Patch Base for iPad Adds Editors for 4 Vintage Roland Synths

iTunes: Patch Base - Coffeeshopped LLC

Roland synths: JV-2080, JV-1080, XP-80, XP-60

"Patch Base 2.6 is available today, bringing editors for 4 Roland synths: JV-2080, JV-1080, XP-80, and XP-60. These synths were incredibly popular in the 90's, and have a lot of sounds that you'll recognize, just scrolling through the presets. According to Wikipedia, "The JV-1080 has been used on more recordings than any other module in history." And according to Legowelt, "If you program [the JV-2080], you can get some really freaky sounds out of it." Now with Patch Base, you can take these old machines to new (freaky) places.

Support for each synth is divided into two editors. The "Patch" editor is the standard synth voice editor, giving access to all voice parameters as well as copy/paste for envelopes and "Tones" (more on this below). The "Rhythm" editor is the drum kit editor, where you can create a kit with 64 different sounds in it, and shape each sound with pitch, filter, and amp envelopes.

Full support for each synth is available as an In-App Purchase, and the purchase of support for a synth unlocks both the Patch and Rhythm editors. For the next few days, these new editors are all 50% off. So check them out!"

Patch Base Adds Roland Alpha Juno-1, Alpha Juno-2, and MKS-50 Editors

via Coffeeshopped

"Simple and classic" is how I would describe the Roland Alpha Junos. Like the Korg DW-8000, they don't have too many moving parts: your standard subtractive synth setup, and with only a single envelope and a single LFO. Not a lot of modulation capabilities. But the sound of the oscillators and the resonant low-pass filter give you a classic Roland sound, and the minimal parameters let you quickly explore a lot of different sonic spaces. You can get round and punchy basses, hollow leads, and soft pads all with ease. And everything sounds sweeter with the Chorus turned on; it's a Juno.

The MKS-50 (photographed above by Lauren Slusher) is the same inside as the Alpha Junos, but with a little more in terms of performance setups, utilizing the weird "Patch" structure that Roland also used in the D-110, which is like a precursor to the idea of "Performances". But that aside, you've got the same sound capabilities as the Alpha Juno keyboards.

Patch Base gives you quick and easy control over all of the sound parameters inside these synths; no menu-diving or wheel-jogging required.

Thanks again to Stefan George for lending me his Roland MKS-50 for development work, and Cody Johnson for his Roland HS-10 (an Alpha Juno-1 in different clothing)."

Roland JV-880 and JV-80 Editors Added to Patch Base

via Coffeeshopped

"Patch Base 3.2 adds 2 new editor/librarians for the Roland JV-880 and JV-80. These synths were the beginning of the family tree that led to the JV-1080 and eventually the powerful XV-5080 (which I'm working on support for!). Don Solaris has a great article and diagrams of the evolution of Roland's sample-based synths.

These new editors give you quick access to the 4 Tone layers of each voice, plus the Chorus and Reverb sections, with copy/paste and randomize features as usual. The Rhythm editor allows the construction of 61-part drum kits, each with their own Pitch and Filter envelopes. And in the Performance section, you can set up your 7-part voice performance, plus a Rhythm section. And of course, each of the banks (Voice, Rhythm, and Performance) can be backed up, swapped out, and rearranged in the app, as well.

Thanks to Paolo Di Nicolantonio for the beautiful JV-880 picture. And here are some screenshots of the new editors."

Yamaha DX7 FM Synthesizer SN 101098

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

I have a new found appreciation for the DX7 and FM synthesis. I finally got around to exploring my DX-200 again and it offers so much more than your bread and butter sounds. The timbres evolve in a way that actually remind me of the Buchla music easel. I now understand why Barry Shrader explored FM synthesis after the Buchla.

BTW, if you have a DX7 based 6-Op FM synth, I highly recommend the DX7 editor in Patch Base by Coffeeshopped LLC. Be sure to click the little algorithm icon on the bottom left of the editor. It will arrange the operators on screen according to the selected algorithm. You can also double tap any oscillator to bring up a larger screen to edit. If you own an iPad it's a must have editor imo.

Dave Smith Instruments Tetra Editor and Librarian for Patch Base

via Coffeeshopped

"The latest releases of Patch Base include an editor for a desktop analog powerhouse: the DSI Tetra. It can be a 4-voice polysynth, or an 8-oscillator monosynth, and a lot of other things in between. With all of that flexibility and not a lot of knobs, a good editor is crucial."

Bank Editors
Edit and organize all of the Tetra's 512 stored Voices and 128 stored Combos. Patch Base gives you direct access to all banks, so you can organize them and back them up to files on your device.

Roland JD-800 Editor for Patch Base Released

via Coffeeshopped

"Patch Base has the best Roland JD-990 editor and librarian available for Mac and iPad. Edit any parameter, organize patches, create random patches, and more.

The Roland JD-990 is a powerful multi-timbral synthesizer module capable of playing 7 voice parts and 1 drum kit at once. Patch Base gives you easy editing of every voice and drum parameter inside the JD-990, enabling you to harness everything this little box can do.

Voice Editor
Each Voice in the JD is comprised of 4 Tone layers, each with its own sample, pitch, filter, and amp envelopes, and LFOs. Additionally there are 7 effects units including chorus, delay, and reverb. Patch Base lets you control all of it:

Quickly browse all the internal samples in the JD-990
Easily browse and use the additional sounds on any PCM card you have installed
View either an entire Tone at once, or "palette" mode letting you see all settings of a particular section (Pitch, Filter, Amp, etc) across all 4 tones
Copy and paste envelopes for easy editing
Copy and paste entire Tones to mix and match layers, or thicken up your sounds
Use any of the effects in the JD, and fine-tune their parameters
Get a bird's-eye view of the dozens of parameters that make up an JD voice patch
Rhythm Editor
Design your own custom drum kits with Patch Base's Rhythm Editor for the JD-990. Only dedicated menu divers would want to do this without an editor, but with Patch Base, it's simple. You can design 61 separate drum sounds per setup:

Each drum sound uses its own sample, with tuning and pitch envelope
Access the multi-mode filter for every sound, with its own envelope
Copy/paste entire drum sounds to create multiple variations per kit
Copy/paste envelopes for easy editing
Performance Editor
The Performance is where all the parts of the JD-990 come together. With Patch Base you can easily edit all 8 Parts:

Make high-level sound adjustments to the level and panning
Set your MIDI Channels and configure outputs for every part
Edit the Performance effects
Bank Editors
Edit and organize the 64 voice patches and 16 performances stored in your JD's memory. Patch Base gives you direct access to the banks, so you can organize patches and back them up to files on your device."

New Dtronics DT-01 Controller for the Roland Boutique D-05, D-50, & D-550

A knob box for your Roland D-05, D-50, & D-550. On a personal note, I recently picked up a D-05 and was thinking about selling it due to the deep menu diving. That and there is no central editing per patch. The D-05 and D-50 are kind of like four synths in one - two "Partials" with an "Upper" and "Lower" voice each for a total of four sources that you edit independently. There is no central filter, no central envelopes, etc., so you are stuck menu diving to edit each part. Think of it like each oscillator having it's own full set of synth parameters - powerful, but a true pain to edit.  Yes you can get the hang of it, but there is no way to avoid the number of additional steps it takes to get to parameters.  This controller appears to solve that problem. It comes in at 299 euro which currently equates to about 339 USD. For those on a budget, Coffeeshopped makes an editor for Patch Base on the iPad.

Details via Dtronics:

"Dtronics DT-01 for Roland Boutique D-05/D-50/D-550

The Dtronics DT-01 is a hardware controller for the Roland Boutique D-05 and D-50 / D-550.

Features:
Dtronics DT-01 for Roland Boutique D-05 and D-50/D-550
The Dtronics DT-01 is a hardware controller for the Roland Boutique D-05 and D-50/D-550.
The DT-01 has almost the same dimensions as the Roland D-05.
The Dtronics DT-01 can also be operated according to the manufacturer on a vintage Roland D-50 / D-550
Almost every parameter of the Roland D-05 gets its own poti 12 keys and 56 pots are in a nice and solid desktop case.
Some pots are doubly assigned, but can be switched quickly and are very easy to read.
he potentiometers are also designed with color on the standard models to make it easier to read the regulator positions.

The selling price is expected around 299,- Euro.
The DT-01 will be available in August 2018."

Roland JP-8080 Editor and Librarian for Patch Base

via Coffeeshopped where you can find the editor.

The JP-8080 editor in Patch Base brings all the settings for a full JP-8080 Performance with its 2 Patches into a single editor. You can quickly see the overview of the settings for the Upper and Lower Patches as well as the Velocity and Control Morphing settings for every parameter.

The Upper and Lower tabs each show you a full patch on a single screen. Although the JP-8080 is wonderful for hands-on control, when you load a saved patch you don't really know what any of the settings are on the synth itself. Patch Base makes this easy. You can also copy and paste the Filter and Amp envelopes as well as Randomize or Initialize each individual patch. Individual patches can be saved and loaded, as well as entire Performances, all from one editor.

The Voice Mod tab shows you all of the Voice Mod settings in one place, making it easy to create your own custom patches without any menu diving.

The 2-Up tab shows the most important controls of the Upper and Lower patches side-by-side, for when you're creating Performances that use both patches on the same channel, and you want to compare settings between patches, or quickly copy/paste between patches.

Roland JD-Xi editor for Patch Base on iPad

via Coffeeshopped

"The latest update to Patch Base adds a fully-featured program/patch editor for the Roland JD-Xi, bringing the number of supported synths in Patch Base to 30! This new editor is the most complex yet in the Patch Base collection, including support for the JD-Xi's 2 digital synths, analog monosynth, sample-based drum machine, and on-board effects and mixing.

The hundreds of parameters that the JD-Xi uses are all here, allowing for a sound design experience far beyond what's available using the JD-Xi's built-in controls (unless you enjoy hours of menu diving!). All of this control is achieved via a 5-page layout for the editor. In addition to the individual controls, many aspects of your patches can be copied, pasted, and randomized. And as always, Patch Base allows you to store and organize these sounds on your iPad for later use, backup, and sharing."

Coffeeshopped Releases Patch Blocks iPad Editor for the Yamaha DX200

Patch Block on iTunes

The great thing about this editor, aside from having all the editable parameters in front of you, is the graphical representation of things like the algorithms and envelopes. You can see the operator routing of each algorithm and you can see what you are editing on the envelopes which are a bit reverse of what you would expect on your standard analog synth - increasing the rate lowers the attack time, while increasing lengthens it.

via Coffeeshopped:

"About a year ago, the venerable Elektron released their Digitone: an FM synth box with a sequencer, promising to make the elusive methods of frequency modulation into a more hands-on experience. Well, 17 years earlier, Yamaha tried a similar thing: the DX200. And about a month ago, a kind and generous man named Calvin met with me on a chilly night in the parking lot of a Walgreen's Pharmacy in Austin to loan me his DX200 (pictured here). And so, today, I bring you Patch Base 3.4 and the Yamaha DX200 Editor and Librarian. Let me tell you a bit about the new editor, and the DX200 itself.

via Coffeeshopped

"Patch Base has the best Waldorf Micro Q editor and librarian available for Mac and iPad. Edit any parameter, organize patches, create random patches, and more.

Voice Editor
Edit any of the Micro Q's voice parameters in real-time. All of the oscillators, filters, envelopes, and LFOs are there on one screen for fast editing. Envelopes can be copied, pasted, initialized, and randomized.

All the modulation routings and modifiers are shown on one page, with envelopes and LFOs for a single place to create all the custom modulations you desire.

Both Effects units are fully supported with all of their different parameters available for easy configuration. Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Overdrive, Five FX, Vocoder, Delay, Reverb, 5.1 Delay and 5.1 Clocked Delay are all easy to play with.

Visualize the entire Arpeggiator and User pattern on one page to create custom arp sequences for your sounds.

Multi Editor
The Micro Q can play up to 16 different parts at the same time, and now it's easy to manage all of them with Patch Base's Multi Editor. Quickly change the sounds used, mixing levels, panning, MIDI channels and more.

Also, you can directly edit all 16 sounds loaded in Multi Mode. Patch Base has 16 separate voice editors, 1 for each part, allowing you to easily switch between parts when you need to make small tweaks (or big changes!) to any of the sounds in a Multi.

Drum Map Editor
Similar to the Multi editor, the Drum Map editor enables customization of Drum sets of 32 different sounds from your Micro Q. Select the sounds you want to use, and mix and transpose them. The editor includes a 32-button grid at the top to audition any of your sounds while you're creating your kit. And the custom Effects and Arp settings for your Drum Maps are also directly editable here.

Bank Editor
The Micro Q has 3 internal voice banks, for a total of 300 sounds that can be stored on the synth. Patch Base's Bank Editor enables you to add new sounds, rearrange the locations of sounds, and backup and load banks of 100 sounds at a time. The Micro Q's 100 Multis and 32 Drum Maps can also be managed directly in Patch Base.

Patch Librarian
Save your patches and banks as files on your iPad or Mac: Patch Base saves files as sysex that can be sent to your synth by Patch Base or any general-purpose sysex transfer app.

Organize your sounds: Create folders to organize your patches and banks.

iCloud integration: Optionally use iCloud to make your patch files accessible on any iCloud-connected device, and to automatically sync files between Patch Base on Mac and iPad.

Import sysex files: Import existing patch and bank sysex files to Patch Base. On Mac, simply drop your files into the Patch Base browser. On iPad, easily import using iCloud or the Files app.
