Boele Gerkes SCD

A bit of trivia: Boele is one of the first people I met online back in 1996 or shortly after. Realize this was right after Windows 95 came out and the Internet was just beginning to boom. Sonic State, registered in 1995, was the place to hang out (VSE came in 1999). As a side note, my old Matrixsynth.com was registered in 1997. I beat VSE! I also remember Boele from the Waldorf list back then. I liked his music so much I bought a number of his CDs. SCD was the first completely independent music I have purchased online. And believe me, it had to be really, really good for me to take that first step, at that point in time.

25 Years of SCD

I previously put up a post on Boele Gerkes SCD (Something Completely Different). Boele let me know he is considering something very, very cool for his 25 year anniversary of SCD - a double DVD with every recording he ever did along with notes for each track. The notes will include the gear used, the story behind the song and Boele's thoughts on the track. Boele is thinking about creating a pressed version with printed label, booklet, inlay, etc. However, to do that he would need at least 30-40 people willing to pay 20-25 Euro's for the DVD. Something Completely Different - 25

Remember SCD and 25 Years? Well, the DVD is finally out. It will feature 25 years worth of music from Boele Gerkes' Something Completely Different along with exclusive videos. Here's an example of one (note I believe this one was done after the DVD and is not included but Boele ensures me the others are just as good if not better. What's great about the DVD and Boele's track listing is that he lists out the synths used. There's a ton of Waldorf on this so if you are looking for a good showcase of Waldorf synths, this is it.

Congrats Boele! I can't wait for my copy.

The Mapping window is the visualisation of a pool of programs on which 'modules' float. People who do not posses synth-programming skills can use this mapping technology as a starting point to create complex sounds. For example a user can drag a string sound source onto a drum envelope, or a guitar sound onto a string envelope – the concept is simple, yet incredibly powerful.

About WaveMapping
Wavemapping uses visual cues to enable sound design. This may not sound too revolutionary, however it is a completely different way of programming sounds: you do not start with a lot of detailed setting, but with a combined set of parameters which you can select with the touch and swipe of a finger. And the combination of those parameters belonging to a Module make sense of course, it gives the user (being experienced or not) a very fast way for creating unique sounds.
New Analysis/synthesis system:
WaveMapper uses a new the synthesis system, which can be seen as a bridge between wavetables and samples. In wavetable systems you have great flexibility in controlling the sound, but sound material is limited to harmonic, noise-free waveforms. On the other hand there are samplers, which have very high sound quality, but very limited editing features. In WaveMapper there is a new type, which we call “time corrected sample” (TCS). This can reproduce a much wider palette of sounds then classic wavetables, but still allows for a total control of the access via an envelope or LFOs.
