ALIO DIE | PARALLEL WORLDS

Also posted on MATRIXSYNTH-C. New release via Bakis Sirros. All tracks feature his 16 panel modular Serge system. A previous incarnation of that system is pictured here to the left.

"HIC SUNT LEONES presents:

ALIO DIE | PARALLEL WORLDS Circo Divino (HSL055 and HSL055LP)
CD - 6 side Digipack, 180gr Vinyl.

This is the first collaboration by ambient master Alio Die with soundscape creator Parallel Worlds.
The unique sound achieved could be described as a hybrid sonic world, made out of bouncing electrons and air vibrations.

The modular machines of Parallel Worlds are merged with the acoustic instrumentation and drones of
Alio Die, joined by the ethereal voice of the Polish vocalist/composer India Czajkowska, resulting in a surreal, yet down to earth, listening experience.

The compositions, being, at times, minimal and calm and, at other times, full of mystical darkness and microsound elements, take the listener into a place were mental and physical boundaries have no need to exist.

The beautiful Digipack artwork is by the painter Romanie Sanchez.

Tracks:
1 Lost Fractales
2 Circo Divino
3 Nuvole di Palissandro
4 Sorinel
5 Electrostatic Forest
6 Slide of Grace

All tracks composed and produced by Bakis Sirros and Stefano Musso
(BMI) between 2008 and 2009, in Milan, Italy and Athens, Greece.

Parallel Worlds : Doepfer A100 modular, Serge Modular Music System, AS Integrator modular, Metalbox/CGS modular, modified Oberheim 4-Voice, modified EMS VCS3, String machines, Tape Echoes, Tone & CV generators, wave shapers and modifiers.

Alio Die: Drones and Loops, Zither, Carillon, Effects and Treatments.

Voice and effects on tracks 1,3,4 by India Czajkowska recorded in
Verezzi, Italy.

Mastering by Stefano Musso at Temple Studio, Milan.

"Beatalogue drum loop sample library by Ian Boddy
www.ianboddywaveforms.com"

Details via Bakis:
"Beatalogue

WFBA004

Release date Wednesday 3rd March

Format: Download

RRP £24.99 inc VAT

Beatalogue is the fourth title in Ian Boddy's Waveforms series of sample libraries. As a follow up to Drumalogue this one takes as it's starting material a selection of electronic drum patterns and loops which are then fed through Boddy's massive modular synth system. These are then filtered, mangled and generally messed up using a huge number of modules all in the analogue domain. All the loops have between 3 and 5 variations and sonically range from sweet filtering all the way through to completely crunched and twisted mayhem. The quality of the distortion and overdrive achieved using these techniques gives the loops a gorgeous organic feel which is further heightened by the sound of the modular itself with it's fuzzy warmness and tripping envelopes.

The sounds are also provided in Rex2 and Apple Loops format enabling them to be used at various tempos and dissected by the end user for their own purposes.

Technical Data

300 mono samples at 44.1Khz, 24 bit in WAV format .

All samples also provided in Rex2 & Apple Loops format.

Drum loops sourced from Logic Ultrabeat, NI Reaktor & Kontakt, Sonic Charge Micro Tonic.

New Serge M-odule Released: The 'Dual 'Q' Filter' M-odule

via Bakis

"a new Serge M-odule has been released:

the 'Dual 'Q' Filter' M-odule. Price is 1600 USD

it contains the following modules (from Left to Right):

AC-coupled 3-channel audio mixer, Variable Q VCF, Variable Q VCF, Dual VCA (one vca is AC-coupled the other vca is DC-coupled), and a Mix Processor (DC-coupled).

with that M-odule, you can create various filtering slopes (12db and even 24db, with a patch described in detail here and also, of course, you get various filter responses (BP, LP, HP, Notch). the VCFQ module has a slope of 12db/oct. the filters can be patched to self-oscillate and they have a trigger In socket, for exciting them to produce various percussive sounds. By exciting the resonant filters in 'Lo' mode, you can use them as interesting modulation sources. by combining them in parallel, you can get a twin Q peak also. or, by connecting them in series, you can get a BP filter with variable bandwidth and twin Q peaks also, etc... also you get two vca's for your audio, AM, and inter-patch modulation index needs, plus a mix processor for scaling, mixing and inverting cv's."

Studio Pics via Bakis of Parallel Worlds

www.parallel-worlds-music.com
Much of the gear pictured was used in Shade by Parallel Worlds.

You might remember mention of Shade from this previous post. I finally had a chance to listen to the album in full, and I can highly recommend it. To get a sense of the music of Parallel Worlds, check out these free web releases.

I asked Bakis to send me a few images of his studio and what he used so I could put a post up. He sent the images you see here in.

"The system-100 is new and was not used in the 'shade' album. but it will be used in the future for sure. The serge [second to bottom] is all patched up for one of the scapes in a track that I am preparing for one of my forthcoming collab albums. (that whole patch is only for ONE of the soundscapes of a track.)"

Serge Audio Matrix Mixer

You can find some images of the Control Voltage Mixer here.

Update via Bakis:
"a new Serge M-odule has just been released: the 'Audio Matrix Mixer' M-odule.

it contains (from left to right):
an ac-coupled Matrix Mixer, a Dual VCA (both ac-coupled) and another Dual VCA (also both vca's ac-coupled).

price is 1600 usd.

the audio matrix mixer module includes an extra attenuator in each of its 4 inputs, to control the amount of each sonic element that is applied to ALL 4 output mixes of the matrix.

also, inputs one and two include a phase inverting and muting switch.

so, just imagine the possibilities with this new m-odule...

for example, by mixing 3 audio sources (from NTO's, PCO's, DSG's, etc...) and using the 4th matrix mixer input to create feedback (after processing one mix of these 3 audio sources with another Serge sonic mangler) and also using the 4 ac-coupled vca's to introduce organic AM into your patches (either in the inputs or outputs of various devices), the tonal complexity you could achieve will be limitless...

i can personally recommend this m-odule, as i have the dc-coupled brother of this (the 'CV Matrix Mixer' m-odule) in my system and it is simply great."

New Serge M-odule ASR Quantizer

via Carbon111 on the Serge list

"$1700 usd

The ASR Quantizer is a wonderful mate for your favorite sequential voltage source as well as a good clock for said function blocks.
It contains, from left to right: TGC, NCOM, ASR, ASR and an QUAN.

The ASRs and the QUAN with its scale-changing ability make this a great melodic mutator as well!

Best Regards, James
--
http://www.carbon111.com"

Update: some more detail from Bakis:
"a new Serge M-odule has been released:

the 'ASR Quantizer' (ASR/QUAN) M-odule.

it contains (from left to Right): VC Timegen Clock, Divide by N Comparator, 3 step Analogue Shift Register (x2), 6 vhannels Quantizer.

this is a great module for sequencing aplications, and not only:

it can generate arabesque melodies with its two ASR's that can be chained to form a single 6 channel ASR) usinf 3 VCO's. or you could use the ASR's clocked at audio rate as a weird wave processor....

you can further quantize various sequencer channels with the Quantizer, or quantize the outputs of the ASR's...

with the 'Divide by N Comp' you get a comparator, a clock divider up to /31 (with odd and even clock divisions), an audio wave divider to create subharmonics, a staircase wave generator with N steps, (all these with the N defined manually or via VC) a tool to create sharp clocking pulses, etc...

the Quantizer features six channels of quantizing plus two toggle switches, in addition to its gate input jacks, for selection of intervallic step variants (manualy or via VC).

and of course the 'VC Timegen Clock' that can act as vc lag, vc AD, vc LFO, lowpass VCF, vc-clock source, audio divider, envelope follower, etc...

put all these together for countless more applications.

ASR/QUAN price: 1700 USD."

New Serge M-odule released: the 'Stereo Mixer' M-odule

via Bakis of Parallel Worlds

"a new Serge M-odule has been released: the 'Stereo Mixer' M-odule.

it contains (from left to right):
Quadrature Oscillator module, Dual Transient Generator module, Dual VCA (ac-coupled), Dual Channel Stereo Mixer module (with level and panning voltage controlled).

with this M-odule, the user is presented with a bank of six VCA's (two in the stereo mixer module, two in the Dual VCA, two hardwired in the two outs of the Quad Osc) and two transient generators plus a quadrature sinewave Osc.

so, he has plenty of cv sources to use for modulating volume (or AM synthesis) and for modulating Pan Position, etc...

the Quad Osc goes into well into Audio range, so it can be used as Audio source as well.

Price is 1700 USD."

Parallel Worlds "Shade"

A few new pics from Bakis of Parallel Worlds. Bakis has a new release out named "Shade". You can find more info on the release at DiN, the record label as well as Bakis' news page. You can find ordering details here. Some words on the production from Bakis: "almost no sampled percussion has been used in the whole "Shade" album. most of the percussion / drums and percussive loops have been synthesized in great detail, using the analogue modular walls. takes much time, but the results are worth it!"

BTW, you might also recognize the name Bakis from these posts. Bakis never fails to let us know when new Serge modules are announced. You will also find more images of his impressive studio, links to interviews, his music and more. He is the moderator of the Doepfer A100 list and was extensively involved with sound design for Analogue Systems. I have his CD, "Obsessive Realism" and it is excellent - brooding at times, angelic at others. It is filled with textures against analog percussive rhythms.

Update: album cover added to this post.

DiN32 - Shade by Parallel Worlds

"DiN32 - Shade by Parallel Worlds
Release date 23rd March 2009

Shade is the studio album follow-up to Obsessive Surrealism (DiN26 - 2007) and is the fifth CD release by Parallel Worlds (the main musical project of Greek electronic musician Bakis Sirros).

Parallel Worlds employ a vast arsenal of both vintage and modern analogue modular synthesisers with extensive use of classic sequencing techniques to produce a sonic world that combines modern electronica and ambient music styles with the feel of retro electronic music. His attention to detail is astonishing and his careful sculpting of sounds and textures produce an organic, ever evolving atmosphere full of half glimpsed meanings and subdued emotions. The purely electronic rhythms and beats seem to have a life of their own and showcase a musician who is a virtuoso with these types of instruments that are the antithesis of the quick fix pick-a-preset mind set of much of todays society. Musically he likes to explore various states of mind, no doubt influenced by his medical background and this adds a tension and darkness to his compositions that are punctuated by disarmingly simple and wistful melodies.

With Shade Parallel Worlds show a musical maturity and command of sonic atmospherics that takes the music on a journey, moving through dreams and shades, aiming for the light.

info here: www.DiN.org.uk

this album is full of analogue modular synths, including the Serge modular music system, Analogue Systems RS-Integrator modular, Doepfer A100 modular, Arp 2600, EMS VCS3, Technosaurus Selector system D, Livewire/Plan B/Harvestman modular, Metalbox/CGS modular, Analogue Solutions Concussor modular, Korg MS50, Oberheim 4 Voice modular, etc..."

new (Optional) Serge Knob Colour Scheme for new shop Panels and M-odules

via Bakis:

"hello,

from now on, Serge can offer their shop panels and M-class series M-odules with a more colourful knob scheme.

as Rex says:

"The colour coded knobs are an option for newly ordered M-class m-odules and Shop series panels and are provided to our STS clients at no additional charge.

Retrofits to systems already in the field will be handled by payment &
exchange arrangements between STS clients and myself addressed on per case
basis."

look at the photos section of the SMOG yahoo group (in the m-class series folder) for my CV processor and Wave Processor m-odules that follow this knob colour scheme.

in detail:
Black knobs are for offsets and audio (AC) attenuators, and Blue Knobs are for cv (DC) attenuators.
(the Red knobs are just added to my m-odule for fun, they are not included in the new knob colour scheme.)

thanks,
Bakis."
