The first half is tweaking around with the inputs from Roland TR606 and Korg Mono/Poly.

In the 2nd half I remove the Korg and then turn the 606 up so that it drives into the soft-clipping on the input.

Introducing a supremely characterful and tactile new Delay Processor based around the infamous PT2399 chip.

This is the culmination of my ongoing works with the wonderful PT Digital Delay chip - yes, the core is digital, but all the surroundings are pure analogue and they've been carefully tweaked to open up a unique variety of sonic fun.

The main features:
- two independent Delay Time settings (65mS to 2.5 Sec) with unique Toggle Time button to switch between them
- Delay Input level control with Punch In button to allow dub-style processing bursts
- Hi/Lo EQ post-delay for extreme sound shaping
- two inputs, versatile output mixing and Send/Return feedback loop
- soft-clipping stages for satisfying overload saturation
- quite an eye catching design!

Lots of demo sounds and a couple of videos now online on the website.

Black Frame - the case is one of the old black ones, so is heavier than the more recent silver ones. There aren't all that many of the old style ones out there.

End-Cheeks - similarly, the cheeks are meant for the regular style frames so you can see there are 5 extra holes on each end + the nuts are attached on the outside.

Several thin-panel (ie. early/test) modules - very few of these are out in the wild. The thin-panel ones -> SYN1 Weevil, DD2 LFO/DCMix, DD1 BalMod/LPG, PRC1 PT Delay, UTL2 Output Mix.

The joystick is completely one-off."

"Ain't she beautiful, my new baby? I just recieved this wonderful machine from Tom Bugs - a Bugbrand Modular. It is obviously capable of some serious sonic mess. And I love the colours!

This patch relies mostly on the delay module, modulated and fed by various oscillators, with extra spice added by the button-trigged envelope to the left, and a few dry feeds to give body to the sound (these are soloed after a while).

"Exploring unexpected drone possibilities from a patch originally made for emergent cross-modulation rhythms, which brutally failed when I tried to film it. After some knob-twiddling, this was the result.

From 4:35 there are some nice grooves.

This is my second day with the Bugbrand Modular, and I'm quite sure it will keep me busy for a while...

The sound is recorded straight from the line out of the synth (which is mono).

BugBrand CTL1 - Touch Panel v2

"Here's an overview of the newly updated CTL1 Touch Panel - one of the most unique and fun parts of the BugBrand Modular system.

The initial idea came from an article published in Synapse Magazine in the 70s, but that is now a distant relative of this module. The 1st version was fun - with two 'Preset' rows, 'Pressure' CV outputs etc - but before production I wanted to update things a bit. The little update turned into a full rebuild!

It is now based on a kind of Sequencing core (uses the 4516 chip - tech geeks) - the Touch & Preset part still behaves the same (though has different circuitry) but this now has the great addition of four step sequencing - play it forwards or backwards, at seq. rates or at audio rates. This thing is versatile and FUN.

"Hello All,

The general bugmail list has been very quiet of late - there has been not much to say as the Weevils have been being made quite regularly and much of my design time is focused on the Modular machines (for which there is a separate mailing list).

BugBrand turned 5 at the start of April - I officially started trading back in April 2005 though there was a certain amount of stuff going on before of course.. Since then we've moved through a whole host of Weevils and I feel that things have really progressed in particular over the last two years as designs & production methods have greatly improved and I've begun to make the Modular range.

From 23rd March 2010 BugBrand has become BugBrand LTD - a UK registered Limited Company - though this won't really have any impact on selling things or day to day running. The big change, however, is that I have had to register for VAT (Value Added Tax) and this will come into effect from the start of May. This currently adds 17.5% to any sales to the UK or EU. Sales outside these areas are NOT taxed! Believe me, I am sorry about this - but there is no way around it.

As such, I've just added a new batch of BoardWeevils to the online store (there are more to follow if these go quickly) and Postcards have been in stock for the last few weeks. Any orders before the end of April will avoid the application of VAT.

This is an early Weevil from 2006 painted in Brown with an insect touchplate (which was a standard design for the Weevil06) in good condition other than a few little scratches here and there (see pictures). The main difference from regular production ones is that there is a switch on the underside to switch the internal mini-amp-speaker on and off -> in the production versions I changed it so that inserting a jack plug would automatically disconnect the internal speaker.

BugBrand Turns 8 & Beam Night @ Cafe OTO

"The start of April marks the BugBrand Anniversary - we now enter the 8th year of Bug.

As such, it is often a good point to take stock and I thought I'd give some updates as BugNews this year has so far been sporadic.

Firstly - this Wednesday I am heading to London to play at Cafe OTO: I will be doing a 'regular' Modular performance and also premiering a new demo/ installation approach where I give quick & personal 10-minute performances via headphones.

This drives the stereo audio straight into your ear-holes, while also offering you a close-up view of what is being patched & tweaked. It should be fun and a bit different..

So, on to the news discussions.
BoardWeevils continue to be the only regular production for now: http://www.bugbrand.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=110

Since the end of last year I've been making noises about i) getting the PT Delay back in to regular production & ii) making further standalone devices.

I thought I'd just make a few small changes to the PT Delay design, but life is never that simple! There are always several ways to skin a cat (metaphorically, naturally) and I guess I've been over-investigating the different possibilities.. I think I'm now on to redesign prototype number four and I'm still not quite done! Yes, there are changes afoot, but I'm not going to reveal much more until the point of production is actually reached. In essence, despite a general lack of public progress, this is one of my most pressing projects at present and I've been learning plenty along the way.
Fingers crossed for a release before the end of May, but no promises for now.

The continued investigations of other standalones (and, actually, modular developments too) move in quite similar ways to the PT Delay - forwards, backwards and plenty of sideways maneuvers! In many ways I've been taking something of a pause & breather the last few months to allow myself to refocus on design approaches and consider how best to take BugBrand forwards.
