Tricks for the Dreadbox Nyx - Synched Oscillators

Published on Mar 17, 2018 ProckGnosis

Playlist:

1. Tricks for the Dreadbox Nyx - Pulse-Width Modulation
"Yeah, it's not so much a trick, as it is a mini-tutorial on how to patch Mod 2 to modulate the pulse-width on oscillator 1. Skip to 03:00 to jump the explanation.

The Dreadbox Nyx can be a bit intimidating and take a little time to figure things out, so I thought I'd throw this out to assist folks with a starting point at least. I would suggest going back to my previous "Dreadbox Nyx Routing Examples" video as well to help get a better understanding of the synth layout as a whole.

The Nyx is still probably my favorite "less-than-a-$1000" mono synth right now (with the Korg ARP Odyssey being a close second). I know I'm a broken record on this, but it bears repeating. This is a uniquely designed and unique sounding synth in the field of "a lot of the same" analog monosynths, and fun as hell to play with once you get your head around it a bit."

2. Tricks for the Dreadbox Nyx - Synched Oscillators
"And here's Nyx "Trick #2" or a mini-tutorial on how to synchronize Osc 2 to Osc 1 and use Mod 2 to enhance the effect. Jump to 01:30 to skip the intro.

For a much more thorough explanation on how synchronizing oscillators works, check out:
"Murmux Semi-Modular - Tidbits and Tips for Creating a Good Synched Oscillator Patch" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH-bD...)

Though I love a good synched oscillator patch, I would have to say this sounds best towards the end of the video, where I've mixed in the remaining saw wave (Osc 1), and used Mod 1 as a little AD envelope to modulate the filter.

Another point not mentioned in the video is I could have used the Modulator II "LVL" setting to also alter the amount of the Mod 2. It is actually additive to the amount of the "M2" value set by the "Depth" trim knob.

Lastly, this is only an example/tutorial of the most common way to get a standard, synched-oscillator sound (IMO). The Nyx being semi-modular gives you LOTS of other options and ways to produce and screw around with the synched sounds. The Nyx routings could be set to let Mod 2 modulate the HP or LP filter while it's also modulating the Osc 2 pitch."

3. Tricks for the Dreadbox Nyx - Making an ADSR Envelope
"And here's Nyx 'Trick #3' or "some info how to create an ADSR or 4 or 5 stage envelope using MOD 1 and MOD 2." If you like math, but are newer to synths, I would watch "Part 2" at 07:07 first and THEN go back to Part 1 at 02:14.

Part 1 - The Examples (02:14)
Part 2 - The ADSR Academics (07:07)

This is likely my last "Tricks for the Nyx" video for a while. The video is split into 2 parts: part 1 gives a worked through example of setting up a 4 or 5 stage envelope, and part 2 gets a bit more basic (the academic part), explaining how envelopes are usually shaped and how different envelopes can be shaped on the Nyx by adding the smaller MOD 1 and MOD 2 envelopes together.

I'm probably turning off some newbs by showing how the Nyx is a bit more complicated than most normal synths, but for me, that's a large part of what makes it cool. If you're a newb and you bought a Nyx, be patient...it is WORTH the investment of time to learn. Cheers!"

Dreadbox Nymphes Review - Affordable 6 Voice Analogue Poly Synth

video upload by

https://www.signalsounds.com/dreadbox-nymphes-polyphonic-desktop-analogue-synth

"I've owned or used a lot of Dreadbox synthesizers, from the early incarnations of the Erebus when I spotted it in a modular synth shop and it blew my mind. I blame both Dreadbox and Jason from Signal Sounds for bankrupting me since then with my slide into Eurorack.

Anyway, I wasn't convinced about the Nymphes when I first saw it advertised, as the menu control seemed a bit confusing and the synth lacking some features. However, when I saw the price was 'just' £449, I decided to take the plunge, and I am glad I did.

Here's my take on the Dreadbox Nymphes. What its features are, its strengths, whether or not that menu system actually is a problem or not... and my general experience using it so far. All of it is entwined with some wee bits and pieces of sounds direct from the synth itself. Don't take my slagging of Americans too seriously... it's what you all deserve for regularly abusing me for my accent. :*

Ambient jam with the Dreadbox Nymphes, Tasty Chips GR-1, Strymon NightSky, and Empress Reverb

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live, semi-improvised track performed entirely on hardware.

Dreadbox was kind enough to send along the Nymphes a little early to me, and I couldn't have been more excited. While I have the Abyss, I've been hoping for a new Dreadbox polysynth that's more widely available for a long time.

And the Nymphes doesn't disappoint. It's unbelievably small but with a super sturdy build and great fader throw lengths. It has a lot of secondary functions but it's dead easy to navigate, and still feels more hands-on than the Dreadbox Typhon (another great small synth). And most importantly of all, it has a beautiful sound with tons of character and some great particular nooks and crannies in its timbres. A warm analog polysynth the size of a paperback book? I love it.

I've also got lots to say on the Tasty Chips GR-1, but I'm planning to do a video with it in the near future, so more then. Suffice it to say for now that I love it and that it's a perfect companion for ambient work.

Dreadbox Nymphes through Strymon NightSky — Main synth
Tasty Chips GR-1 through Empress Reverb — Ambient granular goodness
Arturia Keystep — MIDI controller for the Nymphes

Performed and recorded live, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master."

#01 modular playing with | make noise pressure points & 2hp switch

Published on Oct 27, 2017 Elinch

"from the first setup with the make noise pressure points and the 2hp switch as the only sequencer.

first pp & brains sequenced mutable instruments rings (into mutable instruments clouds) and synthesis technology e 330 in morph mode (dreadbox gamma, dreadbox delta). the trigger comes from dreadbox theta. the pp works as a 12 step sequencer, the 2hp switch switches between the 4step sequences (cv controlled by an intellijel quadra envelope). the first pressure output controls rings brightness, the second rings structure, the third clouds freeze and the fourth clouds blend parameter.

second pp controls dreadbox omikron (vcl vcf 74, intellijel uvca, intellijel quadra).
the first pressure output triggers dreadbox gamma (intellijel uvca / 4ms dld).

Exploring the Moog Subharmonicon with the Dreadbox Darkness and Dreadbox Lethargy

video upload by Patchwerks

"In this video Karl from Patchwerks shares a short exploration on one of his favorite synthesizers, the Moog Subharmonicon (with Dreadbox friends.)

Order the Moog Subharmonicon here: https://bit.ly/moog_subharmonicon
Order the Dreadbox Lethargy here: https://bit.ly/dreadbox_lethargy
Order the Dreadbox Darkness here: https://bit.ly/3tTbrO7

Subharmonicon is a semi-modular polyrhythmic analog synthesizer that employs a 6-tone sound engine and multi-layered sequencers to explore the world of subharmonics, polyrhythms, and the unique relationships they create.

Subharmonicon’s characteristic sound starts with two analog VCOs and four Subharmonic Oscillators for a total of six powerful sound sources. Each subharmonic tone is mathematically derived from one of the two main VCOs, giving the resulting chord shapes a beautifully coherent quality. Onboard quantization lets you dial in perfect intervals every time with selections for multiple tuning systems. Choose from contemporary Equal Temperament settings, the heavenly intervals of Just Intonation, or the unlimited freedom of no quantization at all.

Animating Subharmonicon’s distinctive chord shapes is done through a polyrhythmic pair of 4-Step Sequencers. Each sequencer is clocked by any or all of four Rhythm Generators that output mathematical divisions of the master tempo. Layer multiple Rhythm Generators on top of each other to create complex polyrhythms and discover inspiring new patterns and styles. Delve into Subharmonicon’s dual Envelope Generators, Moog Ladder Filter, and analog VCA to call up dynamic articulations ranging from lush pads and blurred edges to percussive plosives and ritualistic rhythms.

Although no patching is required to start creating, exploring Subharmonicon’s modular patchbay unlocks worlds of possibilities as you make novel connections and plug into new ideas. The 32-point 3.5mm patchbay can be patched into itself, expanding Subharmonicon’s onboard capabilities, or interfaced with Mother-32, DFAM, and other external Eurorack-compatible gear (MIDI Type A adapter included for DIN to 3.5mm MIDI input). Use as a standalone synth with included +12V DC power supply or simply remove the front panel to install into any Eurorack system.

Custom Presets for Dreadbox Typhon: Melodic Profusion (64 Presets & Seqs). Demo/No Talking

video by Anton Anru

"Melodic Profusion is a collection of 64 Presets and Sequences for Dreadbox Typhon. It includes: 22 Leads, 19 Plucks, 12 Chords, 3 Pads, 5 Drones, 3 Percs.

The soundset covers a wide range of genres and styles: Techno, House, Funk, Electro, Breaks, D'n'b, Pop, Lounge, Downtempo, Trance, Psy, Vintage/Retro Electronica, and many others.

🎷 Dreadbox Typhon - Melodic Profusion (64 Presets + Sequences)
🎸 Dreadbox Typhon - Rhythm In Bass (64 Presets + Sequences)
Get the Soundsets: https://antonanru.sellfy.store/dreadbox/

Each preset has a sequence. You may use it as it is, change it, or send notes from DAW or any other external sequencer.

But I strongly recommend using the internal sequencer, as I thoroughly set modulations that are synced to the playback. These modulations make the presets and the sequences sound really expressive, dynamic, evolving without touching any parameters.

However, if you tweak Modwheel, Pitchbend (that are set in every preset), and front panel parameters, you will raise a timbre's expression to the new level.

Intro to "Spiral" Draft (Vangelis Cover) - Roland System-500, Audiothingies Doctor A, OB-6, Lyra-8

video by thesrabbit

"This started off as an exercise on how to do auto-panning within a Eurorack system, without having any mixer modules with pan controls or CV panning inputs. I thought about what sort of musical piece would be a good way to test out my explorations, and the answer is "Spiral" by Vangelis, of course! The intro is probably my favorite synth piece of all time. The breakdown of the patch used here for the main sequence is as follows, from left to right:

Roland System-500 512 Dual VCO:
One oscillator sawtooth and pulse wave out, range set to 16' (should have done 32'). PWM is applied via an LFO.

Roland System-500 521 Dual VCF:
Oscillator sawtooth and pulse coming into the filter's mixer, level of the pulse wave is 100%, and the level of the sawtooth is about 50%
Cutoff set low to start with, resonance about half-way up. The cutoff inputs are fed from the outputs of an envelope generator and an LFO. Playing with the levels of these inputs in real time along with the resonance knob is critical to capturing the vibe of the original sequence and delivers that pulsating sound.

Roland System-500 505 Dual VCF:
Output of the 521 is going to the input of the first filter in the 505. I'm only using this module for its built-in VCA. The cutoff is open all the way. This does add some extra brightness to the sound, but my other VCA's are all used up in this patch. Once the signal runs through the 505's VCA output, it is effectively a complete single synth voice, ready to be recorded or routed to a mixer, etc.

Buffered Multiple:
The first mult input is the output of an envelope generator from the Dreadbox Ataxia. One of the mult's outputs is routed to one of the 521's cutoff inputs and another one of the mult's outputs is routed to the 505's VCA level input. The second mult input is the output of the 505's VCA. Two outputs of the second mult are routed to the inputs of each VCA in a Doepfer Dual VCA module on the far right. Using a buffered mult means that the outputs have exact copies of the input signal. Having 2 identical copies of the single synth voice is critical to the auto-panning process.

Dreadbox Utopia:
The triangle LFO of the Utopia is routed to both the pulse width input of the 512 oscillator and to one of the cutoff inputs on the 521 VCF. The rate of this LFO is pretty slow. This slow modulation of the pulse width and filter is another critical component to recreating the vibe of the original sound.

Dreadbox Ataxia:
Mod 1 is setup as a standard ADSR envelope. Its output is split and sent to one of the 521's cutoff inputs and the 505's VCA level input. This is already mentioned above in the "Buffered Multiple" section. Attack is 0, the decay is set to around 40% and sustain and release are probably no more than 10%. This envelope is triggered by the gate of incoming notes from the sequencer.
Mod 2 is setup as a fairly slow LFO, with a wave shape that's somewhere between a triangle and a sawtooth. Its output is split into 2 with a passive mult and routed to the "rise" and "fall" inputs of the Make Noise Function module.

Make Noise Function:
This is setup to basically function as a slow triangle-ish LFO with a positive and negative output. The positive output is routed to the CV input of VCA 1 of the Doepfer Dual VCA module, and the negative output is routed to the CV input of VCA 2. Cycle mode is enabled and the "rise" and "fall" parameters are continuously manipulated in real-time via the output of an LFO from the Dreadbox Ataxia. The net effect of this is that audio doesn't simply sweep from left to right at a steady even pace. The panning speed changes in accordance with the signal coming from the Dreadbox Ataxia's LFO. This variable panning speed in conjunction with external stereo delay creates a nice swirling spacey effect.

Doepfer Dual VCA:
Each VCA's input is an exact copy of the output of the 505's VCA (the complete synth voice). The CV input levels on each VCA are maxed out and the gain control is maxed on the second VCA. The positive output of the Make Noise Function is routed to VCA 1's CV input and the negative output is routed to VCA 2's CV input. As the positive output of the Make Noise Function increases (moves up and away from zero), what this does is effectively pull the level of VCA 2's output down (by applying negative voltage) while simultaneously pushing the level of VCA 1's output up. As the positive and negative output from the Make Noise Function approaches 0, the level of VCA 1 drops and the level of VCA 2 increases (as the pullback applied to the maxed out gain level of VCA 2 diminishes). This is the final piece of the auto-panning puzzle. The output of VCA 1 is then connected to an input on a desktop mixer that's panned hard left and the output of VCA 2 is connected to an input on the same mixer that's panned hard right."
