velocity and aftertouch sensitivity, a built-in sequencer, and a variety of keyboard modes (Single/Split/Double/Unison). These features made it a milestone in both technology and instrument innovation. In addition to its unique and powerful sound capabilities, one of its main selling points, was its high-quality velocity sensitive keys featuring polyphonic aftertouch.

The “T8” Add-On pack requires Prophet X OS v2.1 or higher.

The Prophet X has garnered critical acclaim for its sonic versatility and sound design capabilities through its substantial internal library of 150 GB of sample content as well as its ability to import up to 50 GB of additional user samples and add-on content from sound developers. Imported sample content can be used to create custom instruments and patches and can be augmented with the Prophet X’s own synthesis engine, which features 2 digital oscillators, stereo analog filters, as well as other sound-shaping controls including multiple envelope generators, LFOs, dual digital effects, and a 64-step polyphonic step sequencer.

For more information about other 8Dio Add-On Packs, including “The Last Prophet” (the last production model of the Prophet-5 ever made), the ARP 2600, and the OBX, visit 8Dio’s website.

“We’re excited to see these new Prophet X add-ons from 8Dio,” commented Dave Smith. They add an interesting vintage slant to a very modern synth. To have these classic instruments available to perform with or to manipulate with the Prophet X synthesis engine makes an already-powerful musical tool even more versatile. ”

Prophet X / XL Sample Import and Mapping App Now Available from 8Dio

8Dio’s Sample Mapping Utility for the Prophet X and XL is now available. See this previous post for a demo. The official press release from Sequential follows:

"San Francisco, CA—Dec 18, 2018—Sequential today announced that the Prophet X, the company’s flagship samples-plus-synthesis instrument, now allows users to import their own samples to create custom instruments and content. Sample import and mapping is done via an easy-to-use software application created by 8Dio, Sequential’s factory sample content provider for the Prophet X. The application is available for download as a free public Beta from 8Dio’s website.

Because the Prophet X was designed to accommodate up to 50 GB of 16-bit, 48 kHz user content, custom sample import has been a highly anticipated feature of the instrument since its introduction in June of this year. The 50 GB of user sample storage, along with the 150 GB of internal factory samples make the Prophet X the most capacious of any hardware instrument supporting sample playback available today.

Sample playback is only part of the Prophet X package, however, as the instrument’s sound engine actually powers two simultaneous sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators, and adds a full complement of traditional synthesis tools, all processed through analog filters. Dual digital effects and a 64-step polyphonic sequencer round out the package. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. 32-voice performance mode, which is a feature of the new 2.0 OS, allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

“Letting users import their own material was an essential part of the Prophet X design from the beginning,” commented Dave Smith. “It makes what’s already our most sonically versatile instrument truly open-ended. We can’t wait to hear where musicians take it now. Things are going to get pretty wild.”

The Prophet X ($3,999 US MAP) and Prophet XL ($4,399 US MAP) are available from Sequential’s worldwide network of dealers.

New Sequential Prophet XL Now Shipping

Announced October 23, the new Sequential Prophet XL is now shipping.

"Sequential Ships Prophet XL 76-Key Samples-Plus-Synthesis Poly Synth

Instrument Features 2.0 OS with Expanded Polyphony, New Loop, Modulation, and Effect Options

San Francisco, CA—Nov 16, 2018—Sequential today announced that the Prophet XL — a 76-key version of their flagship Prophet X samples-plus-synthesis hybrid synth — is now shipping. The instrument debuts a 2.0 version of the OS for both the Prophet XL and Prophet X that adds significant new features including 32-voice performance mode, forward/backward sample looping, new modulation destinations (Hack, Decimate, and instrument playback delay), a new Ring Mod effect, and several other enhancements.

The Prophet XL boasts the same powerful combination of high-fidelity samples from 8Dio and full synthesis capabilities that has earned its 5-octave sibling, the Prophet X, critical acclaim — but makes the concept even more compelling for studio and stage by adding a semi-weighted-action, 76-key, premium-quality Fatar keybed.

At the heart of both the Prophet XL and the Prophet X is a sound engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters. In standard performance mode, the instrument provides bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo, or 16-voice mono operation. 32-voice performance mode, which is a feature of the new 2.0 OS, allows paraphonic filter operation when using a single sampled instrument and oscillator.

Of course 32-voice mode is also enabled on the Prophet X with OS 2.0, so all of our users benefit.”

Sample content for the Prophet X series was created by sound developers 8Dio, known for pioneering “deep sampling.” Regarding the new instrument, 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann said: “For us, it’s all about giving musicians the best tools to express themselves. The Prophet XL is a great enhancement of the original Prophet X concept.

Additional sample expansion packs are available from 8Dio. Support for user-created sample content is scheduled for December, 2018.

The Prophet XL is available now with a MAP of $4,399.

Version 2.0 of the Prophet X/XL OS can be downloaded from the Support page of the Sequential website."

Sequential's Most Powerful Synth - The Prophet XL - Full Feature Rundown

Published on Jun 21, 2019 Andertons Synths, Keys and Tech

"The Prophet XL marks a brand new world for the Sequential Prophet Series. A 76-key, bi-timbral, 8-voice stereo (16-voice mono) synthesizer combining digital oscillators and high fidelity stereo samples, processed through stereo analog filters and the awesome sound and synthesis capabilities we all love and have come to expect on a DSI synth.

At the heart of the Prophet XL is a new sound engine that powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through stereo analog filters.

To start you off DSI have created a 150GB sample library, created with acclaimed sound developers 8Dio. The library includes acoustic and electronic instruments as well as ambient and cinematic effects. In addition the Prophet XL provides you with 50 GB of internal storage space so that you can load your own favourite samples and sample libraries.

In May 2019, sound developer 8Dio released the new T8 add-on pack for Prophet X / Prophet XL. As the name suggests, the samples included are based on the legendary Prophet T8 synthesizer, a flagship all-analog unit that's considered one of Dave Smith's greatest creations. For the new sample pack, 8Dio actually sampled Smith's own vintage Prophet T8 - the real deal!"

Prophet X Receives 2019 TEC Award -- Best New Musical Instrument

First mentioned here, the official press release follows.

Congrats to Sequential! :)

"Prophet X Receives 2019 TEC Award for Best New Musical Instrument

San Francisco, CA—Jan 30, 2019—The NAMM Foundation has awarded the Sequential Prophet X its prestigious Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Award for “Best New Musical Instrument.” The Award was presented at the Foundation’s annual awards ceremony at the National Association of Music Merchants convention in Anaheim, California. The award marks the third TEC award for Sequential and the second TEC award for 8Dio’s Troels Folmann, sample content developer for the instrument.

The TEC Awards are the “Oscars” of the pro audio and sound recording industry and recognize the most outstanding products and technical achievements in the world of music making, live performance, video games, television, and film. Winners represent superior accomplishments in their respective fields and categories.

In addition to the TEC award, the Prophet X has garnered wide critical acclaim from both the music industry press and users alike for its sonic versatility and depth. Its powerful, yet easy to use combination of synthesis-plus-samples technology powers two simultaneous 16-bit, 48kHz sample-based instruments plus two high-resolution digital oscillators with waveshape modulation — all processed through analog filters.

It boasts an internal library of 150 GB of sample content from Academy-award winning sample developers 8Dio, as well as the ability to import up to 50 GB of additional user samples and third-party add-on content. Users can shape the samples through loop manipulation, sample stretching, and a full complement of synthesis functions which include 4 envelope generators, 4 LFOs, and a deep modulation matrix. A dual-effects engine, 64-step polyphonic step sequencer, and arpeggiator add additional performance features.

Sequential founder Dave Smith commented: “We’re proud that the Prophet X has been recognized by both the NAMM Foundation and by the public for what it is — a great-sounding, easy to use creative tool that puts powerful technology in the hands of musicians. That’s always been our philosophy and that’s what we continue to do.” 8Dio co-founder Troels Folmann added: “Receiving a TEC award is always a gratifying experience, but we’re particularly pleased to receive it for our work on the Prophet X because the synth gives musicians a very immediate, expressive, and tactile way to use our deep-sampled instruments.”

The Prophet X ($3,999 US MAP) and Prophet XL ($4,399 US MAP) are available from Sequential’s worldwide network of dealers."
